It was so bad that I thought I drank too much and couldn’t read the game clock or that the sound wasn’t synched correctly.

There was also that weird comment about ND already being in field goal range when the ball was on the 40 or 45 on that final possession.
I mean, a 58-63 yard field goals are attempted…. Just not usually in the college game and not usually with like a minute left.

Yeah, he said that right when ND took the field after the INT about already being in field goal range.

Justin Tucker or Cameron Dicker ain't suiting up to make that kick, Greg.

The way Penn State lost looked so familiar. They looked like they had the better athletes. Defense looked more physical. QB just missed too many throws and allowed ND to hang around.

PSU WRs were completely out-matched by ND secondary. Allar definitely missed too many throws, but those guys were really bad and part of the reason. It was fitting the WR got manhandled by the DB on the final int.

And PSU was running fairly well, but Franklin started passing the ball... because.. ? At least that's what I recall.

Franklin did a similar thing against Boise. Kept it closer than it had to be. Should have run them out of the building. 2 fumbles by NFL first round draft pick Allar didn't help though. If my recollection is hazy I'm sure I'll be corrected.

PSU threw too much in the second half.

140 yards rushing in the first half. Just 64 in the second. I think they could have run on them all night, and on most people all season. It’s amazing how they left it to Allar to lead things. Makes no sense. Just stupid.

Just another example of a coach going away from what is working. Penn State could have worn down ND completely in the 2nd half. ND was undersized on defense up front.

But I guess once ND tied it by scoring 10 straight, Franklin panicked?

Psu getting that first down on their final real possession was the worst thing that coulda happened, gave them reason to push it. Go into OT with your grinding offense and Brock bowers junior, if you go into triple ot just run him power for every two point try.

There's a reason Franklin is 1-15 against top 5 teams. It's not going to change. He blew two leads last night and will never be able to win meaningful games.

Franklin is tailor made for covering against the Purdues and creating booster happiness.  Competing against like athletes?  Forget it.

He should be the next coach at aggie. I am sure they would champion his raison de vivre

I don't think it was panic because the same thing happened with a bigger lead against Boise. If Franklin keeps running in that game PSU may have won by 4 TDs. Use more clock and wear Boises small D down more. So it was essentially a mirror of ND. It's just bad "over thinking" head coaching and if I'm honest I'm of the opinion Sark does it some to, just not to near the same bone headed level as Franklin.

Edit  - It reminds me more of FUPM reaction to big games. Have a lead, x is working but y helps protect the lead and I'm smart. I'll do that!

More worried about losing and looking dumb than taking what is given and working.

A little surprised by so many “neither of these teams can compete with UT or tOSU.”  Sure, they could get blown out 41-14.  But, it’s silly to act like teams that run the ball and play defense can’t possibly grind out a low scoring win.

I'm in the minority in that I think NDs defensive package could cause issues for our offense. I think Texas would have matched up better with PSU. Neither of them matches up well against Ohio State. Football is about match ups. OSU and Texas match up pretty well against ND and better against PSU.

So that and throwing on the burnt orange glasses = blow out

But I'm a raging pussy so..

PSU offense doesn't attack space very well and plays into the strength of ND defense.

He also suggested that, if Notre Dame broke a play loose with nothing but endzone in front of them, they should kneel at the 2. So dumb. The statistics probably don't back this up, but I'm still trusting my defense to stop an ass quarterback from putting together a 75 yard touchdown drive in 20 seconds more than I'd trust 99.9% of college kickers/kick teams to make essentially an extra point for the win in that moment.

But his arm strength! He can hit the EZ from their own 40!

PSU would have had to run a 3 TE, 2 RB offense and spread them all out to go deep. Because WRs couldn’t catch a cold

That's true. I didn't watch a ton of that Penn St/Boise St game after the 1st half. But if he did it again, then yeah, just not very bright situationally. I have no idea how PSU's QB is considered some great NFL prospect. I heard one of the announcers say he has all the tools NFL scouts want. Huh? I saw a QB who could only check the ball down to #44 and the RBs. Zero completions to a WR. Bad things happened when they let him pass the ball down the field but he got bailed out by weak PI's that should have been interceptions. No idea why Franklin let him sling it down field on that last drive that sealed the game for ND. That was a horrendous pass and decision. Keep checking the ball down and seeing what you can gain. If nothing, go to OT.

As we’ve seen, at some point during the game, just about any defense package can cause the Texas offense issues.

Yeah I’d definitely take the touchdown. Fuck playing for a fg. You get beat doing that.

Georgia too.  Georgia got the ball back after a touchback at their own 25 with 39 seconds until half.  Last night, PSU got it at their own 15 with 47 seconds left in the game.

Both games could have been different if the opposing coaches realized their offense/qb had little chance of driving against a good ND secondary with so little time left and that a TO and allowing points was more likely than scoring points.  There's nothing wrong with taking a knee and killing the clock.

Think Abdul Carter got held on every play.

Toward the end of the game, ND had him double teamed and on one play he got held around the neck by one OL and the other grabbed his facemask.  No flag of course.  He looks like a Micah Parsons clone.  The best way to keep him from the qb is to hold him on most plays.

I saw this, too. But this offset the terrible PI calls Penn St benefitted from that should have been turnovers in the endzone. Penn St scored TDs after these calls.

That last one, one of the Notre Dame dbs ran in to the receiver and never turned around for the ball.  That's going to get called for a PI 9 times out of 10.

He barely grazed the WR, who was fading backwards as he jumped. Ball was well underthrown and he receiver was tailing away from the ball. I thought in college, you don't have to look back and play the ball like the NFL? Could be wrong. Getting bailed out for poorly thrown balls is weak.

Glad Notre Dame ended up winning, though so those calls didn't matter in the end.

Turning around for the ball is not required in college. You can face guard.  You just cannot impede the receiver.

They say it all the fucking time though, " He didn't look for the ball..."

It doesn't fucking matter where the defender is looking in college.

No he didn't. It just looked like the DB ran into the receiver because the receiver was falling away from the ball. There was very minimal contact. That was a horrible call.

Doesn't make a shit that he didn't look.  He didn't make contact that affected the receiver.  So, there's that.

I thought the first call was legit and absolutely affected the route and the play overall.

2nd call was horse shit.

First one was not one I'd spend energy arguing over with the refs or a PSU fan.  Perhaps that ass QB saw the flag being thrown and knew he had a free shot.  It was a fucking terrible and under-thrown ball which is why it was picked so easy.

Except that Russell was mobile, fast and could move. Allar is just a Hackenburg wannabe. The fascination and gravitation toward him is really bizarre.

I looked up his season numbers this morning (3300y, 67%, 24-8) and was just shocked because every time I've seen him play, he just sucks.

I guess I've only watched him against good teams.

He barely breathed on the guy.  That is NEVER called in today's game.  And it had absolutely no impact on the play.  The only real contact was with the arm and that was pretty incidental.  That should have been a TO and no Penn St. TD.
