Why the methodists? I mean, I don't have an issue with them, just wondering why them specifically. What about the Amish?

REMINDER: Do not give a penny to Red Cross.

1. Donate directly to the PP UMC. The funds will be used to help people who lost their homes cover immediate expenses and for the church’s eventual reconstruction. http://www.palisadesmethodist.org/giving

2. Donate to the Los Angeles Fire Recovery Fund through the UMC California Pac Conference. These funds will benefit all the Los Angeles communities suffering in the fires. https://www.calpacumc.org

3. Donate to UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) for its disaster relief for all the California fires. https://umcmission.org/advance-project/901670/

4. Send donations of e-gift cards (amazon, target, grubhub. etc.) to palisadesmethodist@gmail.com. These will be given to community members who lost their homes and belongings.

Because UMCOR has been in existence for a very long time and has a great track record of disaster aid going directly to the people that need it with no "overhead."  We know people that have directly benefitted from it and there is no organization more transparent.  If you give to the Pacific Palisades Methodists, it will go directly to people in that community and not any nationwide organization.

Tell me about Red Cross

I read a long time ago that somewhere around 92 cents out of every dollar donated to the Red Cross never leaves the organization due to inefficiency and bloat.

That's why we give to Salvation Army. Much higher percentage of funds go to the programs for outreach, not overhead and bloated CEO salaries. If the Salvation Army is located in the area, they are a good place to give. And I can vouch for the regional Methodist and other faith based organizations overall. Most funds, in my experience, have gone directly to basic outreach needs. The ongoing cost of the organization/church is usually covered by parishioner giving over the year.

Sounds about right. Their president was paid over $800k for the year according to this: https://paddockpost.com/2024/03/24/executive-compensation-at-the-american-red-cross-2022/ and they have quite a few other executives making over $500k.

I've heard the same about March of Dimes, American (body part/disease) Societies having the same issue.

Hehehe, haiti.... Yeah, everyone else was great. UN, Clinton Foundation, Church Groups. Fucking spectacular.

I would say the international red cross is more effective than the American Red Cross. They are more community vs. national focused.

I'd roll Doctors without Borders for international.  The real green light moment for me was during the Indonesian Earth Quake when they basically said: We have enought money, send it somewhere else.  They caught a lot of shit for turning away donors, but that's just how they roll.

Also, they are the canary in the coal mine on international situations.  When they announce they are leaving or call for intervention you know its about to go down.  Their work in Rwanda in 94 is fucking legend.

With Societies, it depends on whether they are charity based or science focused.  A charity based society should either be funding research or charity efforts and most of that money should be going out the door.  A scientific society usually is a member based organization that also publishes/runs conferences to help cover the cost.  Doesn't mean the executives aren't well paid, but their primary mission is more internal focused than external.

There's a big difference between the American Chancer Society and the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

Fuck yeah. And usually they are there when shit is going down and rarely even then leave unless one of the belligerents tells them to. Check out their work in Sudan. Amazeballs.

All I was saying is there is a major difference between the American Red Cross and international red cross/red crescent.

This shit pisses me off to no end.  Some people are just lower than low.  We know a couple of people who have tried to apply for FEMA aid online, and they've gotten a response "there is already an application for this address".  Yep, scammers filing FEMA claims on addresses they find online.  Motherfuckers.  Both have gotten it straightened out over the phone, but fuck man.

Brutal.

So then authorities need to run sting operations on scammers, which of course some poor victims would get caught up in.  God people can really fucking suck sometimes.  lower than low, nails it.

fuck.

Angel (1984 film) - Wikipedia

1980's movies were pretty fucking wild.

I remember telling my friend’s mom in second grade I wanted to watch this movie and I repeated the catch phrase on the cover which I’d seen at the local pre-Blockbuster rental store.   I had no idea what it meant.  Did not go well.

Based on what I've seen on the internet, when you turned 18 your friend's mom reminded you of that movie incident and showed you what it meant in multiple different ways.

My wife's youngest sister is a bit white trashy and pulled this maneuver on her landlord after that last hurricane in Houston. Why are dumb people so clever with shit like this, and we nerds are looking up the definition of money laundering?

Not the same situation, but last year when I asked FEMA if they had any assistance for me after storm damage they asked me if I had insurance and I said yes.   They then told me that they couldn't assist and that they were only helping those without insurance.  I wasn't looking for much, but if they could have helped with my deductible it would have been nice.  Instead the funds went to people without insurance.   So that's what I get for being responsible.

You did the right thing. I know people on the gulf coast who were not damaged one bit, but filed BP claims none the less.

I can't speak to the Methodists but, again, based on experience with Harvey, despite what you may think of their beliefs, the LDS seemed to be doing great work on the ground helping people out after a disaster.

Yeah....I don't know anyone more efficient than the LDS helping out and directing funds locally.  If that so happens to be your bailiwick, specify your funds for fast offerings. They stay local and do not go back to HQ unlike tithes.

And fuck the red cross. Their percentages of monies used vs collected is uphauling.

I'm working on a project involving the Camp Fire and have seen documentation of insurance checks going out within days of homes being destroyed and in healthy amounts to get through immediate needs. My guess is that is what is expected here, setting aside that some insurance companies are better than others.

This is a fantastic video. Really highlights the actual physical difficulties of fighting fires in those wind conditions and how the winds dramatically increase the fire spread. Watch those hose streams and how the wind just breaks them up.

Basically the only thing that's changed is the look of the cars and how people dress ... and the increased number of homes and communities in the same area. Highly recommend.

KXAN in Austin has run a report that Austin is in just as much danger as Cali for fire. So, that’s great news for you Austin folks. :/

Yep. And the Small communities would be fucked with a massive fire out west.

There are so many air assets at any given time. They try to rotate them for seasons, but does not always work when lots of regions are in drought.

Well, we don't have the winds, but wildfire danger?  Sure, especially the west side and western suburbs.

Winds can come. Bastrop was not Santa Ana but it was blowing hard and it was enough. Don't think it takes almost Hurricane for this shit.
