How often did that happen with 20 TDs and 24 INTs? You weren't even alive I'm pretty sure........just like me. He was asked to hand off, pitch the ball, run some and throw 8 times a game.

Sounds like a defensive struggle. I understand your point. It is still near impossible to compare the eras. Street was 6 of 10  for 124 yards and 2 INTs.

Street was named MVP of the undefeated 1969 national championship team, and he played QB.  I think that's reason enough to put him way high in the pantheon of UT QBs.  No losses, ever?  Even more reason.

I get what @Longhornlove is saying. It's the same way we shun Bill Russell for Jordan. It's more eye test as you cannot compare eras. Street won a lot of games but VY was the Michael Jordan of college football. Just eye-popping talent.

Great, where do you put him? How high and why? I have no idea where he lands for me yet. I literally never seen him play until I watched two big plays on YouTube today. Hard to rank something you wen't alive to see. When I was watching football early in my life it wasn't like there was a YouTube to go pull up the film. You read about it, if that. The people commenting that I am wrong didn't watch it either. I only know what I know and what I see. I see stats that outside of wins are terrible in comparison to what we have been used to since Texas ditched the wishbone.

My top 4 right now is

1. VY

2. COLT

3. QUINN

4. SAM

What if Quinn goes for 30/31 and 6 tds no interceptions with no run game and we lose 43-42. Would Quinn have put the team on his back??

Only if he is the leading rusher and plays safety as well.

I think for me in the modern era

1. VY - self explanatory

2. Colt - didn't matter the down or distance, you knew he was getting that first down and moving the game forward

3. Ehlinger - Had major IT factor, played on shittier teams, but dude returned Texas to its proper stage with a Sugar Bowl win . Would have won more if Herman wasn't a total dipshit

4. Quinn - back to back playoff runs , big 12 championship, sec champion birth , and led us to an amazing start in the sec . If he wins the big game I'd move him up

---

5. Applewhite/Simms - Good but not Great , never won the big games

6. Ash / Case McCoy  - surprising bright spots in a otherwise decade of darkness

---

Sucks too much to be numbered - Swoopes, Heard, Gilbert, Card, Mock , Thompson

1 - Vince

2 - Street

3 - Colt

Things get fuzzy after that.

Doesn’t matter if Quinn wins the title this year or not, he doesn't make top 3.

Some of you numbnuts can't understand the difference between best QB and best QB measured by modern standards.

So, fuck you guys for making me agree with BO&W. 🤬🤬🤬

Quinn is not above Colt. I don't care if we win the NC by 500 points.

If I  would have had a boy, his name would have been Colt but it would be damn near impossible for me to not move Quinn above Colt if he ends the season holding he trophy.

Would you move Tre Wisner ahead of Ricky Williams?

Nope and you know why along with everyone else on the planet.

I think it would get him out of the Ehlinger/Simms/etc. log jam but there would still be a gulf between him and Colt.

You think very highly of Applewhite who didn't win shit , he was fun to watch but winning big games matters

It matters too me. Previous to modern football, Street was the best UT QB of all time. Modern football he isn't. Isn't his fault. Times are different. People didn't throw the ball back then. It is almost two different sports when you compare the two eras. Big linemen were what 260#. It wasn't a year around sport. Criticize me all you want. Its my opinion and I just don't think you can compare the two. If you go by wins and championships alone, sure he should probably be the greatest of all time but people aren't saying that are they? So, what exactly is the criteria? If everyone else can make up their own, I will too.

The only thing most of us know about Street is his 4th down throw.

Well I am old, but that’s a bad take. If you were old enough to see Major Applewhite play you’re old know to know he was miles better than Sam (no disrespect to Ehlinger). Despite sharing time he set 48 school records, won two bowl games when that still meant something, and to your ridiculous point about not winning big games, he beat Nebraska at home not to mention the last elite Aggy team.
And Ash? come on man.

Ash is way the fuck down the list near the 'who gives a fuck stage' , the only reason i even mentioned him is that decade of QB play was BLEAK . Split all the hairs you want down that far the list it don't mean a shit

Damn I’m young enough to forget Street would likely be above Quinn. I’m also old enough to have watched Colt in person and say he is a better QB than Quinn. But you just can’t put Quinn below Colt if Quinn has a title.

If I had to win one game I know who the fuck I'd pick.  I also know who won the most games.

Do Street and Layne belong on here? Their QB responsibilities included: toss left, toss right, pitch the ball if option play. That was it. There’s no comparing them to modern QBs

I can't do it. The modern era of football is so different and asks the QB to do too much.

He is an all-time great longhorn but he doesn't belong on the top Texas QB list.

These are terrible takes. Athletes get ranked based on how elite they were against the competition they faced in their era, not how they’d fare in some time-travel scenario against todays competition.

The American military that took the beaches at Normandy could be easily driven back into the sea by any global power with today’s modern warfare technology.  It doesn’t make them any less badass.

Not calling anyone out, this applies to most of the comments in this thread...

Ignorant, adjective -

not having enough knowledge, or information about something.

Perhaps a remedial understanding of the history and evolution of college football would help some of you.

Never seen Street, but he went 20-0 and won a NC. So if wins and NC are the measure, I figure he has to be pretty high on the list

If not for Street, the Wishbone offense probably gets scrapped. The Wishbone glorified running backs and Quarterbacks like never before, ushering in one of the greatest eras of college football.

"He's a Longhorn Legend"

As the only undefeated Texas QB with more than 10 wins in history, Street is probably the only Texas QB that never gave fans a reason to bench him.

I'm just tuning in to watch the dumbasses not understand that history is typically measured against contemporaries.  Shit changes over time.  Cumulative stats are inflated by longer careers/terms of service.  Only someone with the brain of a child would judge the following simply by their counting stats instead of their impact on history:

Rolls Royce Silver Ghost vs. Honda Civic:  Ghost has a top speed of 60 mph and a 4 speed clutch.  Honda Civic runs away with it.
Jesse Owens vs. Derrick Florence (1986 Galveston Ball HS):  Florence would smoke Owens 10.13 to 10.3.
Red Grange 1925 vs. Keaontay Ingram 2019:  Ingram's 853 yds exceed the Galloping Ghost by about 250 yds.

So I guess some of us would say that the Honda Civic was a better car than the Silver Ghost, Derrick Florence is a better athlete than Jesse Owens, and that Red Grange was an inferior running back to Keaontay Ingram.  The rest of us would say that times change, and of course Jesse Owens is a better historical athlete than some rando high school kid none of us has ever heard of.

To wit:

  1. VY
  2. Street
  3. Colt
  4. Layne
  5. Ewers

Ewers jumps Layne with a title.  Shoutout to Carlisle and Phillips for winning titles.

I’d like to drop here that in a Cotton Bowl win Bobby Layne scored every single one of Texas’ 40 points. He led the SWC in total offense one year and passing two years. There are some really stupid takes in this discussion and I’m an Aggie.

Relative to national competition while playing he’s absolutely in your top 5 and probably top 3.

The modern era of Texas football doesn’t happen without Major Applewhite’s biggest two wins. He’s a pivotal player in the history of the program.

Layne had two.

I get the modernity bias, and for sure the title is what fans care about in college. Only one player is in both the NFL and CFB halls of fame.  He also played in an era where media bias for northern schools was very real.   He can’t be left off.

You morons that only look at stats are the worst when talking about this shit. Like no fucking shit a QB in 2024 will have more yards than a QB in 1969.

Dude is 20-0 as a starter and he made plays that made him 20-0.

If you go by strictly stats VY isn't top 5 in any major passing category in program history

Yeah.  The greatest QBs aren't necessarily the greatest with stats.

1.  Vince

2. Colt

3. Street

4. Layne

Nobody else warrants being on the list.

He does have one phenomenal stat.  And a great story.  When heckled while playing baseball against OU he shut them up by holding up 4 fingers.  The 4 times he beat OU at QB.
