My best friend was the frontman for a Christian metal band here about a decade ago, so I was well familiar with the SA metal scene.

I wasn’t aware you were listing metal bands in your original post.

Really?  So…Saxon?  Doesn’t mean much to you?  Riot?  Them either?  Rush?  Triumph?  Killer Dwarfs?  Legs Diamond?  Judas Priest?

How about SA Slayer?  How about Presence?

Your familiarity with the SA Metal scene seems lacking.

I’m not big in the genre beyond the mainstream guys like Kublai Khan. I thought I knew the SA scene but I’m not familiar with any of those bands you talked about.

Dude.. you just don't know shit about San Antonio. It's ok, but just accept it.

When a thread about Alamo Ranch or some other lame suburb of SA pops up, have at it.  That seems to be your speciality.

Kublai Khan

Huh?  What?

Damn, dude, I was just poking fun, but now I’m feeling bad because I think you’re either completely retarded or delusional right now. Or…are you 12?

Since this is an SA thread, and we have been talking about music, here is a post from Tim DeLaughter of Tripping Daisy.  Chris was at SA Marshall with me, Midtown, and I'm  sure some others from here back in the day.

This is one of those posts that you don't want to make, but here we are.
Some of you may have heard that our beloved Chris Penn was in an accident. In true CP-fashion, he was working at Good Records taking down the advertising decals on the front window, the decal unexpectedly gave way and he fell backwards landing directly on his back.
As you may or may not know, Chris has been dealing with back and spine issues for quite sometime now.
He had a surgery on his neck from a fall last year, and at that time, they discovered that he had Ankylosing Spondylitis and Ossification of the Posterior Longitudinal Ligament (OPLL).
What all that means is he has very little space in his spinal canal and his spine has fused together, limiting his mobility. All that said, the fall was catastrophic for him. His spinal cord was bruised and paralysis was immediate from the neck down... I know.
It's a lot to take in… I know.
This happened on Monday around 11am.
We've been in ICU since...
As you can imagine, the world stopped and from that moment on it has been about Chris and what his future will look like.
He is stable at this time and being monitored around the clock. There are short term goals we're trying to reach under difficult circumstances and obviously limited by what his body will allow.
It's going to be a long road ahead with many challenges along the way, and we're just getting started.
We're talking about Chris Penn here, a pillar of our community and a freaking force of nature with everything he does.
I will tell you this, one of the first things he discussed through nodding his head at letters until a word was spelled was "order" as in order Charlie Crockett Records for the in-store this weekend? He nodded “yes,” and then instructed us on the quantity needed. That pretty much sums him up, so be sure to show up for that in-store Saturday. We’ve got some records to sell.
Realizing we've just dumped a lot of heavy info on you and you're probably riddled with questions and concerns, know this… he is in stable condition at the moment and in very good care. Currently, we are focused on getting his intubation tube removed so that he can start the journey of breathing without assistance. That's where we are and that's the first step of many to come.
I give you this latest information and will try to give updates on a need-to-know basis. Please refrain from reaching out directly to Jennifer or myself for updates, as we are 100% dedicated to Chris at this time. A lot of things are happening quickly, and the pressure to respond distracts us from our main focus of getting Chris the care he needs. I'm sure you understand.
Again since we're in ICU, no visitors are allowed at this time. There will be a time for that down the road, but not now.
We know Chris is loved by many and I’m sure it will be well documented in the comments of this post (which we will make sure to share with him).
If there are offers to help in any way, we will be informed by the person monitoring this post.
We are starting a GoFundMe as Chris, Jennifer and the boys (Oliver, Archie and Grover) will need our help.
There will also be a link for a MealTrain
if you would like to help in that way as well.
Please send your prayers and positive thoughts towards Chris and his family as we navigate his road to recovery.🙏🏽 peace

Me - 88 , Midtown - 89  I know there are several more.  My wife was 93.  Not sure if I want to know if you know her : )

Dad still lives up on Seneca in Leon Valley, and after living in Austin for a few years, I came back to my roots and live back in the Marshall/O'Connor area. It's home.

Marshall is still one of those old school SA high schools where everyone knows someone from either their time there, or someone in their family's time there.

Woah you’re close to me then. Oldest would routed to Marshall next year but he’s going to NSITE over at Holmes.

Man, I grew up on Seneca.  My parents moved to Shavano area when I was in Seattle for grad school.  Every now and then I'll drive down Seneca and be amazed at how big the trees are.

Chico, I still have my yearbooks, so your wife would be in one of them.  But we don't need to go there, lol.

Yeah, I think I recall one of your posts making me think we are right across Bandera from each other.

Damn...a lot of NW SA side folks on here...

NE SA was better way back then, though...^_^

But on the thread topic, I was just up to see my dad, who lives in Lakehills (at Medina Canyon).  He'd gone into SA for something and stopped at Mr. Juicy on San Pedro.  He said it was a damn good burger.  Just in case y'all hadn't heard about it...

You have an uncanny ability to be a complete doofus in every single thread that you post in.  Even in an innocuous one like this.  It’s truly a talent.

I think Rocko attended Marshall.

He went to Warren. He was impressed I was familiar with the 2 receivers they had that went to NIU in the late 2000s, they were his family friends or something.

Was he young enough to attend Warren? It's a fairly new school. I remember asking if he went to Jay and he said no. It was a long time ago on Shag so I could be remembering wrong.

Eh, most Northwest siders are all the same to me anyway.

Yep. He said he was there when it opened, which was 2002. He wasn’t an old guy. I always regretted not giving him shit when harlingen obliterated Warren in the 2011 playoffs. And then again in the 2022 playoffs.

That’s right, I remember now. It was a convo about Fredericksburgers on Braun right?

Interesting story about Chris Penn that Chico posted.  I had tons of classes with Chris.  He wore a heavy metal concert shirt to school every single day without fail for four years. I have no idea where or how he aquired that many shirts

Is the White Rabbit no longer a thing?

Paper Tiger now.  In fact, last time Midtown and I ran into Chris Penn, mentioned above, we were at the Tripping Daisy show at Paper Tiger.

Paper tiget gets some pretty decent acts

I think the last show I saw when it was still white rabbit was Sleigh Bells.

Ive seen Jack White, Silversun Pickups, Ghostland Observatory since the change to Paper Tiger. They definitely changed the type of music they are bringing in.

I am looking for some recs to help fill out a weekend. My wife and I will be there for our anniversary, so mostly looking for some fun activities and some restaurants. Particularly, looking for your best Mexican/taco spot for lunch and some spots for dinner. Based on what everyone says I imagine we will end up at the pearl area at some point but walkable from river walk is preferable.

what is the taco spot that gets posted here frequently that appears to have the most beautiful tacos I’ve ever seen? Someone knows what I’m talking about.

Tacos

Garcias

Taquitos West Ave

Taqueria Datapoint

Blanco Cafe

If you are in the Pearl, Mezquite has a great vibe and the food was really good. Ladino has good Mediterranean food, also by the Pearl. Southerleigh and Carriqui are both very good.

If you want to walk from the riverwalk. Rosario’s on St Mary’s is walkable as is Dough. They have great pizza and are on Alamo. Rosario’s new building has a nice roof top bar, they don’t serve food up there but if waiting for a table it’s a great spot for a ranch water or margarita. If you were to walk down Alamo further into Southtown, Bar Loretta is awesome as is Little Ems.

In downtown proper Pinkertons has good BBQ and Moons Daughter is good bar.

La Fonda on Main has the best patio in town and very good food.

Good rec. taqueria datapoint always a good one. Honestly though there’s 30,000 great taco spots in this city. Just gotta decide what level of dining you want. Food truck and picnic table, counter service, or sit down restaurant

Postponed my search for a while, but tried Mr. Juicy's tonight.  Plenty of quantity.  I had the double-meat double cheese combo.

Plenty of good atmosphere as well.  Six cooks standing and working in the kitchen and a 7th person cooking fries right behind the front counter.

Something not quite 100% right on taste, not sure what it is.  Maybe extra pepper in the special sauce.  Food was cooked fresh.  Still plenty hot when I arrived home, a 4.5 mile drive.  Fries are good.

I want to try again during the lunch hour some day.  One really weird thing was I was sitting watching the workers get ready to bring the food out and they unpacked the entire sack of food and repacked it.  Yep, it was mine.  one of the little French fry sacks contained the green leaf lettuce.

I wasted 50 cents on "sautéed onions", but it was such a tiny amount I barely noticed.  I did smell a tiny onion smell.

I think this is our go-to place.  Not as good as Teddy B's.  Not sure if Teddy B's made a comeback or not.

I had to go back like 10 pages but I think Rolando’s is what I was thinking of. But taquitos west ave looks damn good too. Thanks.

If you wanna keep it old-school and still walkable from downtown, the relocated Blanco Cafe is at 201 W. Commerce

If you’re in the teddy b’s neighborhood then you don’t have an excuse for not trying fredericksburger on Braun and bandera.

Edit: also in a gas station like teddy b
