Maybe you like Major more than most cause you give him credit for shit he didn’t do.

Simms did not play a lick in San Diego.  It was The Major that turned it over 3/4 times in that first half.

Seems as though some tag Simms with an OU loss even though he didn’t start.

Yeah good catch…that’s right he sat that one out b/c he shit the bed so bad and got Ced hurt in the b12 CC Game.

You're the one trying to compare him to Colt McCoy. No one is going to take you seriously doing shit like that.

I don't even see much if any Ewers hate in this thread. We all acknowledge he did his part in helping to make Texas nationally competitive again but we all also acknowledge that he just wasn't an elite college QB.

Vince and Colt are extremely high fucking bars. There is nothing wrong with not reaching that level. Those dudes have their names up and sections named after them at DKR for a reason. Quinn is short of that honor and that's fine.

Huh? Dude walked away from The University of Texas with the same amount of hardware Colt did. I think dude set all the passing records for a CCG. He also made it to a second CCG and threw for 360 in that one. He made it to back to back playoff games and led Texas to the two most successful back to back seasons since Colt. Yet here we are comparing him to Sam fuckin Ehlinger? How is that not hate? Man, I see what Herby was talking about all those years ago. We are def a shitty fanbase. You guys shit on me for simply giving him his due. You got Derka over here saying he would take Freshman Colt over RS QE, then making excuses for Colt throwing 18 fucking interceptions his So yr. He threw those 18 fucking INTs because Jamaal Charles was a homerun or nothing back that year and Colt was pressing, being put in a lot of long yardage situations, not because of injuries. You say that about Colt, you are an asshole. You give Quinn the same leeway of struggling with no running game and you are also an asshole. Derka is on here talking about how Colt had to play with GDGD. Well, GDGD figured out that if you cannot run the football, spread the field and use the short passing game and timely QB runs to supplement it. That one decision is responsible for all Colt's success. What if Mack and GD stubbornly ran a pro-style offense all Colt's career? What if they did that for VY? Because that's exactly what Sark just did for 3 years with a QB who thrived when we opened it up. No, there is def hate here.

Oh shut up already. Nobody was talking shit about Quinn when we were discussing this. And you decide to to go in on Colt and even Sam again to further try to promote Quinn.

pretty much everyone agrees Quinn is in the top 5-7 range of QBs for the university in history.

Quinn had 17 turnovers his last year on campus. Colt had a down Soph year. There is a difference there. Colt became a Heisman candidate. That is how development is supposed to work.  Ewers had no running game? People like to talk about how Quinn went 2-0 vs A&M and OU. Texas ran for 417 yards in those games. Only 2 teams in SEC play ran for a higher average per rushing attempt than Texas this year (Bama and Auburn). Auburn Qbs ran for over 300 yards and Bama went for >750 yards, compared to 18 for Texas (Manning 108 and Quinn -82). There is the difference. That brings me to things that Sam and Colt did for the team that Quinn could not. Elhinger rushed for 1,903 yards in his career with 33 tds and 3 fumbles. Colt ran for 1571 and 20 TDs (couldnt find fumbles). Quinn finished his career with -59 yards with 8 TDs, and 7 fumbles.

Your argument hinges on team accomplishments. Last year Texas set a record for draft picks. That record might be broken this year. Those were arguably the most talented teams Texas has fielded in the modern era. The draft picks are evidence of that.

FEI ratings for Offense and defense:

Quinn:

2024: OFEI 18, DFEI 3

2023: OFEI 19, DFEI 6

2022: OFEI 17, DFEI 8

Elhinger:

2020: 17, DFEI 37

2019: 8, DFEI 42

2018: 17, DFEI 29

Colt:

2009: OFEI 17, DFEI 6

2008: OFEI 2, DFEI 4

2007: OFEI 19, DFEI 42

You notice anything there? Quinn never played with a defense that was outside the top 10. He is the only Qb on the list that can say that. He is also the only QB not to have a top 10 offense. When you are comparing QBs, you should look at how those players compared to their contemporaries. Why are Colt and VY considered well above Sam and Quinn? Because they were Heisman finalists, All-Americans, and 1st team All-Conference players. VY was the best QB in his time. You could certainly argue Colt was the best or damn close. Quinn and Sam were never All-Americans, never Heisman finalists, and never 1st team All-Conference. I view Quinn and Sam as pretty comparable college players. Both were good QBs but never considered one of the best QBs in the nation. The difference in team success can be seen on the defensive side of their teams. That is not hate, it is just being honest about the product on the field.

I never saw James Street or those old effers play...so here is my list:

1a. Colt - thought he was gonna win a natty, but that damn injury. To me, he just BLED Burnt Orange.

1b. Vince - you know, the national title has a lot to do with this. One of the greatest athletes in college football history. I just think Colt is more "Texas".

2. Major - loved that he looked like my 5th grade PE teacher. Competitive as hell.

3. Sam - Another "bleeds orange" guy. Always loved Sammy.

4. Quinn - Loved what he did for our program. A great guy and a perfect one to lead us back to relevance.

5. JB - Made me fall in love with Texas football.

6. Peter - My first memories of Texas football involved Gardere.

There is a good chance Arch moves to 2 or 1a-c depending on this next year. :)

It's definitely insane to say the run game....yeah as a RS FR and RS SO Colt had Jamaal. Colt's RS JR year he was the teams leading rusher(561 yads, 11 TDs). His RS SR year(348 yards, 3 TDs) he was second leading rusher only behind Tre Newton(552 yards, 6 TDs).

I don’t remember the details, but something like 4-5 of Chris Simms “victories” as a starter  are in games where he was bailed out by Major Applewhite.

Those two go hand in hand IMO as they both each sucked at times and bailed each other out at various points. It also feels like classic Texas fan revisionist history lore because people just love to give Major more props because he's the feel good story.

My modern rankings (Mack - 2024) for qb1’s:

Vince - not debatable

Colt - tough, competitive, athletic, elite accuracy, elite decision making his jr and sr years. Went 3-1 against OU…

Ewers - actually very similar to colt in that they both excelled in the intermediate passing game, except he didn’t grow into the elite decision making ability like colt and not as athletic as colt. Let’s be honest, he’s not as tough either. However, he was still damn good and helped sark resurrect this program. Went 2-1 against OU (would be 3-0 if our defense didn’t give up a td with one minute to play). Went 2-2 in the playoffs. Beat Bama at Bama.

Sam - put Ewers’ arm on this action figure badass and we would have won the big12 2x despite Mensa’s idiocy.

Simms - great player and elite arm, but not a big game player. OU and Mack f’d his head up pretty good.

Beuchele - could’ve been great, but Charlie Strong era not so good and the not a fit for Mensa’s offense.

Applewhite - favorite of mine when I was at UT, great competitor, but just lacking in arm and athleticism.

Case Herpa Derk! - horrible qb but fuck aTm. Riverwalk Romeo. Amateur home movie buff.

I liked Buechele but hes not better than Applewhite who was voted the best offensive player in the conference one year. Injuries hampered both players. Hel Id take David Ash over him.

I’m not sure this is correct.  1999 was pretty much Majors job.  Simms only threw 36 passes all year per sports-reference.com.  Simms started at A&M, think he left with the lead, we lost.

In 2000, Simms only threw double digit passes in 5 games.  The opener in which Major threw almost twice as many passes.  Simms started.  Houston Major threw no TDs, Simms 1. Simms started.  We won 48-0.  Major started versus OU.  We lost anyway.  Then the final two regular season games which Major didn’t play.  So maybe 2 but hard to say we lose when the other team scores nothing.

In 2001, Major only threw more than 5 passes in the CU game not including the bowl game.

So looks like maybe 2, both of which chances are we win anyway.

Didn't Applewhite getting his knee messed up on the bowl game vs AR have a lot to do with things as well.  He missed almost all the offseason so Simms had all the reps, and then started the next season

I don’t remember the specifics, but, yes, he had a knee issue that was impactful.  Arkansas sounds right.

Looking back both of them had a number of 3/4 turnover games.  We know it, but Stoops had our number beyond 1999.  They throttled us several times, but 12-0 in 2004 is pretty bad too.

Not how I remember it going down, but neither of us are going to actually dig through it, so let’s agree that Major was better and part as friends.

I did look through it.  I was curious/interested enough to look.  That’s what I came up with.

It was a long time ago so specific details get a little fuzzy.

I am not making a claim as to which one is better.  They both had some good moments and both had some less than good ones.  Just laying the details.

QB A: 12 G, 214/318 (67.3%), 2,699 yds, 19 TD, 8 INT, 8.5 y/a, 224.9 ypg, 153.3 QB rtg

QB B: 14 G, 293/445 (69.0%), 3,472 yds, 31 TD, 12 INT, 7.8 y/a, 248 ypg, 149.0 QB rtg

Spoiler

QB A is sophomore david ash playing on a crappy Texas team whose WR 2 was mike davis, and whose WR3 got 26 total catches. if i could find the YAC yards this comparison would look even worse for Quinn. Ash was also playing for a totally checked-out Mack and GD.

QB B is obviously Quinn from this year, where he was surrounded by NFL talent and top flight coaches.

and to the record, blind comparisons aside, i 100% believe that a healthy david ash performs just as well if not better than Quinn did on these last two Texas teams. no question in my mind we would have had a much more open playbook and downfield passing game. otoh, you have QE playing for Mack and GD, throwing to jaxson shipley and mike davis (the only two wr with more than 26 catches on that team) and QE struggles his ass off. all things considered i’m more impressed by david ash’s sophomore year than i am by Quinn’s RS junior year.
