For me, “social” media went wrong when the algos began favoring “content creators” to people you actually know.  No matter how much pulchritude some OnlyFan model is flaunting and how scandalous it is, it will never hit as hard as seeing that your high school prom date still has it, and has gotten divorced and is letting her friends know about both.

this is when it was clear it had gone rancid but the friend updates where all you see is the glitz, glamor and happiness had it's own damaging effect. In the end, the perfect pretty is half the reason why you should dump it all. happiness cannot be found without experiencing sadness. and as a side note, those who try to fight the algo by sharing EVERYTHING including their sadness and mundane parts of their lives don't make it authentic, they make it even more insufferable. basically, there is no way for social media to be a positive anymore.  the last time it was a positive was probably pre-IPO for facebook or shortly after that. it's all rancid raw chicken fouling up your life's refrigerator. ban it all.

Hmmm.. your selection seems pretty limited, almost specifically selected to make a point to the poor pearl clutchers. Let's just use the evil Googles on a bit of digging, shall we.

Many countries have imposed past or ongoing restrictions on the video sharing social network TikTok. Bans from government devices usually stem from national security concerns over potential access of data by the Chinese government.[1] Other bans have cited children's well-being and offensive content such as pornography.[2]

You may want to consider a finding a place in Antarctica or Russia to be able to maintain your freedom enabling TikTok.

Might want to check the link and read my post. Not sure why you felt compelled to put one of the bans in quotation marks. Is a government ban on government owned devices not really a ban at all? Also, why do you insist on derailing the anti-Zuck thread with your TikTok propaganda?

Wait, so china bans something they made? So it is too evil even for them!

And if those other "bans" are for government reasons, well then maybe there is something to wonder about.

Damn man, of all the troubles in the world, this is an odd one to want to fight over.

I don't know if this is any kind of a groundbreaking thought, but it occurs to me that these social media platforms began as entertainment.  Only more recently have they become sources of information and opinion.

Moderation of entertainment is almost completely acceptable within the bounds of a given platform.  First, it's privately owned so the 1A is not implicated, and owners/curators are free to curate the content of their platform in accordance with their "goals," to be family friendly, to be hardcore porn, to be funny, or musical, or whatever.

It is only once these platforms, somewhat inexplicably, became fora for information and public debate that content moderation is even questionable, even if on "sub-legal" grounds.

It's the opposite of news.  What was once serious news has become entertainment, and what was once frivolous entertainment has become news.

The problem is, entertainment is attractive to the morons, while actual news typically is not.  Similarly, those seeking to be informed avoid entertainment outlets when that is their goal, or maybe even altogether, to a large extent.

We're having this fucked up convergence between news/information and entertainment.  It has been recognized on the news end of things, somewhat less so on the entertainment end.

Being "social media sober" is what the Gen Z/Gen A associates at work are calling it, I learned recently at a happy hour. These are the same people who coined the term "sober curious", so take that for what you will.

Anyways, the younger associate class did a straw poll around the bar and I was shocked that like 1 in 10 uses facebook, most have and use instagram and snapchat, and that tiktok is considered "brain rot".

The flex is to be off social media and "raw dog".

Of course they could just have been trolling me and messing with me because I'm old.

I think there’s some truth to that.  It came up in a discussion between my cousins and I over the holidays. My parents and aunts and uncles are boomers and are active on FB, and I mean talking to one another, posting memes, just shooting the shit, etc..  My wife and I and siblings and cousins of the same generation (gen-Xers, the forgotten generation) are on FB as well, but it seems like most of us are using it either to post pics/news for our parents/relatives, or because of specific groups we follow (hobby/professional/high school/college/etc.) and for most of us, our usage feels pretty targeted - like we pop on and send a private message or check updates in a group and then pop off.

There is a very clear difference in how we are using it versus our boomer parents.

And then you look at my nieces/nephews/younger cousins who are in their 20s/teens, and their FB usage is extremely minimal, and it seems like half the time they are posting their Instagram stuff,

My bad! Can I still shit on Zuck or is that verboten too?

Oh shit I should read my own links better. If an adventure capitalist says letting governments, all governments, steal my info like China is good, he has to be right. We all know those guys are freedom fighters.

The Indian government said the decision to ban the apps was "to protect the data and privacy of its 1.3 billion citizens" and to put a stop to technology that was "stealing and surreptitiously transmitting users' data in unauthorized servers outside India".[26][27]

Apar Gupta, executive director of the Internet Freedom Foundation, said the censorship was absent from well-defined national security criteria and has "impacted more Indians than any before". A venture capital investor said it was a populist "feel-good" step, referring to the ban, and that the world has the right to do what China has long done in its own country.

AHB has it right…I’m born 1980 for reference.  Use it to plan events and manage comms, marketplace when selling shit, very occasional messaging.

Internet discussion peaked when forum software matured but before broad social media, when most communities were more narrow in focus.  Slashdot, Fark, Something Awful, was on a great Prelude forum back when I had one, etc.

Amassing the vast majority of online communication into a few tech monoliths…half of which owned or otherwise controlled by billionaires…puts way too much power into a handful of people.

I choose to participate only in limited moments, when that massive reach or sheer momentum of legacy contacts, is when I use Facebook.  Anytime I get curious and poke around further, my eyeballs alight and I leave that shit faster than NowThis.

Whatever niche interest you had—sports, cars, movies, action figurines— was and is better on bbs or Reddit and will never be good on a social media platform of any type.  Social media was only good to get friends and contacts to overshare visual media and is complete garbage as a substitute for a message board.

The internet is enshittened. Surly is one of the last forts. Even TexAgs, as an online expression of pure Aggieness, is shit.  2005 TexAgs was real live Old Army posting stupid but genuine shit from Navasota and now it’s just bots talking to each other.

Yeah, FB is just another communications and organization tool for me.  For my parents, it’s…well, a social media platform.

Of course, I came up from BBSes to Usenet, and was using GeoCities and MySpace and FB when they were just starting out, while my parents started out with CompuServe or AOL. And their usage of the internet before or during the 90s was pretty limited to things like email (work) and the groups and sites that were in the walled gardens of AOL, etc..

I and others like me were used to bouncing between platforms as new stuff arrived, and we are used to platforms and sites failing, so I don’t find myself as attached to platforms or websites.  When Leon bought Twitter, I started looking elsewhere, regardless of what I had done on Twitter.  I was able to archive my Twitter stuff.  I tried Threads,  but I’m done with them keeping it crippled on purpose to drive you to Instagram. So it was easy to pop over to Mastodon and BlueSky.

My parents and their friends found things they liked with the walled gardens like AOL, and then later on FB was everything they wanted ramped up to 11, and for them it and Amazon are the internet.

I think discussion is still going strong on places like Surly, Reddit, etc.. I heard over the years how email was going to die and be replaced by something else, yet more people are sending more emails than ever before.  Same with forums.  It’s possible they aren’t as popular as say 20 years ago, but I look at Discourse, Slack, Reddit, even places like Quora, and the speciality or geo-focused sites like Surly, and they are very active.

Hell, Reddit replaced Usenet completely.

Yep, FB is just another tool to me and I’m surprised it has lasted as long as it did, but I would not be surprised if somebody else came along within 5 years to…not necessarily replace it, but provide an alternative.

Reddit showed how to replace sites like Digg. FB showed how to replace MySpace, Geocities, AOL, etc. and there was obliviously a big gap between AOL and FB, but FB seems to have really sucked in the AOL fans.

I think that is the point with what China is doing - they've amended their feed so that Chinese "yutes" get bombarded with STEM feeds, educational reels, etc. as well as nightly cutoff times.  There is of course CCP "patriotism" bias, but that is to be expected.
