Private firefighters? How would that work?

“Hey Chief! We just got a call from someone willing to pay top dollar! Should we start pulling the hoses and head over there?”

The Marcus Licinius Crassus FD is at your service . . . for the right price.

2 things: GF was on a work trip and was flying from JFK-LAX.  Pilots said it was too rough in LA to fly safely, so they diverted to Vegas.

As to the Getty, the grounds there are spectacular.  I prefer the outdoor space to the inside of the museum.  If it was damaged, that sucks.

I'm not kidding.

Damn. I really liked the Marmalade Cafe that’s right next door.

Why are they expanding the mandatory evacuation, are they expecting the Eaton fire to move west? They've had it contained decently well for the past few hours.

Getty has been smart over the years utilizing hundreds of goats from local ranchers to eat down all the surrounding vegetation around the perimeter of the park.  Why the hell can't the rest of the valleys look at something like this to keep all the dense underbrush better controlled?

First of all that sucks... but every cloud has its silver lining, a lot more boat time headed your way!  Well, unless those embers carry

I live just south of here it looks like it’s 5am outside. Ash is all over my cars.  I have 3 friends in the palisades. Their homes are gone. I swam and trained at Pali High. It’s gone.  The wind is wild

In my 20s, I hooked up with a 1982 playboy playmate in Hermosa. She was in her early 40s.

What a nightmare. EVen the structures that survive will have a ton of smoke damage. This is going to be bad for the insurance industry and we all will probably pay

Just a matter of time before this happens in central Texas. I’m amazed it hasn’t already

Hope you all make it out ok through this

Somethings are better left to the imagination and stuck in time.

She did tell me stories of orgies with Gene Simmons and others at the Mansion.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but is someone starting these fires on purpose? Or is this just trees hitting power lines type of accidental fire?

This is insane. Hope all yall stay safe out there.

Supposedly the Palisades fire started in someone's backyard. Not sure of the cause but I doubt it was intentional. The winds are more likely the culprit.

Stupid question. Can they pick up and use salt water from the Pacific to dump on the fires, or fresh water only?

I have little doubt it happened almost exactly like this

From our friend AI.

While technically ocean water can extinguish a fire, fire tankers generally do not use ocean water because the high salt content can severely damage the firefighting equipment, including pumps and hoses, due to corrosion, significantly reducing their effectiveness and lifespan; therefore, most firefighters avoid using seawater unless absolutely necessary and with proper maintenance procedures in place to mitigate the corrosive effects.

Short video of neighbors in Altadena spraying down house roof fighting to save home next door a house on fire.  LA and Riverside FD drive by, see the neighbors’ efforts, and take over.  Also, the reporter is blast from the Austin past Michelle Valles.

Jesus, cedar shingles.  Have fun with that.  We had them on our hunting cabin before we replaced with sheet metal.  We still have piles of them and they light on fire like they are soaked in kerosene.

Yes, the Canadian plane (CL-415) in picture was designed with corrosion resistent materials for salt water use.

Probably too soon, but I can't stop thinking about how fucked any property owner is for insurance in California.  This is unreal.

We are in Colorado, but all the same "concerns" for insurers here.  We were dropped by Geico earlier this year due to wildfire risk even without any wildfires affecting our direct area since we moved here 5 years ago.  The only overlap we have with areas that have been affected are "mountains" and "Colorado".  We were able to obtain other coverage, but I can imagine insurability is a problem that is only going to get worse for areas like California, Colorado and Florida.  These LA fires are going to cost insurance companies billions in claims.

I am happy to read that our known resident Californians are all safe.  I hope yall's homes are ok.

Looking like the fires jumped the PCH in Malibu and have burned down a bunch of the beach houses on the ocean side of the road. Reporter at Rambla Vista and it’s all gone.

Insurance as an industry is gonna get pantsed as climate change intensifies our already extreme weather. If the jet stream breaks down and doesn't contain the arctic air, we're gonna be getting significantly more dry and strong winds every year.

Combine that with a shoestring maintenance budget in the privatized public utilities, and baby, you've got a tinderbox ready to go
