If Quinn wins a championship:

1. Vince - One of the best QBs in CFB history
2. Quinn - A big time throw to advance, historical stats, and would have 1 title.
3. Street - Some big time throws and won two national titles
4. Colt - His accomplishments as a QB have been posted in this thread in regards to historical standpoint in NCAA
5. Layne - self explanatory

Do Street and Layne belong on here? Their QB responsibilities included: toss left, toss right, pitch the ball if option play. That was it. There’s no comparing them to modern QBs

Damn I’m young enough to forget Street would likely be above Quinn. I’m also old enough to have watched Colt in person and say he is a better QB than Quinn. But you just can’t put Quinn below Colt if Quinn has a title.

This. Street is #2 on my list, to wit:

1) VY

2) Street

3) Colt McCoy

4) Bobby Layne

5) Applewhite

6) James Brown

If Quinn Ewers plays well enough to win national championship this year, I think he moves up to #4. As of right now he will probably bump Major.

Go look up UT’s statistical record holder lists. Not even top 5, top 10. Look at passing yards, passing TDs, rushing yards, rushing TDs, total offense, single-season, career, game. Any of it. Let me know if you see Street or Layne’s name  pop up even once on any of those lists.

I think you can. Colt was just too historically great at his position. He’s probably the *best* QB, meaning the best best player of the quarterback position we ever had.

Never seen Street, but he went 20-0 and won a NC. So if wins and NC are the measure, I figure he has to be pretty high on the list

I’m not saying they weren’t good. They were good at what they did, which was 95% hand or toss the ball to the running backs. That’s all those teams needed them to do to be great. But that doesn’t make them the best QBs or players we’ve ever had.

I can't do it. The modern era of football is so different and asks the QB to do too much.

He is an all-time great longhorn but he doesn't belong on the top Texas QB list. Especially in a thread where people have criticized our QB even though he has won a ton of games while the starter. Take away wins and even Arch is higher on the list than Street. Go ahead, bash me, many won't like the take but you can't combine the two eras, there is nowhere to compare them appropriately.

Always thought the correct way to look at these comparisons is to compare them to their contemporaries. Game has changed so much from VY, Colt, to Ewer let alone Street. I didnt see Street, so I really have no way to base an opinion on where he belongs. I do have VY and Colt above Ewers. Both of those guys were the best QB in the nation or in a heated discussion for that honor for at least one season. Quinn has not

You morons that only look at stats are the worst when talking about this shit. Like no fucking shit a QB in 2024 will have more yards than a QB in 1969.

Dude is 20-0 as a starter and he made plays that made him 20-0.

If you go by strictly stats VY isn't top 5 in any major passing category in program history

Quinn needs to play well above his norm the next two games to win a title.  But to engage in the hypothetical and the QB debate, I assume your #2 ranking bumps him in front of Colt, and behind Vince.  So between Colt and Quinn, it really depends on how much weight someone in this debate puts on a championship.

Even if Quinn plays like Superman over the next two games, it's going to be hard for me to put him in front of Colt.  Yes, Colt has no titles, and Quinn would have one.  But Colt's overall body of work as a QB is much better than Quinn's.  We won a lot of games because of Colt.  We also won a few games in spite of Quinn.

Expand

Considering what Colt had to work with his final season and in the MNC, not a fair shake at all to cast aside his body of work. Very good chance he wins the title without the injury, but considering the crap OL, poor RBs and little more than Shipley as a goto receiving threat. It's amazing the difference he made with one badass WR and some other decent ones. I agree, I'm not sure what kind of spectacular play between here and the end of playoffs it would take for me to move him above Colt, or if it's even possible.

QB doesn't mean "guy that throws the ball" it means the guy who took all the snaps and ran the offense on the field.

Your stat line points are completely moot, it doesn't matter what era it is in, the position has evolved, but so has WR and RB and TE and Tackle and Guard and Center. Along with every other position on the field.

It matters too me. Previous to modern football, Street was the best UT QB of all time. Modern football he isn't. Isn't his fault. Times are different. People didn't throw the ball back then. It is almost two different sports when you compare the two eras. Big linemen were what 260#. It wasn't a year around sport. Criticize me all you want. Its my opinion and I just don't think you can compare the two. If you go by wins and championships alone, sure he should probably be the greatest of all time but people aren't saying that are they? So, what exactly is the criteria? If everyone else can make up their own, I will too.

James Street is 20-0 as a starting QB at Texas

James Street had multiple big plays to propel Texas to a national championship

James Streets stats aren't good so we can't rank him above <Insert QB Here>

No, I'm not. I just have a difference of opinion. Not that it belongs in this thread to begin with. What is the fucking criteria? There isn't any, it is all subjective thereby it is just fucking opinion. I have mine, you have yours thereby I'm wrong because you own the place. No need to be a dick.

So, it doesn't matter what the stats are? How do we choose who is the greatest, who belongs on that list? Is it favorite number? You can't say, no one is saying.

Vince IMHO was the greatest, why, because he put the team on his back and did whatever was needed to win. Colt was second as he eventually did the same thing until he got injured.

I didn't watch Street play and neither did you so all I have to go by are statistics. Those don't look very good outside of wins. That includes running the football. All that being said it isn't fair to compare them because it is different eras that had completely different expectations for QB play. James Street was never asked to go dominate the other teams defense and win a football game. he was never asked to show the ball 40 times and run it 15 in one game. It just isn't a fair comparison and you know it. I already said pre-modern football he was the greatest QB in longhorn nation. What else is it you want me to concede? I can't in good faith say overall he is high on that list and I'm not sure many other people are either.

If I have to include him based on football that I have watched in my lifetime with what I know about how the game is currently played, he is behind a number of QBs. Quinn being one of them.
