We were about to tie the game with 3 minutes left until Sark called arguably the worst play call in Texas football history and one of the worst plays ever called in the postseason of college football by any team. Ohio State was beatable and we were right there.  Texas is every bit as good as this Ohio State team. It’s a shame our head coach choked in the most magnificent way possible in the worst possible moment.

And yet the play call for Blue’s second touchdown was absolutely perfect. Sark was overthinking

Don’t feed the troll guys. You know with 3 min left this dude was ripping bong hits of meth with bubble guts and now he wants to come on here big and bad. As far as the last sequence I would’ve preferred getting a RB out in the flat with some routes over the top to give ewers different options but oh well we will be back next season.

You’re wrong here. Quinn is absolutely part of our running problems. He’s not a threat to keep it and run and he can’t hit deep balls so safeties can play in the box more. His deficiencies lead to 1-2 extra defenders who can make a stop in the run game on every play. Our OL, especially interior OL needs to improve, but Quinn is absolutely part of the problem with our run game.

I hope you’re right, but we’ve seen way too many OL whiffs and ridged play calling decisions, situational awareness stupidity for me to believe it’s mostly Quinn. Again, I hope you’re right.

Woke up this morning, went for a run, worked out, ate some breakfast, then sat down and started thinking about that last shit-ass goal line series one more time.  GD it that sucked.

Now I have to finish taking down the rest of the Christmas decorations that I've been stalling on, and I was looking forward to watching some playoff football while doing so, but I no longer have any desire to watch any football at all, because football is dead to me.

For now.

That’s probably Quinn more than Sark

Yeah, I think you're right. Dude had "his guys" that he looked for, rather than trying to find an open man. Wingo was open a ton of times, and it pissed me off.

However, Arch gets to throw ro Wingo, Ffrench, Lockett (who's a fucking freak(, Moore, Jordan Washington, hopefully Amamri Niblack and Aaron Butler (whom the staff absolutely loves).

That was my initial reaction, but after thinking about it I want Ohio State to win. I want it to feel very clear that we lost the NC in this game, for Sark's sake. He needs to adapt on game day.

Also I want our revenge victory in Game 1 next year to be against the defending national champs.

I think Sark's offense is catered more to Arch's strengths rather than Quinn's. But Arch wasn't ready yet, and you don't have a QB competition with a guy who is winning (regardless of their faults ). Sark made the right call and we went 25-5 in the last 2 years.

I can't wait to see what Arch can do (his deep throws are money, and he can escape the pocket (.

I haven't seen it discussed. Kick the gotdamn field goal on 4th down it's 21-17. We had 2 timeouts plus the 2:00 stop.

Our coaches provided ample brainfarts last night.  4 plays decided the game, dingblangit.

1) the screen 75 yard TD

2) the qb keeper on 4th for a 20 yard run when it was 14-14

3) 2nd down at the 1 (this could be expanded to all 4 plays from 1st and goal at the one if you want)

4) scoop and score.

That's it. We'll be back bitches. Circle that first game next year cause we comin.

I think the odds of making that stop and scoring again are lower than making the 4th and 7.

if you don't make it, normally you have the chance to stop them anyway if your line doesn't give up a sack fumble

Starting with sark

Yeah Gerry Hamilton raised a good point that they have the two best safeties as far as coming downhill to stop outside runs and they didn't really have pass assignments on that play.  The play call was doomed to fail as a concept let alone execution.  A halfback pass had a better chance to score than that play.

Yep. We have equal talent. Howard waa sacked 3 times, threw an INT, not a singke WR  had a 100 yard game. Jeremiah Smith went 1-3, Egbuka  6-51. Our secondary is elite. Our defense sis elite. They thought they could come in and dominate us like they did Tennessee and Oregon and got a lesson on what playing a real tea n kooks like.

When I heard about Baxter's injury, I wondered way back then if that had cost us a championship.  Then the injuries kept coming.  And we still got this close to winning the SEC (in spite of a lot of fuckery) and a national championship game.

This team overcame a lot this year.  And a lot of them will be back.

Next year, we take the next steps.

There are 12 teams in the playoff. Eleven of them are destined to lose.

We had our chances last night, but Ohio St. made a few more key plays. It happens. Still a good year overall.

Props to Sark for making it this far. Thanks to the team, including Quinn. He may not have been everything we hoped for, but he was still pretty good.

That game was a heartbreaker like any ... could have been a classic. These Longhorns gave us two straight years of meaningful post-season games after a decade of shitty bowl games. Here is to 2025 being another awesome year of Texas football! Hook'em Horns \m/

I just hate that the 4th down play was a scoop and score. If it was just a sack, there was at least a chance to force a 3 and out and get one more hurried drive. The score is what the score is, but those two teams were much more evenly matched than a two TD spread.

I was watching the game last night with a neutral party from out of the country.  Multiple times during the game he said “It is hard not to notice how much more attractive the Texas fans are than the Ohio fans”.  It is truly amazing how the entire Ohio St. fan base were obese pigs.  So enjoy the win and the diabetes!

He’s done it a few times lately and I kept waiting for it to be called. He thought he could get away with it after not being called on it in previous games and it finally was at the worst time.

Yeah, I thought Helm might get flagged for it in a recent game (either Clemson or ASU, can't recall which) when he basically did the exact same thing, and remember thinking to myself at the time that we were lucky they didn't call him on it.  Then he does it last night & I knew instantly they were going to flag him for it because he was pointing right at the OSU player instead of generically signaling first down.

You can't point in the direction of the opponent after making a play.  Our players should know this & the coaching staff should have drilled that into every player.  It might be a stupid rule, but it's the rule, so they've got to follow it.  Fortunately, the offense was able to overcome it.  Too bad the O couldn't overcome Sark's playcalling when we were GTG and Cam Williams' pass pro on 4th down.

I never said it was mostly Quinn, but he absolutely contributes to it. Arch is a run threat and can hit the deep ball. It’ll be interesting to see how much he helps our running game. And we’ll need it since we will have 4-5 new starters on the OL next year.

I'm not a football expert but this is what I saw last night.  Section 454.

First, walking to our section I saw our fearless leader, glasses, beard and all walking the other way.  I'm sure I mouthed "that's Immamac."  I'm guessing that was around section 452 at 6:10.  Thanks dude - 2024 was a good year.  I'm sorry I missed the tailgate but I was a last-minute decision.  Thanks for setting everything up all year - I'm sure you worked hard and I appreciate it.

Second, I usually don't like the sign language thing interpreting.  I know, it's for the hearing impaired and I should be tolerant, but it distracts me.  I don't care for it.  However, Kilgore Rangerette girl last night nailed it during the National Anthem.  I've never seen it done better and I'm proud to be a Texan.

Third, I think the OHIO script, dot the I maneuver is more impressive on TV than in person.  Sorry bro, your schtick ain't that special.

Now, to the game.

It seemed to me in the first half like Quinn would look at his first option/receiver, and if he didn't like what he saw, he would just lean into the pile.  First time I saw it I was unimpressed but I think it happened 2-4 times.  Only logical conclusion I can reach is that he was coached to do that.  I don't buy the "Quinn is soft" narrative.  Consider that it is at least possible he was told "we have an awesome defense, we have a ton of playmakers, we're good at special teams.  If you don't like what you see, no hero ball - you're not Michael Vick."  And, I'm not sure I take issue with that - Home game, good defense, Quinn just came off of OT 4th and 13.  It may have been good coaching to say "nice job being a hero, now forget that shit and be a game manager."  There was one play where I think Quinn could have taken off but he just sort of laid down.

Contrasting that with the second half, there were some late passes to check-downs and more risks taken.  I don't blame Quinn.  I think he was a good soldier - he was told to take care of the ball and he took care of the ball for 58 minutes.  Two turnovers in last 2 minutes and I don't blame him for either.

Bond was a waste.  I wish we had made the decision on day 1 that our 1, 2, 3 and 4 were Golden, Wingo, Helm, Wisner and Blue.  If not them, Moore and Bolden.  Kinda seems to me like 95% of Bond's reps/targets were wasted.  Last night, on the biggest stage, he dropped a gimme.  Now, Ohio State dropped a touchdown in the first half, and the qb tripped over flat turf in the second half, so I get that they're not perfect.  But for the $$ Bond was paid, catch the damned ball.

How does a screen go for 80 yards?  Where were the safeties?  WTF?

We had the momentum in the 3rd quarter. At least it felt that way to me.

1st half we had a pitch/toss/sweep/reverse something to Wingo.  Where did that play go?  Seems like we only ran it once each game and I think that play can go both ways, or be a fake for a pass.  If you're only going to run it once (and it gained positive yards), why do it at all?

Our ability, or inability to run - I don't put that on Wisner, Blue, Gibson.  I've seen OU, ASU and some other schools with some tiny ass RB's make holes that those guys could run through, and make schemes that kept the linebackers and safeties distracted.  I don't know exactly how to coach up a running game but I think it starts with some big strong mf'er pushes another one to the side to make a gap, and then the guy goes through the hole.  Our line wasn't creating holes for the RB's.  If your guys need help, scheme so they get help.  Our line wasn't making big holes and wasn't pushing anyone around.  I would be curious to see the ratio our line had of 10 yard runs to false starts.  Maybe our line had individual talent, but as a unit, they weren't making it happen.

Either we get held more than anyone else in CFB, or our d-line underachieved.  It seemed like they had a chance for a sack on at least 50% of the plays they were in and rarely got there.  Maybe I'm wrong but we should have killed that qb last night.

Defensive backs did their job.  Take away that screen for however long it was and they gave up 0 receiving touchdowns and had 1 INT.

The call on Helm for taunting was absolute bullshit.  I don't think it mattered because we got 1st down at the 1, but what in the hell?  Game on the line, guy makes a giant play, you let that go.  Remember, you're in the entertainment business.  it isn't pro wrestling but still, people want to cheer for their gladiators and if you turn them into bland robots, less cheering.

If I had to sum up the season I would say this, great 1st year in the new conference.  Forget all the "you can't compete - this aint the big 12," crap.  We're #1 or #2 in this conference, right where we belong, and when teams see us on their schedule, they know it's a likely L.  Disappointing because it felt like we were so close last year, with a little better team this year we could win it all.  Probably we were closer to winning it all last year than we were this year.  And, last year, we were in the same place, semifinal game late, chances to score but couldn't get it done.

But, if you told me I could trade places with another program - even swap, coaches, players, recruits, conferences, facilities, whatever, I would say "nope.  we got all we want."

Now, Sark, Arch, Wingo, time to level up - we want a championship.

tldr - I'm salty about last night but I understand and accept it, I'm still a happy Longhorn fan.

For a moment I thought it was a halfback pass, that Wisner might even throw a pass back to Ewers, like the "Philadelphia Special" play in that Super Bowl.

Plays like that had no chance, it wasn't the blocking, especially bringing in D-linemen to block on that side. OSU knew the play was going to that side and had Texas outmanned and they swarmed it, even after Wisner avoided the first tackle.

A straight pitch play seven yards behind the line of scrimmage to the short side of the field. You could look at the defense OSU was in and tell that wasn't going to work. If you couldn't audible out of it, as bad as it would be to do, you have to call time out and change that play.

You put it perfectly…the O-line has good individual talent but lacks cohesion as a unit. While other teams with mash units have performed better. Flood needs to get his shit together too.

When will people realize that Bond was hurt in the OU game with a high ankle sprain and never allowed to heal? That he was the leading receiver on the team till that injury. That he was the leading receiver for Alabama the year before and saved their season by making a good catch on a fourth and goal from the 30-yard line against Auburn that put them in the 4 team CFP.

Bond was the deep threat for Texas with elite speed second only to Worthy. He should have been set down and allowed to heal and he would have been that deep threat and leading receiver again. He was only a decoy after the injury for the most part. Yes, he dropped a pass, so did others. He hasn't played that much since the injury, missing two games and no receptions against Vandy and Aggy in games he did. This was a waste. Saying a top receiver, you got in the portal from a top program, where he was the top receiver there, then he is your top receiver till an injury shouldn't have started is dumb.

When Bond gets healthy, he is going to run a lightning fast forty for NFL scouts and be a high draft choice because he was a proven top receiver before the injury. The negative talk about Bond sounds the same as was said about Worthy, when he had a hand injury. Look where he is today. Bond will follow, plenty of NFL teams will be glad to have him.

And Sark took away snaps from Wingo and even Bolden to use Bond as a “decoy”. High ankle sprains linger for a long while. Agreed that he needed extended rest.

Just my 2 cents to throw into the void and hopefully never think about this game again:

Sark blew our chances with that call. Absolutely. The offense pissed down its leg for an entire half once again, this defense carried the team all fucking night. Until..... 2 plays. The fucking screen, and the fucking 2-yard 4th down conversion. The pitch left will always be remembered by fans, but I'm not sure I'll ever forget 4th and 2 and Pete rolling with ONE defensive tackle, and WIDE OPEN A gap at the C/RG  and only Morice Blackwell to protect it against a C, G and 230-lb Will Howard for about 10 yards of space.

I have rarely seen that (NASCAR?) package all season, and as they trotted it out my head starting spinning immediately before the ball was snapped. You go three linemen when they only need 2 yards, and only one DT. From my vantage point in the corner of that endzone, the gap next to Broughton was fucking humongous, I couldn't believe it as the play started. Obviously they converted easily and should have had a touchdown. Maybe one of you knowledgable posters will do a deep dive and make me feel stupid for not understanding the package and intent, but at 4th and 2 I don't understand why you're not crowding the line of scrimmage and daring them to beat you deep. Give up a safety and go cover 1, but why tf would you not sell out on run and press the WRs? Take your chances with Howard beating you deep with pressure in his face. I just didn't understand it. Simmons was 1-on-1 with a guard and completely useless, Blackwell go swallowed up (Gbenda wasn't having enough of a game to be in I guess), Chip Kelly must have been salivating when he saw it.

Obviously the toss is 10/10 on the WTF scale, but Pete's call there is 9/10. It came at an absolutely crucial time as we had all the momentum in the 2nd half and that's a fucking back-breaker if we stop them on 4th down there and FINALLY take the lead.

To piggyback on that one, the defense was all chirping at each other and making hand signals for about 5 seconds before the play. They looked confused when watching it on TV but then I thought they'd stop and have it worked it out and have gotten the scheme right.

Instead it continued right up to the snap and then we saw what happened.

I haven't read through the threads or much of any post-game coverage, but for a defense that always seemed prepared, that was odd.

It especially sucked given during the timeout before that play my 17 year old standing next to me says "this is going to be a Will Howard run right here"

Yeah, hell I forgot the timeout before the play. That there was still apparent confusion or something is even weirder.

It was.

The next play wouldve gone for a TD if we were 15 yards closer.
