It’s under-appreciated that this crew has an edgelord meme level understanding of the world.  Witkoff on Carlson banging on about how the Middle East has so much more potential than Europe as a partner but in the real world it’s not a race where they pull even in six lifetimes.

Europe needs a kick in the ass (and got one) but here’s reality: the Middle East has nothing of value outside of petro chemicals and doesn’t need special care to sell that to us, they can’t eat it.  The entire region with a slight exception for tiny Israel produces no innovation, no science, no culture appealing to anyone but them, nothing but angry young men desperate to get to…..Europe. And it will never do any of those things so long as it retains the stupid and backward mentality of its rulers, which we are desperate to reproduce here.

We are closer to turning into a failed and angry Middle East style sclerotic autocracy than the Middle East is to catchup up with Europe.

TLDR.  Let's translate it to simple MAGA-speak:

Authoritarian states good.  Democratically run states bad.  We want to hang out with the guys we like -- authoritarians.

Pete Hegseth accidentally sent the editor of The Atlantic the strike plans on the Houthis when he accidentally added him to a Signal group.  Gift article only works via Xitter, sorry.

The White House has confirmed that a journalist was inadvertently added to an unsecure group chat in which US national security officials planned a military strike in Yemen.

...

The National Security Council did not deny the Atlantic report.
Spokesman Brian Hughes told the BBC: "At this time, the message thread that was reported appears to be authentic. "We are reviewing how an inadvertent number was added to the chain.
"The thread is a demonstration of the deep and thoughtful policy co-ordination between senior officials."

1) Imagine stating that about.....ANY thread here on Surly.

2) Then....realize that statement 1) would be more accurate than the statement the admin just issued.

What an amazing timeline.

Also how tf does the cabinet not have its own E2EE chat server/service. It's 2025 holy fuck. There's 5 open source options.

All records of government activity conducted by government actors -- ALL OF THEM, EVERY FUCKING LAST ONE OF THEM -- are records of the United States government, and thus belong to the government and importantly, to "we the people."

These criminals (that's what they are, all of them - they were right when they said it about Hillary's emails, and that means I'm right when I say it about them) are attempting to circumvent that requirement, which is a violation of the law.

Laws for thee, not for me, exhibit infinity.

Or, and hear my out for a second, they just are a bunch of idiots who know signal is actually secure with E2EE and is convenient and easy.

I don't know that they are specifically doing this for any other reason than sheer stupidity and convenience. My point is that it should be extremely convenient for them to do this in a legal way and then we can go with your conspiracy theory of everything being maximum evil.

I'm relatively sure that it is convenient for them to do it in a legal way.  That doesn't allow you to add just any jackwagon from your contacts to the chat.

Brisket is right, the whole point is to not use government devices to do the people’s business, to avoid accountability and scrutiny. And yes— I was disgusted by Hilary doing the same thing (that’s why she did) and would not have voted for her if her opponent had not been a simple criminal.

There is no E2EE app secure enough to send the info Hegseth sent via a mobile device that is not 100 percent physically secured by a clearance holder at all times and that is not completely walled off from any other connection. But I’m sure DJT telepathically retroactively declassified it or some shit.

Signal the app may be secure but their devices certainly aren't cleared for classified communications. There's dedicated networks for that shit. Endpoints are extremely vulnerable.

They're doing it precisely because it's against the rules - it's an expression of their authority and power. Even moreso when nobody is fired or prosecuted because of this. It was like a couple weeks ago that gabbard was spouting off about LEAKERS!!!!ONE!!!

Lol back to back posts.

I agree with 956, which is why I think they used signal. I also agree with you twice that this is a solvable problem in 2025.

No, they aren't. They are doing it because people wanna use their god damned phones to send text messages instead of having to do whatever the fuck shit you are describing which is antiquated as fuck and inconvenient as shit.

Your first clause reveals that what I am saying is not a conspiracy theory, it's a fact.

There are ways to handle such communications.  All they have to do is ask any of literally hundreds of people inside the government "set me up a secure way to communicate with these people about this mission," and it will be done.  They didn't do so, precisely BECAUSE they want all of their communications - in a governmental capacity - to take place "outside of the government."

Which is -- say it with me -- a crime.

They are criminals.  It's not what they DO, it's what they ARE.  People who have complete contempt for the rule of law are the exact people who are.....CRIMINALS.

No dude, it doesn't work like this and you know it. It would take fucking forever to get this done and I'm sure it's not even really going to be nearly as easy or convenient.

They are not "people" any more.  They are officers of the US government, acting in that capacity.  If they are unwilling to do so, including following all the laws that entails, then they should GTFO of MY government.

Sorry that "governing is hard."  If you don't want to do it, then fucking quit.

False.  1000X, FALSE.  US gov't officials have had classified communications conducted properly in the cell-phone era a billion times.  No wheel needs to be re-invented here.  YES, it is LESS convenient than clicking open your personal device, opening an app, and sending all your buddies a picture of titties.  Tough.  Fucking.  Shit.  Having to be cleared for security clearance is LESS convenient than just "tell me all the shit."  But hell, we've dispensed with security clearances, too, so fuck it, why not.  Let's just dispense with OPSEC altogether.

I never said they were genius criminal masterminds.  I said they were criminals.  "Moron" and "criminal" are a MUCH more common pairing than "genius" and "criminal."

There is nothing at all convenient or easy about sending and receiving SCI shit and the whole reason to have a PC is to have the chats they did securely.

Look, all elected officials get squirrelly with classified shit cause they are busy and obstinate and too important. This is egregious and many times worse than Nuland’s leaked texts or Hilary’s server.

If you or I disclosed this level of national security information we would be on our way to El Salvador with fuckin black bags on our heads dude. This is an outrageous level of disclosure and ongoing illegal communication.

Fuck outta here with "it's too hard" bullshit. Give them a laptop with a SMART card and government SIM. Ease of use should not be a priority when the stakes are Airmen getting shot down on a mission because they wanted to send emojis instead of ASCII

I'm not defending what these fucking idiots did as right. I'm simply saying this isn't a conspiracy that they thought up to circumvent the law and shit. They are just fucking idiots who don't take anything seriously including their jobs, their positions in government, their responsibilities to the American people etc.

Being a fucking completely braindead moron is not a defense for being wrong or doing illegal shit. It's not defensible.

I'm simply saying they didn't do this in some plot to skirt the fucking law, they did it because they don't give a shit about the law and are just trying to text conveniently like a bunch of diphsits

Disagree. In this specific instance it was also dumb as fuck but the reason they have Signal on their phones and talk to each other there instead of the apps on their gov phones (even just about unclassified stuff) is to have a place where records laws don’t apply and a FOIA can’t reach.
