Eaton- Went from a small brush fire to this in just a few hours. Fucking hell, literally.

Oh yeah.  Saw it live on the local news from my home down in Irvine.  It suddenly blew up while all the focus had been on Pacific Palisades. Could see live the fire just run down the canyon like a river.   Feel for my co-workers in Altadena, La Cañada Flintridge, Sierra Madre, and Monrovia that thankfully got the hell out of there.  Hopefully not too late, winds forecasted to be significantly backing down by late morning tomorrow.

Fingers crossed, and ironically, no fires in Irvine west of the Santa Ana mountains.  Wind’s howling though.  The Airport fire back in September thankfully pretty much stayed up in the mountains near Rancho Santa Margarita.  Looked like Morder mount doom during the nights as it burned.

I’m very worried after seeing all of those cars abandoned in the middle of the road that you can’t get around.  I think I’m gonna be up tonight until he finally posts he is safe.

The fire department is clearing out those cars...with a D-8 dozer.  Seriously.  Shoving them off the road and piling them in a heap.

OK so we’re good.  At the Dena (old Sheraton) in Pasadena.  The whole hotel is full of Altadenaeans and their animals.  Shit is fucking crazy.  We’ve got 2 cats and a dog in our room. Cats are out of their minds.  Dog is tripping.  But we’re all safe.  I don’t think we’ll lose the house, but we might.  The winds are going to be hurricane force in a couple of hours.  Fire will explode.  Houses in Altadena are burning.  My nerves are fucking shot.  All you smell miles downwind in Pasadena is smoke.  This may end up being the worst fire event in SoCal history.  Fuck.  And the Bruins got smoked by Michigan at Pauley.  When it rains it pours.  Weird how surly can sometimes be my outlet.  You fuckers were the first (besides my wife) that I told I had cancer.  It’s like being on a couch.

Really happy you guys got out, and I can only imagine your nerves.

Fire is a general concern for me too, living in a windy and drier climate along a brushy ridgeline. I hope I never experience the same.

Um, Isn't Pasadena straight downwind from the Eaton Fire?  They probably have some nice hotels in Riverside. Don't sleep deep and keep the bags packed. Stay Safe.

they have 1, The Mission Inn.  And it's so fucking windy there, I'll be surprised if they don't get a fire of their own.  I just was up that way and it was blowing like a mofo.

Great to hear  @Sbbruin.  Stay safe!  It’s heartbreaking to see those houses going up in flames right off of New York drive.  Some of the embers “flying around” shown on the news look like the size of chunks of charcoal.

fucking palm fronds are incendiary devices.

So when does he and his arc showing up at your place?

Be safe @Sbbruin  Tell Ms. Bruin we are your sanity zone.

Went through both Bastrop fires. This event is insane in the membrane.

We're now at a friend's in La Crescenta, although they've already got their bags packed in case one pops up near this mountain. I think our house is likely safe from the fire unless an ember jumps multiple blocks of homes and catches us, or the entire area burns to the ground.

For Christmas my daughter was given a hand carved guardian angel that sits on her bookcase. It was one of the few things she grabbed on the way out 🥹

The shit that matters. Hug her and tuck her in. She sounds like a good one.

It would have to burn thousands of structures.  Maybe 10s of thousands.  We’re fine.  But fuck this shit.  I can’t sleep.

Are you able to get a sense of where the actual fire footprint is? I'm using the watch duty app and it makes it look like much of NE Pasadena, including PHS, are currently consumed by fire? All the way down to Orange Grove Blvd. Certainly that can't be right?

No.  It looks like the homes burning are along Altadena near New York.  And Kinneloa Mesa.  But the strongest winds are coming in a couple of hours and then it’s going to be a hellscape.

Serious question. Why doesn't LA County install some monitors along lines buried in the hillsides to use when shit like this happens. A whole lot easier to open a valve and wet down some fire breaks than chase the fire. If nothing else it could give firefighters some time to get in place.

https://www.nytimes.com/2025/01/08/us/california-fires-landmarks-pasadena-palisades-malibu.html?smid=url-share

The wildfires that continued to burn through Southern California early Wednesday have gutted some local landmarks along the Pacific Coast Highway and other areas.

Here are some of the most affected sites so far:

  • The Pasadena Jewish Temple and Center: The synagogue in Pasadena was engulfed by the Eaton fire, said Melissa Levy, its executive director, though the extent of the damage was unclear. That fire in Eaton Canyon, in the San Gabriel Mountains north of Pasadena, had consumed at least 1,000 acres as of Tuesday night.
  • Malibu Feed Bin: A local institution that has offered pet supplies and gifts since 1966 was destroyed in the Palisades fire, according to a post on social media. “With a heavy heart, I am writing this. We lost the Feed Bin today,” the post said.
  • Reel Inn: A well-known seafood restaurant in Malibu, Reel Inn posted a link on social media to a report in The Malibu Times, which said the restaurant had been destroyed in the Palisades fire. “We are so grateful for the 36 years we have been part of the community,” the restaurant’s owners said in the post, adding: “We are heartbroken and unsure what will be left.”
  • Palisades Charter High School: Flames overwhelmed the campus at the independent charter school in Pacific Palisades, according to Nick Melvoin, a trustee at the Los Angeles Unified School District. Mr. Melvoin said the school — a local landmark and the alma mater of numerous celebrities in show business, sports and the arts — was still closed for winter break, so there was no need to evacuate. Mr. Melvoin said that classrooms, bungalows, tennis courts and the baseball field had burned.

Damn, this is all so devastating. We took a family vacation in March of 2023 and stayed at a beautiful AirBnB house in Las Flores Canyon, just up the mountain from Duke’s on the PCH. It’s probably gone now. Ate at the Reel Inn mentioned above. Hope the Getty Villa survives.

@Sbbruin @Foosters @henrygandorf and anyone else in that area, good luck to you all and stay safe!

From last night:

A rapidly spreading wildfire in southern California reached the grounds of the Getty Villa museum north of Santa Monica on Tuesday, but officials said no structures had burned and the collection was safe.

The Pacific Palisades fire, fueled by a major windstorm and prompting mass evacuations in Los Angeles county, burned some trees and vegetation on site at the Getty Villa, but museum leaders said the galleries and archives were protected.

The Villa is located along the Pacific Coast Highway and is roughly 10 miles away from the affiliated Getty Center, the site of the main museum of the world-famous art institution.

The Getty Villa had “made extensive efforts to clear brush from the surrounding area as part of its fire mitigation efforts throughout the year”, Katherine E Fleming, president and CEO of the J Paul Getty Trust, said in a statement early Tuesday evening. While the blazes reached some of the vegetation on the property, “staff and the collection remain safe”, she said.

Fire prevention measures at the Villa include water storage on-site, with irrigation immediately deployed throughout the grounds on Tuesday morning, Fleming said, adding: “Museum galleries and library archives were sealed off from smoke by state-of-the-art air handling systems. The double-walled construction of the galleries also provides significant protection for the collections.”

Footage spread on social media showing some greenery ablaze near a Getty Villa sign, but the video appeared to be of the driveway entrance and a nearby building that is separate from the Villa.

@Sbbruin @Foosters Thoughts are with you more than you know right now. Wanted to pass along some insights from our experience through a multi-day Santa Ana driven fire down here in San Diego a few years ago.

a. Weird things happen in neighborhoods. Fire jumps around leaving some houses fine. Don’t give up hope.

b. Not that you need more things to worry about right now but if you are concerned about losing your house it’s been my experience that rentals are going to double and triple in the next few hours/days. I don’t know the areas you are in but it might be wise to spend a few minutes on trulia/zillow looking at rentals in suitable locations and find some possible spots you’d be able/willing to stay for a while. Repairs/rebuilding was a multi-year experience for many people down here. We had hundreds of homes lost which resulted in a lot more time than you would think to get insurance issues sorted plus contractors will be in short supply. Not trying to be a downer but just trying to share what we observed.
