All time Texas QB Ranking Discussion - 2025

Complete hyperbole. This version of OU isn't close to how bad Blake's teams were. Blake's teams went 3-8, 4-8, and 5-6.  Last year's OU team was one Bedlam loss from being in the college football playoff themselves. They aren't a bad team. They are a decent team with bad QB play. Put Gabriel back on that team and they win 10 games this year.

When I said 3rd I mean of our time. If you are bringing Street and Layne into this then Colt isn't second. There is no way Sam Ehlinger is better than Ewers. Outside of last year's OU we lost to teams that were largely more talented than us with Ewers. You cannot say the same about Ehlinger as much as we love him.

I take issue with that statement.

Our losses under Quinn:

Bama 22  - I will give him a pass here. He was cooking and then got injured. Most likely a win if he doesnt get injured.

Oklahoma State 22- Not more talented than us. He played very poorly. 3 INT

TCU 22- Not more talented than us. He played poorly. 1 INT

Washington 22- About equal to us in talent. Quinn played above average, there were some bad drops.

OU 23- Inferior Talent and we lost. He played poorly. 2 INT and a lost fumble

Washington 23- Equal talent. Had multiple chances from the 10 yard line and couldnt get it done.

UGA 24 (2)- Equal talent. Both games he didnt play well, combined for 3 INT and a lost fumble.

OSU 24- The only team with a talent edge over us that we played in his entire era (and it was a slight edge). He played above average. But couldnt get it done.

His legacy would look much different if he couldve gotten it done in the playoffs. But he didnt. And that is the difference between your name going up in the stadium and just being another QB who played at UT.

It’s not even hyperbole. Objectively the worst teams are better than 2/3 of Venables teams, all of Riley’s teams are better than Venables OU teams. OU is in the shittiest phase since Blake. That’s all objective.

Did I say Sam Ehlinger? No way is Quinn a better QB than Vince, Street, Colt, or Layne. So at best he’s 5th or 6th. I’d argue Duke Carlisle for 5th because he actually won a title.

It's for sure hyperbole. They were a win away from the CFP last year. They struggled in a new league that has more talent top to bottom than the Big12, where OU and us were the two most talented teams pretty much since inception. Give them Gabriel back and how many wins do they have?

As far as all time I put Quinn right behind wherever you think Colt should go. I usually break up the eras because football is so much different than it used to be. First, NC's were just "declared". Most people never got to see the people in person so it was mostly all hype, and we were discounting teams with black players back then.

That OU team was not "one win away from the CFP." That is some revisionist ass history. They were at least three wins away. If they had beaten OSU in Bedlam, they wouldve had to beat Kansas in Lawrence, and then Texas in the big 12 championship game also. There was a 0% chance a 1 loss OU with a loss to Kansas was getting in over 1 loss UGA, 0 loss FSU, or 1 loss SEC champ Bama.

"Our" era. What does that even mean lol. I dont know you and you dont know me. Maybe I am 78 years old.

It means you were around and had a feel for the game at the time. You saw football through the eyes of someone who knew how innovative the wishbone was, and had a grasp of how Street's impact to the game was. You know, like how WE Gen Xers understood what that VY zone read was about during his time in college football and how unstoppable it was in 2005. I mean, if we are going to try and act like people are dumb here you can do that somewhere else, but if you want to have a serious discussion then let's do it.

I’d say 23 Bama and Arizona St this year are his signature wins. Both are rather meaningless now though. Arizona State is the first game you can say without a doubt we win because he did something.

How on Earth are those wins meaningless?

If they beat us twice they are getting in. We were one of the best teams in the country. Beating us matters on your resume. Point is they weren't John Blake bad. Let's stay on task here. Y'all are moving the goalposts. They won 10 games.

That wasnt my point. My point was that you said you were ranking quarterbacks in "our era". That means nothing. That could be anything. It's a goofy thing to say. Say "in the post 2000 era" or something. But I cannot even build a coherent post when you havent put out a proper period of time other than "our era".

Lol, no they were not. A 1 loss Texas only got into the playoff because we beat Bama on the road. Our only loss was a last second loss to OU at a neutral site. A large portion of this board didnt even think we would get in.

I guarantee you, OU with a loss to Kansas and two wins over Texas arent getting in the dance. They wouldve been ranked #6, period.

No one has gotten anything done since VY left and that's why we have no more NCs. We've won exactly two conference championships since then. One belongs to Colt. The other to Ewers. Those are the facts. The fact that y'all are trying to downplay the only other guy to win one says a lot.

first, your entire post is a perfect recap of the applewhite-sims era. you covered everything.

second, that lsu staff is the GOAT college football staff. saban as HC, jimbo as OC, Muschamp as DC, and Kirby Smart on ST. it is a testament to our talent that we were able to dominate that game with mack and GDGD running the show.

Colt is the 2nd best of all time including every era. Jesus Christ. He only won 45* games here and finished in the top 3 of Heisman voting TWICE.

Colt is behind Street if we are going all time. How you can say he is above a QB that went 20-0 with two national championships?

Street wasn't on the 1970 team.

And I can say that because Colt was a better and much more accomplished player individually and had his own 25-2 run and wasn't really the reason for either loss.

That's right. He graduated in 70. Still 20-0 and a NC has to go in front.

Nope. We would need a two time national champion, Heisman winning QB for that conversation to start. Everyone in America knows VY won the Hesiman that year. Not only that, he had the second best team in the country the year before.

the wild thing about the asu win is that if bert auburn hits a chip shot FG at the end of regulation then that game ends with quinn being the goat (in the pejorative) and with his Texas career ending with back to back poor playoff games on the heels of a season where he routinely struggled to move the chains after half time. that bert auburn missed FG was huge for QE’s legacy in the immediate aftermath. years from now i doubt it means as much, but it would be damn hard to justify any of this “is quinn our 3rd or 4th best ever QB?” talk if QE doesn’t get those final two scores vs ASU.

I mean I don't understand why that "has" to go in front other than it being more of a folksy legend.

Those DKR teams were fucking loaded and playing under the best coach in the country. Colt was starting to work with some dogshit on his side of the ball - both in the booth and on the field - by 2009. I'm not going to penalize Colt for the D blowing it late against Tech or him picking up the knock he did against Bama.

If you want to put the guy that won a National championship ahead by default then I get it but I don't agree and wouldn't have it that way. I mean colt was a two-time consensus first-team AA and a two-time Heisman finalist. Street didn't do either of those things once.

I'd put Street above everyone else I think.

The two things Quarterbacks are measured by here at Texas, how you did vs OU, and how you did in conference championship games.

Colt Big 12 Championship- 20-36 184 yards 0TDs and 3 INTs

Quinn Big 12 Championship-  35-46 452 yards 4 TDs and 1INT

Colt vs OU- 3-1 record. 79-118(67%) 836y 6TDs 2INTs over 4 years

Quinn vs OU- 2-1 record. 72-96(75%) 834y 6TDs 4INTs over 3 years

Combine the two and it looks like this

Colt- 96-154 1020yards 6TDs and 5INTs

Quinn- 107-142 1286yards 10TDs and 5INTs

Add the Georgia game for Quinn and ......

Colt- 96-154 1020yards 6TDs and 5INTs

Quinn- 134-188 1644yards 11TDs 6INTs

Again, this is someone arguing in bad faith. Colt struggled mightily in 09 vs OU and in the Big12 championship game. Funny how we are NOW trying to paint a different picture. Most everyone considers Colt number two in our lifetimes behind VY, but to try and claim that Quinn is miles behind Colt is dishonest. He threw for 452 and 4 TDs in the Big12 championship game and gave OU the two worst ass whippings in our lifetimes. This whole narrative that he was just along for the ride is false. 49-0 isn't "along for the ride". 452 yards and 4TDs isn't "along for the ride" either. Let me remind everyone that he piled up these numbers in 3 years. We should tip the cap and thank dude for his service.

This is terrible.. It’s like comparing times from a someone who ran a 200m with someone that ran a 400m. You cannot believe this has any substance or logic behind it

Quinn’s 2 wins were vs bad OU teams. 1 came with Uncle Rico at QB. That was of the easier games that year.

Because Street played on a supremely talented team and did nothing but hand the ball off or pitch it. Look at his passing stats. Look at his rushing stats. They are abysmal. ANYONE on that team could’ve ran that offense to that level of effectiveness. It was new and no one knew how to stop it. It just happened to be Street.

I will say I have earned more respect for Layne from this thread. He really could throw it. I have actually lost respect for Street from this thread. I had no idea how inconsequential he was to those teams until I saw the stats.

I know you're retarded but being the QB of the wishbone is more than just handing or pitching off. The entire fucking offense is predicated on your decision making.

End crashing? Pull it. Then read the linebacker to keep or pitch it. Insanely complex.

Yeah it would take a heck of a lot for sure. Maybe it would have to be a combo of all 3 of those. Heisman, nearly all time statistical leader in most passing categories/touchdowns, and a national title?

Among the dumbest comments ever. Fact is that Bill Bradley completely failed to be able to run that offense. If you don't know who that was you are beyond hope( hint...he was on the cover of Sports Illustrated before he played a down in college)

Plus.....that extremely talented team you refer to had gone 6-4 three years in a row prior to Street....

When it comes to a UT QB's foray into the NFL, certainly nobody comes even close to the long storied career of Bobby Layne. I suspect he engineered dozens and dozens of miracle comebacks both at Texas and in the pros. He was also a great college pitcher, as was Street. Pretty sure Layne won an NFL Championship or two.

That said, different times... Vince was a phenomenon. And he engineered a last second comeback in the greatest college football game ever played against two-peat USC in front of a massive audience. He refused to let us lose.

How bout "co-greatest" ever. C-GOAT.

Colt... Colt. Too bad he got injured against Alabama. Too bad our fucking coach hadn't given his backup many real-time fucking snaps. We'd have won that game.  With a healthy Colt, slam dunk

Street... Maybe fourth.
