WWE Semifinals

Ohio State won the pro wrestling match held last night. Unfortunately, the Longhorns thought they were supposed to be playing Football.

Watch what people do, not what they say. Ryan Day clearly believed he had an inferior football team and turned the game into a wrestling match. The zebras helped him do it.

The guards masquerading as OTs were severely overmatched in pass protection. Even just allowing blatant holding favors the weak blockers. That assumes it was called evenly, which it most certainly was not. There wasn’t just holding  I saw full body locks on pass rushers that were completely past the OL.

Day didn’t believe his secondary could cover even a badly depleted Texas WR corps. His DBs clearly had instructions to grab, hold and tackle in coverage rather than play defense. You can see it from the opening drive, when the corner just grabs Golden’s arm and holds it down. Golden makes the one handed grab anyway but the Horns could not replicate that often enough. Watching that travesty, it’s clear why the only 2 Texas TDs came on plays where the RB wheel route was so wide open that no OSU defender could get close enough to grab or tackle before the ball arrived.

Even the Suckeye DL got in on the action. Several times, they openly grabbed a combo blocker to keep him from moving up to the second level.

So congratulations to Ohio State on making it to the WWE Wrestling Championship match. I’ll be cheering for the earthquake.

Can't remember if it was on Blue's first touchdown, but the field-cam view on the replay first highlighted what looked like Wingo being wrapped up well downfield while heading for the post. Wingo was circled and the replay reversed once to emphasize that, then forwarded again. Then the highlight came off of him as it went to the other Texas receiver heading down the left sideline. Even from a distance and behind Ewers, it looked pretty clearly like Wingo was practically being pulled over backward.

And of course we saw a couple of replays where his shirt was clearly being pulled away from his body.

It was frustrating, as was the tackle of Simmons (I think) on OSU's last touchdown drive when Howard should have been sacked.

I think someone already created a what-if thread for today, but this is separate enough and frustrating enough to be its own thread. Trying to avoid saying it was inequitable officiating, but it sure felt like OSU got away with too much.

While I don’t share the OP’s level of snark over osu’s malfeasance, I did find it funny at the time when 5 was called for dpi and the replay showed the receiver grabbing jersey to pull him backward at the start of the route, followed by 5 with his hands in the air clearly not interfering as their feet get tangled and the receiver falls.  Herbstreit even said well that’s opi that they let go.

and yeah the hold on Simmons on 3d and 8 that bought the time to throw the ball was hugely disappointing.

but we were in the game and had a chance to win, and didn’t. I guess cam could have wrapped up sawyer similarly and hoped to get away with it too.

did Texas not commit uncalled fouls?  Was it that one-sided?  I won’t be watching again to notice.

It was Blue's first score, and Wingo wasn't circled, but regardless of the "Kirk's Clicker" intent, the view did highlight Wingo being wrapped up about 10 yards downfield (ball was snapped around the 18) when the ball is already in the air.  The view shows Ewers would have been unwise to go for Wingo and Blue did score anyway, but the point remains that there was a lot of wrestling going on.

It worked well for OSU. The one place where I'd really second-guess the play-calling was the two PIs in the end zone at the end of the game (and a third potential one where our receiver was complaining). Should have just run a sneak from the 1 -- again and again -- after the second penalty. The Buckeyes were clearly going to do everything possible to make it tough on our receivers.

I'm sure we got away with some, and it definitely wasn't as one-sided as other crucial games have felt. Haven't even looked at the stats but think OSU got called more often.

At the same time, there were multiple plays when I thought, "Oh, FFS."

If you mean the third down play, the ball was tipped so no dpi. Unless there was holding earlier in the route.

Yep, that one. But, as you said, I'm also not going back any more. Going back to the first-half play is probably obsessive-compulsive enough. Probably a good time to get started on the live-action part of the day, because it's definitely too late to take back that eight-yard loss that got us into the mess in the first place.

On Judkins' first TD run of the game, Bill Norton has penetration, but is held and Judkins strolls in right next to where the hold is happening. No call.

We held a few times in pass pro with no call as well, but OSU definitely leaned into it. So much so that they actually got called for a couple.

I called it before the game though, they've been doing it all through the playoffs and the refs haven't been calling it on anyone.

There is technically “holding” on every football play of every game at every level.

This drives me nuts. I’m a “gray area” guy in most areas of my life… taxes, refrigerator food, religion, politics.

But the systemic holding that permeates college football these days pisses me off to a level that might actually give me a stroke.

My 13 yo daughter did an impression of me watching football. And her line was “that’s fucking holding!”. And I wasn’t even mad at her for swearing because I say that multiple times a game.

Without the leniency shown to olinemen grasping within the frame of defenders the modern football game is impossible.  Go watch 1960’s and 70’s pass blocking.

That’s not what I’m talking about, once a DL separates an outstretched OL arm tugging on the jersey around the numbers is a holding that should be called.

Thats true.  The leagues know that if you instruct referees to call holding, which as I previously said could technically be called every play, the game gets very slow and defensive oriented.  It’s physically impossible to block the modern Dline athletes without holding.

But the true holding that isn’t called can be outcome determinative. I’d rather the game slow down and it be played evenly. Evenly requires you allow holding inside the shoulders straight up but once the DL separates the holding becomes a significant impediment to the DL doing what it is supposed to do, I actually think the even nature of holding when locked up tilts heavily to the OL when the DL is separating and the hold is an outstretched arm. That needs to be called every time until the teams adjust. OLs have to let go once they are beat. To hold like that and not call it is a big reason why we lost last night and that’s on only one play.

This wasn't called holding but we got a flag for pointing at a guy. Howard was about to get lit the fuck up on this 3rd down. He had the ball out and could have easily been a huge strip sack. The extra time allowed a guy to get open and they wasted half the quarter and got 7 and flipped this whole game. Texas was starting to get home on him up to this point.

Maybe we need a new name for the penalty that helps emphasize when it ought to be called, then.

Because the term has now moved into polite discourse regarding air travel and other stuff, I nominate "rawdogging." (https://www.nytimes.com/2024/07/17/style/rawdog-flights-term.html -- sorry for folks who can't access, but the word now gets plenty of other media attention)

I think "giving him the business" has already been taken.

This play completely changed the outcome of the game, had it been called correctly.

You were probably a little subtle on that one, and your handle probably didn't help (although "BeerSwiller69" probably wouldn't do it either).

If a single beer does the job, you're more resilient than most of us on this one. Bourbon sales are probably strong in Texas today.

My initial response was gonna be to invite you over to the "Wives and the stupid shit they say/do" thread in Lulz, where I would hold court regarding homemade cinnamon rolls with no damn icing on 'em.

Exactly! Exactly, exactly.

Do what you want within the framework. Separation happens and then holding, and it’s not called.

No drinking here … made breakfast tacos on a Saturday morning with my sons, hugged them, turned on some Johnny cash and Willie Nelson signing together on a live album, just finished an IV drip and red light therapy, having lunch with a friend, sitting outside in the sun, exercising my gratitude attitude, hoping to get laid tonight, thinking about a nice dinner tonight too. More to life than football, and my people have indulged me patiently, time to get back to them. Life to live, better get busy living because I’m not up for dying.

Why I made my own damn icing for the cinnamon rolls, and was perfectly happy to have my daughter steal the last one.

This no call was devastating. Along with like 3 targeting plays that were also not called or even reviewed

Yep. I didn't even drown my sorrows last night or stress over it. Woke up about 830am, started laundry, had a good breakfast and watched some nature shows on Max. I drank a lot of water and then had coffee. My fiancee and I finished the Yellowstone series. Very sunny today and all this snow is melting here up near Dallas. Been cleaning all day listening to music. Sports losses don't phase me like they used to. Life goes on. NFL playoffs crank up today and that's always great entertainment if that's your thing.
