Oh, and your TV is too high

You're doing it wrong. I stand in front of the big screen to get the full immersion effect, like being at the game.

In '05, I jumped out of my chair and almost knocked the ceiling fan down (it was off). I can't get that height from a standing start.

Great perspective on what the sport in general means and what it means to be a fan. For me, it was special because for the first time ever, my girls were pumped for any kind of football, and specifically, the Horns.  We didn’t make a game this year, but they’re excited to in the future.

My youngest, 9 years old, said it best after the first Georgia game. Falling asleep, she asked if the Horns won, and I told her no. She said: “that’s okay, Dad, they’re still a great team and I’m happy for you.”

So yeah, it sucks but the ride was damn exhilarating.  I’ll have to go home and explain the loss to them this afternoon and I’ll be sad that we won’t have this feeling for another 8 months.

Also, thanks to you @immamac  and the rest of the (official) Surly crew for this site now and always

Great post. My kids are in their 30's. I took them to see VY in High School. Watching the Rose Bowl changed their perception of me.  My hollering and screaming at a TV, jumping around, scared and unerved them, like "Who is this crazy person and what did he do to my dad, the usually float through life Mr. yoga type person?"

They realized how it affected, and how important it was for me, in the moment. The don't completely understand it, but they have come to embrace it over the years. This year was the first time we all went to an OU game, saw me drunk on the streets Friday night, and not the designated driver. First time they saw Texas play as the Number 1 team. Oh, yeah!!!

Still making memories with my grown kids.

Time of your life, kid!!!

I wish Texas had won, but damn this season just seemed way too long.  They need to shorten the playoffs.

User name checks out.

When you measure some of the best parts of your life a song at a time, I guess the season is kinda long.

Sir, there is good talent and bad talent and then midwestern talent. Either way someone needs to report on it.

Michigan kicked ass. Changed my perspective on the midwest talent.

I've been wanting to go to Ann Arbor since high school. I'm in my 60's now, flew solo and stayed up there for a week.

I'm harmless, and my Texas gear drew 'em like flies. They loved my accent. They let me hold their hands while I showed them the proper way to Hook 'em, so they could do it wrong correctly. They were tee'd up and ready.

Had one gal ready to go trade shirts, until she said it rather loud. Her boyfriend/husband started walking up and I disengaged.

Surly 10's?

I'm older and wiser and have more insurance. I don't fish anymore, I hunt occasionally. I could wait for a double drop tine Muy Grande, or take the trophy 8's and 10's we see every year. As my friend Jill told me many years ago, "I'm not looking for Mr. Right. I'm looking for Mr. Right now."

About that midwestern talent that was tee'd up and ready?

It's Surly, not Chinatown, Jack.

That scene we have all watched, where the dad is standing there, arms crossed, while his son stands next to him crying because his team is losing...

That was us in New Orleans last January.  That was us last night except he held in the tears and just had the red eyes/quiet demeanor.  He's growing up.

I told my son on the walk back to the car last night that the trophy for us was spending a day together, cheering on our team, having something in common we can talk about, and winning would have just been extra.

He was not appeased by that talk, but then...

Some 50-year-old coog wearing a burnt orange short skirt started talking shit to some OSU fan who mouthed back.  Then she started yelling "Michigan, Michigan."  Then, she started singing the damned Michigan fight song (I never considered that it actually had words).  She wanted all the smoke from that dude and would have stabbed him with her skank high heel if she could have.

We laughed and laughed and, from now until the grave, my son and I are Longhorn fans.  I told him "that is not the kinda girl you bring home to Mom," and he said "maybe just once."  Heh, heh.

The Longhorns for us are pride, familiarity and entertainment.  They're the way we spend our fall Saturdays, the colors we wear near and far.  Part of my DNA and now, part of my son's.  Hook 'em.

Oh, and to the coog with the skirt singing the Michigan fight song - thank you.

Other than the weird seeding and automatic byes, I think the playoff format is okay. They need to get rid of all the CCGs and that shortens the season by a game.  A lot of times it's just the same two teams meeting again, and there's more downsides than upsides.  Just crown a conference champion by conference record, overall record, and whatever other tiebreakers you want to throw in.

Will never happen, too much $$$ in those games.

I’m sad the season is over, man. It was a great one, that will leave so many lasting memories. It’s gonna be a long wait until next football season. I care too much, as I’m sure many do here, and having that next game to look forward to when we’re good like we were this year makes me a much happier person.

I will miss this year’s team. Many important players played their last game as a Horn yesterday. Man, today is rough.

I’m not sad. I’m exhausted. And I’m just a fan. Four unscheduled games and damn near a fifth. They’ll never admit it, but I bet the team and coaches were getting worn down too.

The Georgia QB actually said he didn't want to play the CCG.  He only got to play half of it.

Make Notre Dame play the best team not in a CCG that week because fuck them.

Lament how the season ended for the players. I know nobody is more disappointed than the men who wear the uniform. 16 games, 13-3 holy shit

But incredibly thankful for..

  1. Kelvin Banks Jr excellence from day one and capping his career off with the Outland and the Lombardi Award.
  2. Back to back Outland winners at Texas!
  3. Jahdae Barron continued improvement and coming back in 2024 for the Thorpe
  4. Wisner's emergence when the team needed him, 1000 yard rusher
  5. beating Michigan in the big house with Wingo's 55 yard run, Helm's breakout with 7 catches and a TD.
  6. Being introduced to Arch Manning with almost 300 yards and 5 TDs against UTSA, including Ryan Wingo's 75 yard touchdown catch.
  7. Collin Simmons freshman All-American
  8. Anthony Hill
  9. Mukuba coming home
  10. McDonald looking ready to break out as a difference maker in 2025
  11. Lefau looking ready to break out as a difference maker in 2025
  12. the entire defensive line unit and coach Baker
  13. Sweep of rivals
  14. Golden 160 yard receiving against Georgia
  15. Silas Bolden 75 yard punt return touchdown
  16. Back-to-back final four, CFP semi-finals
  17. all those players who will not wear burnt orange again, among many other things..
