Frozen Friends Update: Trudeau Steps Down

Justin Trudeau resigned today has stepped down as leader of the Liberal party and as PM.  Up next: a national vote for leader of the Liberals and then likely a vote of no-confidence in parliament to set off a new round of national elections.

It’s wild that he’s been in office since 2015, almost a decade.  There’s a lot going on up north but one thing that’s been an issue is broad dissatisfaction with what has been some extremely loose immigration policies. Almost 23 percent of Canada is foreign born with huge proportions coming from South Asia and that is a recipe for social instability no matter how well managed.

I hope this thread doesn’t go CR.  We’ll see.

Seems to me like in countries w/o term limits, the popular leaders wear out their welcome. Thatcher, Bibi, Trudeau.

As flawed as our American system is, the Presidential term limit is about right, imho.

ETA

If I were to change it, I’d go to one single 6 year term.  Seems incumbents lose steam in their last 2 years.  And a 1 term President who knows he/she has nothing to run for, nothing to lose, might be braver?  Maybe?

Yep. Have a good Canadian friend who lives here. He just went back and was amazed by how much animosity there is towards immigrants in his blue collar town.

They've mismanaged affordable housing worse than us. Throw in the fact they don't have 30-year fixed mortgages, and you've got a recipe for unattainable houses for the masses. Their dissatisfaction goes beyond the non white boogeyman l.

Their population growth is at close to 3 percent a year, compared to the U.S. at about .5.  Which does not help with housing at all. Builders can’t keep up.

It always does, but it's easier to rile up the braindead masses by blaming some browns.

Trudeau was always an empty suit with empty-headed ideas (or really just no ideas of his own at all).  The amazing part is that he's lasted this long, which is more an indictment of the conservative party in Canada and perhaps the average Canadian voter's love for shiny, polite things than anything else.

I'll never forget one of his early press conferences after taking office when a planted reporter fed a planned question about machine learning to an expert at the mic, and Justin stepped in with an "I'll handle this" and went on a long, and clearly memorized, detailed explanation of the intricacies of the tech.  The press, naturally, gushed and goo-gooed over how brilliant he was when it was painfully apparent to anyone with a functioning brain that he had no clue what he was talking about.   In short, he has always been style over substance, has gotten by on charm and saying the right things that make most Canadian voters feel warm and fuzzy, all while adding zero value to the country, and has now overseen the worst Canadian economy in most living people's memories along with the immigration issues already discussed above. He's overseen serious cultural instability and economic misery, and now there are loads of angry voters who would ultimately prefer a left-leaning moderate but will likely vote far right in the next election just to send a message to the liberal party (sounds a bit like another country we all know well).

As noted above, the immigration issues are no doubt part of the dissatisfaction with Trudeau, but as is most often the case, the economy is the real issue.  He has been a big spender and doesn't see a far-left pet cause he doesn't like to throw money at.  His ousting stepping down has much more to do with taxpayers' dissatisfaction with government spending when they're struggling personally than it does with immigration.  When you factor in how much the government, particularly in the Eastern half of the country, handled the pandemic and the economic fallout that came from it, people are fed up and broke.  If the Liberal party doesn't find leadership who can tone down the nonsense they're going to get roasted in the next election, and that's not something that should really have happened at all except they have continued to double down on bad ideas for years.

really enjoyed the first reply: hope it doesn’t go CR, then proceeds to post CR shit

True brain rot to expect this in a thread about a politician. Your base premise and assumptions about the DT are weirdly flawed, as people have been telling you for years.

What fascinates me here is the potential gamesmanship going on and the cabinet members having to play "hot potato" and who does or doesn't want to be the new Prime Minister that is looking straight into a historic level defeat for their party.

I am not going to get heavily into Canadian politics (an unfortunately it has been something I have now had to make myself more familiar with now up here in the North vs being in Texas) but this is something akin to what we saw with the political maneuvering for the VP spot in the US election. What will be important to watch is how does the Quebec block get behind and does that support fracture across the rest of the MPs or do they pick someone that is a placeholder and a fallguy.

I have to say there is something to be said for the head of government to be chosen by the legislature. No playing the blame game. If a party has a majority they have a legitimate mandate and if it takes a coalition to elect a PM the parties have to work together. If you suck, you all get thrown out and try again

I find your post long on opinion, short on facts.

What did I miss?

It's this post in IPIHB, but the original content was just edited out with no mod comment or any other indication that the post was edited, though my post quoting it still has the original text.

Apparently the fact that I reported the original content which was tantamount to "this girl looks underage isn't that hot" is enough for someone to take a jab at me for being "offended by everything".
