If "Fired from Wendys" was on your resume, and that was the reason why, the interview might be over at that moment.  LOL.

and by over, I mean clarifying the details and start date.

Yeah I would hire him. Maybe put him on the French Fry section even.

It's just interesting that some comments are getting deleted while other off-topic tangents are not. I guess it's okay to argue about the policies (i.e., government rules, ergo "politics") of the California Coastal Commission, beachfront protection, seal walls, jetties, and sand erosion in a wildfire thread, but not okay to call out a dumbass bitching about the number of firefighters per square mile.

This is a really good piece about the emotional toll that people go through when they're among the few whose homes survive a wildfire. I highly recommend it for our LA brothers and sisters.

Understood, but he ain't the only one who's been trying to politicize this disaster for the past 3-4 days. I've said my piece about it and will move on.

sweet, as the earth cooled did the house fall in?

just googled the entire Lake Whitney shoreline and couldn't find that house

It's on the eastern shore of Lake Whitney, in White Bluff, north end of the subdivision. You can see the cliff front sticking up out of the water on Google Earth, and that house about 30 feet from the new cliff face.

Have an old friend from college, good dude, whose home in PP was one of the few that survived - it was upwind of where the fire started. That’s good…but everything else is shitty:
“Been a tough few days. Right now our house is still standing, which is amazing. No idea when we will get back in or if there is smoke damage or anything else. Word is we may not get back in for at least weeks and possibly months. Really suck but if that is all we have to worry about, we are good. So many of our friends have lost everything including one friend who lost his brother. It is horrific around here.”

Shit, that’s awful. No idea what happens when you pay off a mortgage since I’ve yet to do it (other than selling). How does insurance work? Coming in the first week of the year, I wonder if that timing could impact whether she had an active policy on the 8th.

You are free to buy as much or as little as you so choose after you’ve paid off your mortgage.

Yep. To make it Texas-centric, it’s maddening when - after every hurricane or similar event - people who lost everything in a flood cry “but we were told we didn’t NEED flood insurance!”
No, you were told that, because you are not in a high enough flood hazard area, your mortgage lender didn’t REQUIRE you to buy it…but you fucking dumbasses still live in an area where floods are possible (it’s Texas in 2025…unless you live at the top of a tall hill, that’s true), and you could have gotten insurance for a few hundred bucks a year.
Not paying for insurance is a great financial decision right up to the point that it changes into a disastrously foolish financial decisions.

if you’ve ever received oral sex from a hot Sami chick while lying on reindeer hides on the floor of her Lavvu - with the smell of dried salmon and trapped sable and mink furs permeating the air, you would strike it off your list too,

The individual seawalls that protect houses on cliffs and take the brunt of the wave force also work and protect the homes.

False. They work temporarily but they only increase erosion, increase the ferocity of the tide, and only result in greater destruction long-term. There are several studies about it and if you think you can just build a wall to stop the rising tide of the ocean, think again.

Why the fuck are people arguing about Galveston's seawall and jetties in a thread about active fires across the country?

Honestly I've wondered why he brught them up. I assume it's part of some conspiracy theory about how the gov't is going to prevent people from rebuilding but why it came up, I have zero idea.

I don't know jack about Galveston jetties but I do know that seawalls don't prevent erosion, they magnify the force of the ocean and create further erosion, and will eventually cause the elimination of the beach itself. You can see that from this picture. It's Malibu but not Topanga Beach. Seawalls -- and yes that's what they call those sandbags -- won't stop mother nature. Unlike in TX, access to the beaches are a public right in CA.

sorry to add another texas post, but look up texas open beach act.

every texan has a right to access all beaches in the state...  As far as i know there is only one private beach in texas and it traces its linage back the OG spanish land grants.

that said, there are forces at work to try change all this and allow the privation of beaches.   if a Texan is reading this, i highly suggest you contact your local rep and tell them how much you value our public beaches

Here’s the latest on the fires.
Firefighters racing against the arrival of more desert winds made progress on Sunday against the two biggest fires raging in Los Angeles, which have killed at least 16 people and destroyed entire neighborhoods from the inland hills to the Pacific Coast.

At least 16 other people have been reported missing in the area of the two largest fires, Sheriff Robert Luna of Los Angeles County said at a news conference, adding that he expected that number would “absolutely” rise.

Crews managed to contain more of the Eaton fire as of Sunday morning, and they had largely stopped the Palisades fire’s momentum toward a road of homes in a section of the Brentwood neighborhood.

Forecasters expected a brief reprieve from the wind on Sunday afternoon, but the kind of gusty desert winds that have propelled the fires were expected to return on Monday through Wednesday, keeping the fire risk in the area high.

Here’s what else to know:

Slow progress: Crews have contained 11 percent of the 23,700-acre Palisades fire and 27 percent of the 14,000-acre Eaton fire in the San Gabriel Mountains, according to Cal Fire. More than 100,000 residents are still under evacuation orders, and tens of thousands more have been warned they may have to evacuate.

High winds: The National Weather Service reported wind gusts between 30 and 40 miles per hour on Sunday morning in parts of Los Angeles and Ventura counties, combined with low humidity. Here’s the forecast.

Scale of destruction: The combined area burned by the past week’s fires is larger than each of the city limits of San Francisco, Pittsburgh, Boston or Miami. Together, the Eaton and Palisades fires have damaged more than 12,000 “structures,” which can refer to houses, but also cars and outbuildings.

The victims: The identities of more people who died in the blazes have been released. Read more about them.

Arrests: Robert Luna, the Los Angeles sheriff, said that 25 people were arrested in the area of the Eaton fire, and four near the Palisades. One man was dressed like a firefighter and had been burglarizing a home, he said.

I live next to a lake and a air guard base and they do a bunch of helicopter training with the buckets over the trail I take my daily walk on, and it’s really something when they fly over a person with a loaded bucket at low altitude

As did the GLO. Say what you want about Jerry Patterson, he believed in the GLO and its mission.

I’ll give him credit. I emailed him years ago about some land use I didn’t agree way out by big bend. He actually responded with a good email defending his point of view. I was surprised he did that and appreciated it

Was in a boat that flipped over at night as a tornado crossed the lake while fishing. Was tied up to a bridge and it snapped the ropes. After the ordeal and we were able to wade to the bridge embankment I realized I had, indeed, shit myself. I have PTSD with any wind over 40 now and living here that is basically constant in winter and spring.

No one should ever criticize anyone for their actions when facing an immediate catastrophe.

These pilots are incredible.

That 60 minutes piece had a cockpit view. I don't know if it was a DC-10, but that guy went full deflection left, full deflection right with the yoke just to keep it level. The thermals must be incredibly. Meanwhile the GPWS is screaming at him about altitude and terrain. They should be able to pull the circuit breaker for that distraction. I'm sure they know they're fucking close to the ground.

For the good of the community. Fuck these landlords. I am sure it is not all of them, but make examples of those that do. And judging by the asking rent, well the little dude is fucked.

Landlords ripping off LA fire victims, says Selling Sunset star

Oppenheim said his business, known for selling LA's most expensive and glamorous homes, was offering its services for free and had received dozens of calls from people who had lost homes.

Speaking on BBC One's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg programme, he described sending a client to visit a property where the landlord had previously been asking for $13,000 per month in rent.

"[My client] offered $20,000 a month and he offered to pay six months upfront and the landlord said 'I want $23,000'," he said.

California authorities have warned businesses against illegally hiking the price of items more than 10% above their pre-disaster cost.

On Saturday, California Attorney General Rob Bonta also said he had seen landlords raising prices illegally.

"You cannot do it. It is a crime punishable by up to a year in jail and fines," he said.

"This is California law [and] it's in place to protect those suffering from a tragedy."
