They’ve been spraying the brine solution down on the highways, but it doesn’t work very well.

That's because it is supposed to be used for turkeys, not streets.  Same thing for that beet juice they use up in MO.

kxan just showed a projected radar model of the precip that shows thursday switching from frozen winter precip to straight rain by 5pm which is fantastic - this would help the melt massively - and the radar model shows all precip east of line from centerville to tyler by 630am

if this plays out as they just showed, leaving austin or houston at 9 or 10 am will work

cue imma rage for what looks like it may have been a bavarian fire drill

I'm also concerned about the possibility of ice on I-35 N and I-45 N on Thursday night or Friday morning.

I would guess that there is enough traffic on these roads even overnight that there won’t be any chance for ice buildup.  Certainly 35 with all of its commercial traffic. Maybe some desolate stretches of 45 have a dicey spot or two if it’s cold enough far enough south.

Fucking idiots staying home and not coming to tailgate for one if the biggest games in a fucking decade.

If I wasn't already attending a funeral Friday I would come to, checks media, a second funeral. Fuck. I am an hour late if traffic is good. Really want to take my boys to the game. People need to stop having weddings and also dying during football season. So cheap to get in. Dammit.

Wednesday morning update

We're finally well within the range of higher resolution models this morning, and the outlook is not great. Temperatures on Friday morning are likely to reach freezing levels in much of the Dallas area, and this should be just cold enough to allow sleet, snow, or freezing rain to stick to roads. Precipitation will occur between late Thursday morning and about sunrise on Friday. The latest models indicate that some or most of this will fall as snow and sleet, with the potential for significant accumulations. In short, I expect travel around the metroplex to be a mess on Thursday evening, night, and Friday morning.  I would anticipate significant flight disruptions on Thursday, Thursday night, and into Friday morning. Conditions should improve by the middle of the day Friday.

The best-case scenario is that air temperatures are a bit warmer than currently forecast, allowing freeways to remain snow and ice free. (I.e. the surface of the roadways remains warm enough to melt anything that falls).

The worst-case scenario is a major winter storm that shuts down the metroplex on Thursday and much of Friday morning, possibly into the early afternoon.

Doesn't it only have to be 1 or 2 degrees higher to just be above freezing the whole time?

As a notherner, I would say yes. It usually takes decent accumulation or several days in the 20s for a small amount of snow to stick the the roads/grass. Anything under an inch usually melts right away. A couple inches may cool it down enough to stick.

Well I am very familiar with this, I've lived in cold weather climate full time where snow is permanently on the ground. The issue here is everyone freaking out because it's 31-32F if it's 33F it just never freezes.

I still think properly brined/treated roads won't freeze at all at 32/31.

I agree with you! I think your biggest problem is the drivers who see wet pavement and freak out thinking it is ice and refuse to touch their gas.

I am now realizing you were talking about the temperature not the roads. Yeah a few degrees warmer and it is just a sprinkle of rain.

You have more faith in north Texas road crews than I do. There is the potential for a big mess. Because temperatures are going to be cutting it very close to freezing -- i.e. 30 degrees vs 33 degrees matters a lot, and we just can't say with precision where the freeze line will occur -- it could go either way. But I think people should be prepared for a pretty bad situation.

This may be a really dumbass yank question, but when they heard there was going to be a chance of snow, why wouldn't they drive down some salt trucks from somewhere and pre-salt the roads? I understand most of the country is getting pounded but $$$$$$ makes the world go round, would have though Jerrah would have at least gotten a few to clear out everything close to the stadium.

Even if you clear the roads immediately around the stadium, the DFW area is very large with an immense amount of freeways. People will be coming from all over. Southern cities just do not have the winterization capacity to deal with the entire area ahead of a storm.

The metro cities are all going to put a sand/salt combo on the roads tonight. The issue is always the overpasses as those are tricky to keep ice from forming and we're a metro area with nothing but overpasses. The toll road authorities may use something different and the only tollroad that's near Arlington is the Bush tollroad that goes from North Dallas/Plano towards DFW Airport and end in Grand Prairie.

I'm anticipating DISD calling it tonight and the kids don't go in to school on Thursday. I'm fine with that since I have a 17 year old that's never driven in the snow before.

How far north do you need to bring salt trucks down from? Nebraska? Missouri? There's a metric f-ton of road infrastructure in that area, not just around the stadium, but within a few miles. That's a lot of salt. Here in Chicago, they keep dedicated salt storage buildings EVERYWHERE to handle that kind of coverage. Jerry would have to fly in several C-17's with that kind of salt and trucks, lol

Along the tollroads and most highways, there are large covered structures that have the sand/salt mixtures in large mounds. I'm not sure if there's de-icer trucks.

There is just no way that it could be done for an area the size of DFW. The amount of salt needed would be more than feasible to bring down. That doesn't even address where you would get it. Ignornig that everyone needs what they have, the usually order seasonally not on demand - so not a lot of places have anything to spare short term.
