Southern CA Fires- Extreme Santa Ana Winds

Looting isn't a pimple-on-the-ass of "a problem" out here.  We've got 99 problems, and looting ain't one.

Without going into the social science of looting, the region is not out of the event yet. Looting tends to happen after the event. Society is still in flux, police are dead tired, and people start to get ansy/desperate.

So far I would say it is dickheads trying to commit regular theft. That ain't "looting"

I really hope I am wrong.

For the good of the community. Fuck these landlords. I am sure it is not all of them, but make examples of those that do. And judging by the asking rent, well the little dude is fucked.

Landlords ripping off LA fire victims, says Selling Sunset star

Oppenheim said his business, known for selling LA's most expensive and glamorous homes, was offering its services for free and had received dozens of calls from people who had lost homes.

Speaking on BBC One's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg programme, he described sending a client to visit a property where the landlord had previously been asking for $13,000 per month in rent.

"[My client] offered $20,000 a month and he offered to pay six months upfront and the landlord said 'I want $23,000'," he said.

California authorities have warned businesses against illegally hiking the price of items more than 10% above their pre-disaster cost.

On Saturday, California Attorney General Rob Bonta also said he had seen landlords raising prices illegally.

"You cannot do it. It is a crime punishable by up to a year in jail and fines," he said.

"This is California law [and] it's in place to protect those suffering from a tragedy."

It’s not just landlords.  I decided ten days ago to spend the 17th-20th in Newport Beach for my bday.  So I booked a nice suite at a nice resort.  Out of curiosity, I just checked to see what the rates are post LA burning down.  $1k more per night than the rate I booked 10 days ago.  I’ve been staying at this place at least once a year for the past decade and this is by far the most that I have ever seen for this property.

Sorry, but fuck that dumb woman. Why would you go into the house and say "We have a problem. You have to see this"? It wasn't a double rainbow or some other stupid shit. You run in and say "There's a fire headed our way, we need to pack up and leave ASAP!". Life isn't a sitcom, talk like a human being.

That’s not the way most people deal with stressful situations. Especially people that haven’t been in really bad shit. I’ve seen much worse than what she did.

That's a strange thing to fix on and in such a strong way. Does she remind you of someone?

Old UT roommate and friend going back to 1st grade sent me this back in July when Beryl hit the Texas coast. He was in Colorado and lost power at his house for quite a few days near the Galleria. He stayed in CO.

Out of curiosity I checked my Bonvoy app for LA rooms.  Nothing exorbitant IMO.

Right to the gallows.  We know two families whose house survived but they were robbed.  I was talking to a National Guardsman who wouldn’t let us up to our house who said they were guarding against looters and I told him he has my permission to shoot them in the head.  He laughed.  I didn’t.  Anyone who takes advantage of the most downtrodden should be removed from our society.

I am so damn fortunate to have such good friends.  My family is now settled into my dear friend’s parents house in Hancock Park that I grew up hanging in when I was just a boy.  They just moved his 93 year old dad out and were starting to prep it for sale, but my dear friend (I was his best man and we’ve been friends for I guess almost 50 years) insisted we move in and his siblings were equally adamant.  We don’t have a kitchen as they have it ripped up but who gives a shit.  Our animals are settled, we have a place to sleep, and we’re in a great place.  We may be weeks before we can go home.  And I had another lifelong friend and his wife who we love dearly bring us a bunch of clothes because we have just a few things.  We hav e it so much better than those who lost their homes that I feel guilty.  But my job is to take care of my family and my friends allowed me to do that.  And it’s kinda cool to be back in the hood I used to ride my bike around and see all my friends.  I had two other dear friends on this street when I was a kod.  Damn our family is exhausted from this.

It’s great to hear you’re settled and safe. Your description made me think of this song and adventures in the neighborhood back before social media. Entertaining ourselves with street ball, bikes, trampoline wars, skateboards and various minor injuries that were fixed with a bit of dirt.

That’s so funny. We built jumps to ride our bikes over.  I snapped my huffy in half doing it, and convinced my parents I needed a diamondback (when they were awesome).  It got stolen 4 days after I got it. LA is a serpent.  So enticing, and so hellish.  I’ve lived here my whole life.  I can’t quit her just yet. And probably never will.

Jumping a huffy on a shoddy plywood jump was a rite of passage. Eventually that plywood would give way and one guy would take a header into the stack of 2x4’s / bricks propping up the business end of that jump. Whether in LA or oklahoma, that’s how we all rolled.

I hope you can feel a bit of nostalgia in your friend’s parent’s place, and it gives you a sense of home and peace.

Last I heard there were 7,000+ structures in Altadena destroyed, and over 5,000in the Palisades.  It’s incomprehensible.  I’m shook.

Man, I have no idea how to comprehend this.  We had to deal with Harvey and what that did to our community but in comparison, it wasn't a hard effort for the community to bounce back.  Well, no, it was hard.  It wasn't THIS hard.  Even today, you can see the scars of Harvey but you can also pretend it never happened... the trees are still there, the landscape hasn't really changed.  Your will be different but your community will find a way to bounce back.  It may be hard to fathom now but it will happen.  Prayers to you, my friend.

Interesting. when I brought up potential looting early on I got the NO WAY, NEVER HERE from the audience.

I have lived in a few disasters. Always guard your shit if you can. If you can't, might not be there when you get back.

It wasn't just that you said it, it was that it was double-plus ungood oldthink.

Now that it has happened, it just proves you were bad. Possibly even horrible.

There is worse that I did. I kind of feel like I predicted it. Or maybe it was my internet belief that was the cosmic spark.

You really didn't but for some reason you have to make this thread about you. You also put in rioting in your post people like me took issue with but seem to leave that out every time.

I’m just broken.  I have it so much better than most.  But our community is lost.  And that is crushing.

I can't do much, maybe, but whenever you get settled you've got some free artwork* coming your way.

If you hate it, that's OK to say so too. I lived among the French. Just hand it off to people with worse taste until it finds a home.

*contains no depiction of fire bc fuck fire.

I would like to see the defense of the guy who dressed up like a fireman in order to loot some houses

”Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, who among us has not engaged in cosplay because of our admiration for the heroes defending our cities?  While my client is not a fireman, wearing the fireman outfit created a strong desire to see if fire was still smoldering in that home - and if so, could he put it out?    The large sack he was also caring was only his effort to bring a dignified burial to any deceased pet he ran across.

And for this, he has been arrested and is now on trial. I thought this was America?”

Let’s presume a person prepped as best they could.  Steel roof, steel siding, not a lotta bushes.

How much water would you need to stock in a bladder or cages tanks to save your house?  2000 gal do it?

Just put in a bunch of bird baths. They have a neverending supply of water.

Last night I pulled a Zillow search of rentals in my area and I stopped at 12 that all raised their rents 1500-2000 in the last 3 days.
