Southern CA Fires- Extreme Santa Ana Winds

I wasn't looking for much, but if they could have helped with my deductible it would have been nice.  Instead the funds went to people without insurance.   So that's what I get for being responsible.

To be fair, you were the lucky one.  For Harvey, average insurance payout was $140K.  Average FEMA payout (no insurance) was $4K.  Your responsibility saved your ass.

Tell me about Red Cross

During the Wimberley floods, they literally considered other aid organizations to be their "competitors."

They were so worthless that they left Wimberley after 2 days.

Also, Google "Red Cross Haiti."

Why the methodists? I mean, I don't have an issue with them, just wondering why them specifically. What about the Amish?

I have several close friends who work for UMCOR, and that's just a copy-paste of ine of their fb posts.  "Anyone but RC" should be your main takeaway.

During WW2 my grandad (aircraft electrician w/ 9th AF) developed a loathing of the Red Cross. Something involving a girl they rescued from who knows what hell, and Red Cross basically treated her like shit.

Holy crap.  Note to self:  if you ever see a water or flame retardant air drop inbound, run.

Water weighs about 8lbs per gallon, and getting hit with even one 8lb unit moving at a hundred fifty knots would be awful. Now imagine a thousand units hitting you

You sound like the campers that set up their tents close to my Dad's house when the water balloon launchers came out... allegedly

I'm very grateful to still have a house, but man the aftermath is taking a toll. I dropped off 30+ shirts and 10 suits at the dry cleaners and wearing them today, i STILL smell like a campfire.

There's also a lot of concern in the area over the toxic ash that spread across the region from the thousands of homes, garages, and cars that burned. Although the AQI seems fine, that apparently doesn't account for all the toxic volatile compounds that have blanketed the area.

The smell lingers for a long time. Like years for shit packed away in closets. We threw all our linens, curtains, etc. out. For the short term stock up on this.

But glad you and the other posters are doing as well as possible.

And not to be a downer, but concerning all the clothes drop offs. Yeah, um, if you get any of the hand outs wash that shit industrial style. Lice.....

It takes about 3 days to get the smell off of me after work no matter how many times I shower. Working out a day or two after a fire it’s not uncommon to have the smell reappear.

There’s hundreds of chemicals released when man made materials burn. Whole bunch of shit that ends in -ene (carcinogenic), hydrogen cyanide, hydrogen sulfide, arsenic just to name the more recognizable. IDLH, PEL and STEL for quite a few of these chemicals is insanely low.

Would an Ozone machine help?

https://a.co/d/6pjeSWP

It might. There's a crew at my house right now doing a deep cleaning with HEPA vaccums and other shit designed for smoke damage. If smell still remains, then that might be our next move. Our garage is currently packed full of large trash bags with pillows, stuffed animals, lampshades, etc. There's a laundry place down the road that does Ozone cleaning for those types of items, so we'll be taking them there

Last Wednesday when I was at my house while shit was burning, a water dropping helo flew right over our house and did a drop one street up on a burning house.  It was a shitton of water.

Yeah I was gonna mention that earlier and forgot. Drops can be very hazardous to people on the ground, so there has to be a lot of coordination, making sure the drop areas are clear. Don't fuck around anywhere near the drop zone.

Also, just saw this update re: the PP fire.

Yep. Working in my early 20s in a print shop, we would speed up the cleaning by wrapping rags around our hands and just splashing around with those -enes.

That is pretty amazing. Hell I'd go for Green Day all alone. One of the best shows I've ever seen. Maybe the best.

I was just telling my kid that even if I just select the acts I'd like to see from that list, it would be an incredible lineup.

Green Day

Earth, Wind, and Fire

Dave Matthews & John Maher

Gwen Stefani

Chili Peppers

Stephen Stills

Stevie Nicks

I am not sure where to post this. We had a fire at our house 10 years ago. It just destroyed a detached patio. It was not the most traumatizing event, though in the moment it was terrifying since it was middle of the night and we had two kids younger than 3. Everyone ended up being fine.

I just had a Google photo "remember this!" Sent to me by my phone with photos of the aftermath and it made me realize how insane this generation of tech can be. Imagine having the most traumatizing event of your life (100mph wind driven fire that completely destroys your home and life),  you possibly survived unscathed or maybe you lost someone dear to you. You snap a photo of your homes remains. Spend 10 years in therapy dealing with it and then out of the blue, Google decides you need to see this memory.

I laughed my ass off at the pictures it sent tonight it is so macabre to me, but what a twisted tech world we have created.

Nah....just have to have the right aircrew(s).

A few pics from some training a few years back with some Texas Forest Service guys out at Camp Swift.

I expect LA firefighters to handle the incoming Santa Ana winds and dry conditions with ease for the next few years, because I was told this morning that the fires are merely 'a simple crisis' to handle.

So this screenshot my friend sent a little while ago has to be a mistake, right?

And Air BnB kicked in 60% of the cost for fire victims.

Pretty cool. I had a $1400 bill from Air BnB and $50 cleaning fee and $200 Air BnB fee plus taxes in a no sales tax state brought the total to $1800.

They are definitely going for some PR.  But delighted to be a recipient.  Even if insurance doesn’t cover it, it’s a small price to pay under the circumstances.  Although I’m going to hold the insurance company’s feet to the fire on all of it.

new fire down my way.  Intersection of I-15 and Highway 76.  About 80 acres right now, and the winds are expected to pickup this afternoon.   The GF's daughter runs a horse ranch just west of there...1200 acres and 200 or so horses, many of which are very valuable  race stock.    It's not her first rodeo...they lost about 200 acres of avocado trees the last time we had fires there.

Had a friend this summer who's brothers lake house was incinerated.  Wooden deck (extended, multi-layered) and an outdoor fire pit surrounded by those poly-wood chairs.  An ember hit one and it burned like greek fire.  Water did nothing.  Chairs lit the deck which lit the house.  Everyone was ok, but they lost it all.  Car keys, phones, laptops, all of it as most were asleep.  Cautionary tale about extinguishing your fire and where the fire is located.

When my dad’s regiment was shipping out to France in December 1945, the Red Cross was at the departure facility selling  coffee and donuts to his troops. He never patronized them after that.

Man that is rough. Bruin, I am going to suggest something that is hard for all of us.

Don't go to those sites. You know what happened. Check it as it impacts you if needed.

Focus on yours right now. Enjoy what is remaining. Focus on what IS still there.

Watch your mental health man. Recovery takes a toll on you for a long time if not careful.

Baseball season is right around the corner.

Wait, I guess the use of "obnoxious" was redundant there.

Sorry, Bruin, had to. You know we're thinking of you and want to help in any way we can. Up until Opening Day, of course.

This seems like good advice. I didn't lose anything other than a couple of paid for nights in a condo in Maui. But I was there and I watched the town burn down from a Jeep with my family, and witnessed some of the aftermath. It messed me up for a good year. It was all I could think about.
