Oh, and just chatting with a friend who is an international relations expert, and something of a gov't insider.  He puts the chances of war with Canada and an invasion of Greenland at the level of "near-certainty."

He's not wrong.

Buckle up.  We're about to go invadin' ERRBODY.

OK so we invade. We destroy their military. We open the borders. Then what? What is accomplished? A long slow burning insurgency. Thats it.

That was my counterpoint.  We get an insurgency.  We get counter-strikes in the US.  And, we may well get at least partial mutiny within US military units, as well as possible outright secession of US states that are not willing to go along with such bullshit.  Not inconceivable to see the West Coast go.  Hawaii could be interesting as well.

Don't forget the cross border marriages. Checked. There are over 800,000 of them.

Shit, what do you do with all the Canadians living here in the US, and vice versa?

And for that matter, Canada is in the commonwealth.  What does the UK do if the US attacks Canada?  By the way, that's my one real hope of averting such a stupid move: UK military officials having conversations with their American counterparts about how disastrous it would be for the UK and the US to got to war....and we WOULD have to go to war.  Remember, the UK will follow its duties/obligations over a cliff when it comes to entering a war.

And yes, I've already had conversations with my American children living abroad in the UK about contingency plans if the war happens.

Again, this is so beyond stupid, it can't be measured by any instrument humanity has devised.

A shitload of our military has fought alongside Canadians for all our excursions and are likely deployed with them now. If our military caves so easily to a psychopath, well yeah. Insane,  but very likely.

We agree that the deciding factor is the military - loyalty to the constitution and telegraphed warnings to admin insiders of “don’t order us to do this, you won’t like how it goes,” including communications they are already having with their counterparts in Canada and the UK.
You don’t spout the kind of belligerent rhetoric Trump is spouting WITHOUT intending to invade.

The 1st Special Service Force (FSSF) was an elite joint American–Canadian commando unit in World War II, formed by Lieutenant Colonel Robert T. Frederick of the Operations Division of the U.S. General Staff.

The modern American and Canadian special operations forces trace their heritage to this unit.

Trump is a bully who likes to talk tough. He’s also a giant pussy, like all bullies, and he’s not going to invade Greenland let alone Canada. He’s more likely to build a border wall and make Mexico pay for it. It’s just bullshit he spews that shouldn’t be taken seriously. It’s all a distraction to draw attention away from his assault on our own country.

Until he talks so much shit that he talks himself into a corner where he has no choice but to act.
Sure, ignore the threat like you’ve ignored all the others that have actually come to pass. That seems wise.

so trump pretty much assisted russian with their recent Kursk offensive ?

interesting foreign policy decision, allegedly

Same as the months long holdup of military support, spurred on by Trump, cost the Ukrainians Avdiivka and a host of cities and territory in the Donetsk region. It's almost like these dipshits are working for Russia.

There is no way the rest of NATO would stay neutral in that situation. Even if they didn’t respond entirely, it would throw us into the worst depression imaginable.

Another act of arson against America’s global power and influence— yesterday an EO took the axe to U.S. Agency for Global Media (which operates Voice of America and funds Radio Free Europe/Liberty and Radio Free Asia).  I understand furloughs start for RFA on Monday, and this comes after Kari Lake eliminated the agencies’ access to AP, AFP, Reuters, etc. In every meeting with tyrants and dictators across Eurasia and East Asia, they demand the closure of RFE/RL and RA.  Chinese state media will take its place.

DJT is also shuttering the Wilson Center,  which operates with only 1/3 of its function from the feds.  It is notable an “undesirable organization” per the Kremlin.

And a bad ass organization, very non-partisan, and gives voices to many. Recently attended an event on US and Mexico focus on cartels.

Yeah, that would have pissed off Trump.

I think I l’ve got a pretty good record of knowing what to take seriously and what is bullshit. I knew he wasn’t building a wall and Mexico wasn’t going to pay for the few miles of new wall he did manage to erect. Jan 6 didn’t surprise me at all. He’s not invading Canada. The people he’s looking to unleash the military on are us, the American citizens.

Can you think of a past authoritarian leader, in control of a powerful military, who did not seek to expand their rule, and empire?

We hear of the hope that our military will fracture if ordered to invade Canada. Firing on US citizens who resist the dismantling of our Constitutional Republic is, to me, more likely to create that sort of discord among the fighting forces. What better way to force the issue than to order the Pentagon to attack foreign lands?

I guess this thread is as good as any. I would drop this in the Palestine/Israle war or protest threads, but shit I don't know whats what anymore.

OK, so we are going to take a group that has lived in Gaza since before Jesus. We are going to move them to, wait for it, two really fucked up countries where tribalism IS a major issue and both are experiencing internal wars and have large Jihadi groups. So take a group that needs to move because they are to extreme, drop them into places (check my notes) full of extremists?

WTF? I am at a loss on this one. I have worked in Sudan. Yeah, not a fun place. Somalia? LMAO. Puntland ain't bad from what I know but there is nothing there. Add in Ethiopia wanting the ports?

Great fucking plan. Bold is mine.

JERUSALEM (AP) — The U.S. and Israel have reached out to officials of three East African governments to discuss using their territories as potential destinations for resettling Palestinians uprooted from the Gaza Strip under President Donald Trump’s proposed postwar plan, American and Israeli officials told The Associated Press.

The contacts with Sudan, Somalia and the breakaway region of Somalia known as Somaliland reflect the determination by the U.S. and Israel to press ahead with a plan that has been widely condemned and raised serious legal and moral issues. Because all three places are poor, and in some cases wracked by violence, the proposal also casts doubt on Trump’s stated goal of resettling Gaza’s Palestinians in a “beautiful area.”

The Office of Net Assessment is (was) among the only defense and policy entities in the U.S. government doing serious long-term planning.  Giant own goal here, it was instrumental to mapping a path to the end of the Cold War and got ahead of the China issue early.

I mean, it was an office in the Pentagon, which is the DoD HQ.  It was already aligned with DOD strategic priorities.

This, of course, means something else entirely.

I guess you’ll say Hungary is not a powerful military.

Trump is an amateur. He’s a moron. And he’s a pussy. He’s not going to invade Canada the way Putin invaded Ukraine. It’s nonsense to think that he will.

He’s attacking THIS COUNTRY. That’s the imminent threat. Canada is just a distraction.

Orbán.

Fine. Orban hasn’t, yet.

What about the second part of my post? Do you think the US military will not balk at being deployed against its citizens? If you think there is a chance that could happen, then an opportunity to weed out, diminish, those principled enough to object would be a safer first step.

Trump certainly acts like a moron. But, he is not the only power player in this threat to our Republic.

Calling my shot here: since they like to use asinine interpretations of long-forgotten laws, we’ll see Greenland or parts of Canada claimed under the Guano Islands Act of 1856.

Spoiler

Whenever any citizen of the United States discovers a deposit of guano on any island, rock, or key, not within the lawful jurisdiction of any other Government, and not occupied by the citizens of any other Government, and takes peaceable possession thereof, and occupies the same, such island, rock, or key may, at the discretion of the president, be considered as appertaining to the United States.

The New York Times will soberly discuss the relative quantities of useable bird guano in the disputed territory, we’ll hear from some condescending, self-appointed MAGA fertilizer experts, and we’ll be left debating if it’s the stupidest thing or just the stupidest thing so far.

True, he has not yet reached out to grab any new territory.  But there is a sizable Hungarian speaking population in Zakarpattia Oblast in western Ukraine that Orbán has agitated for before.  IF Russia were ever to dismantle Ukraine you can bet that Orbán would get his piece of the pie for his fealty to Putin.  He's just not in a position to do anything about at this time.
