Attic insulation question

Recommended Posts

I bought my home about 35 years ago, and at the time the current owner had blown cellulose insulation in my attic that was as high as the framing, but now has compressed to about half the height.

it has been suggested that I buy bags of cellulose and add to the top of the current insulation until it reaches the top of the framing, put unfazed corning blanket insulation crosswise over that.

Someone else suggested, renting the giant vacuum and sucking out the old cellulose and relaying the pink blankets between the frames as if it were a new installation.

As I have a case of the olds, I will not be living there more than 10 years, so I am looking to do something that will increase the resale value - or at least not be seen as a deficit by a potential buyer - and yet not cost me a fortune as I won’t be living that long.

I would appreciate any advice from people who are in that business.  My son just moved in for various financial reasons, and so I intend to use him as slave labor for as much as this as possible - and I had the notion that the winter was the perfect time to mess with this

I had mine done last spring in Hewitt.  I did some quick math and determined it would be easier to pay someone. It would also be quicker.  I didn't have to be up in the attic and i could avoid an inevitable fight with my wife.  Plus I had fallen through the ceiling about a month before.

I had a guy come in and he and his son knocked it out in about 90 mins.  13 inches on top of 20 year old cellulose. For about an r39. I can tell a difference. Plus I get a tax rebate. It was worth it for me to pay someone.

My house is 1700ish sqft.  I think I paid about 1500 bucks.

I’d rent the blower machine and have your son blow it on top. Just make sure he doesn’t blow it over the soffit vents and block them

Only expertise I have is my dad made me and my brother do it 30-40 years ago. That insulation is Itchy stuff

Don’t do cellulose. Get the Owens Corning Atticat product from Home Depot. You add half of the compressed block to the hopper and blow it in like cellulose. It’s really easy and no mess. My wife loaded the hopper while I spread it in the attic. We did 20 bags in about 2 hours.
