Can we talk about Zuckerberg?

Meta knows this has been the trend, and probably has known for years but is deluding their investor groups, the few people dumb enough to stick around after Zuck in all his wisdom bet the farm on the metaverse.

It reminds me of Yahoo in that there will always be that base of old people who are too ornery to use something else for their daily social media. I don't think Facebook will ever fully die for that reason, but it's never going to reclaim its status as the top dog. Instagram is kind of a different story, but the lack of competent leadership is reason enough to believe its days are numbered as well.

One of the things I appreciated about Facebook in the early days was that they didn't try to overwhelm you with a bunch of banner ads, pop-ups, and everything else that Yahoo and MySpace had become kind of notorious for. I knew as soon as Facebook opened things up to the non-.edu masses it would eventually change, and sure enough the API and Cambridge Analytica bullshit happened and that was that. Enshittification is inevitable, but I believe it can be planned around and slowed down.

There needs to be an easy way for groups to leave one platform behind and regroup elsewhere.

sounds like you need a blinky envelope...

I honestly have no idea what you're talking about, unless you're confusing me with another poster.  I was teasing a little before, but now I'm genuinely concerned about the brain rot you're suffering from due to social media use.  Maybe less TikTok will be good for you.

I actually did quote the wrong guy, so touche.

I am going crazy here because I'm not a good enough writer to carry this argument here on my own. Haha lol tiktok is bad for you. Lots of things are bad for you. They don't get oulawed basically under cover of darkness without either political party really willing to own up to it.

Final point, 7.3 million small businesses in America use or rely on Tiktok. But fuck them. Buy from Amazon and watch videos on Meta

I know this may come as a shock to someone who grew up under the thumb of of tech bros, but you can live a solid and productive life without engaging with any of these companies.

As for businesses relying on Tiktok, I mean, c'mon man. I think the energy drink producers and fly-by-night fast fashion shithouses will find another way to capture the hearts and minds of impressionable youth.

I've learned about more small dental practices and criminal law firms on TikTok than I ever did on Facebook.

If you're a crook with bad teeth, that must have come in handy.

I don't use Facebook or TikTok, so I have no idea which is the "better" platform.  Enough mind-numbing things are vying for my attention that social media had to go a few years back.  I did enjoy Instagram for following local artists and motorcycle content, but it became nearly impossible to find the things I wanted to see amidst the nonsense at one point, so I gave it up as well.

What does this mean?  A law was passed to end it in the US unless it changes ownership.  That was out in the open.  The constitutionality of that law is being litigated in the open, part of which is to attempt to expose more insidious motives for which Chinese ownership is a pretext.

A lawyer has parse words on a post where I even conceded that Im not a good enough writer to hold my own in these waters? Sharks on chum I tell ya.

Nobody voted for this, and the congress/administration that passed it got voted out. But they're still gonna do it before the new guy takes over because he doesn't want to get blamed for it

Congress was given a closed-door presentation on an imminent security risk situation with TikTok.  In response, the House worked with the Senate to draft a resolution requiring ByteDance to sell TikTok and it passed with 80% of the Senate voting to affirm.  I mean technically you're right, neither political party owned up to it because they both really wanted it done.

The people We elected voted for it. And laws are passed all the time and then the Congress/admin gets voted out. That doesn’t invalidate the vote or law passed

Yes, I realize that would include surly. But I'm willing to make sacrifices for the good of mankind.

If that's where this is headed then maybe you have a point. Its not though. State curated social media aint going anywhere

On this thread you’ve been fiending for TikTok’s sweet “pure” algorithim, randomly accused a poster of being an Israeli agent and claimed that Israel is behind the ban, and offered a completely wrong and brain-dead narrative of how this whole potential ban came about.

In all seriousness, ban or no ban, you need to personally delete the app and do a detox.

No, No.  I think the solution here is MORE social media.

Say what you will about the algorithms.....they KNOW SOME SHIT.  Cooking clips, fishing pages, and lotsa curvy women.  Tell me why I should hate social media again?  I get a recipe for a crabcake sammich, see someone fighting a beautiful roosterfish on the fly, and then connect with a gal whose page says "I'm middle aged, but soft in the right places - do you think I'm pretty?"  Well, yes I do.  I'll be right over with a crabcake sammich.....then maybe we'll go fishin'.

100% business above everything else. The guy is a real piece of work.

He's known about the ill effects of his platform on Teen Girls, uses enragement for more engagement, has let accounts of the rich and famous get away with a lot more than regular accounts (take the Neymar incident from a few years ago).

And now he's going on about the rules on Facebook and masculityity because clearly this is the model of masculinity if I ever saw one

image.thumb.png.638408d947eeb0586c387f409088119b.png

I could complain about the fact that when I browse FB I see more ads and posts from stupid accounts than any content from my friends and when I do see it, the content is like 2-3 days old. WHAT THE FUCK?!?!?!

I think it's time we have a thread about this fucker and dump all over him and his shitty platform.

My only differences is vintage car and truck content.

As Jerry Wayne Longmire puts it:  If  you can't find an agreeable woman to while away an afternoon in a vintage camper with a bottle of Old Crow, I'm not sure we can be friends.

That kinda sums up my algorithm as well.

I stopped using Facebook during Covid. I only go back to look at memories of certain days. I checked my feed and it was a ghost town. Do people still use it or did everyone move to Instagram? I've noticed a lot more Instagram type feeds that are shoehorned in.

The only Facebook posts I see are pushed there from Instagram.  I only look at Facebook now when I need to give shit away on my neighborhood Buy Nothing group.

Who could have guessed that a guy who made an algorithm to rank the fuckability of his female classmates might be a piece of shit?

It's wild that their recent changes to remove fact checking are directly driven by their need to grow engagement. They WANT everyone to argue over the basic fundamental facts of a situation - it drives engagement and clicks and ad revenue. Not to mention that sweet monetizable user data to boot.

I had faint hopes of a US version of the GDPR cutting his knees out from under him, but it was folly to hope as much. Dude has too much money to worry about silly things like laws and the consent of his subjects/users/products now

He’s an even worse piece of shit. He “allegedly” stole the original idea for Facebook from guys he was coding for under contract, then maneuvered to screw over his co-founder with a stock issuance move that left his co-founder with a pittance. He’s a terrible human being.

Well, here's where I am certain I'll catch some flak. There's a lot of shit I don't like and a lot of really fucking dumb people say really fucking dumb shit. However, I also believe in the Bill of Rights and I think the First Amendment is facing existential and real crisis from all sides. So, within legal bounds I do support the right of idiots to say idiotic shit, up to a point. I'm not trying to CR up this thread so I'll leave it at that.

Okay, soap boxing finished, this is the reaction of this person amuses the shit out of me. I'll stand up for the rights and causes I believe in, defend my child's rights to the end of the earth.. I mean..

Of course. . Um.. until it effects my paycheck.
