I honestly don’t remember the last time I heard about a player at any school missing time because of grades. It was definitely pre-Covid.

They've gotten it worked out. Especially now that players are making hundreds of thousands of $$$. At most schools the players take mostly online classes and they take them with "tutors"

Why even require them to take classes at this point. They are professional athletes that will soon be getting paid by the athletic department to play football. I guess you could make it optional for the few that actually want to learn something. But the traditional notion of "student athletes" seems pointless these days. Let them major in football.

Even if Texas matched the record for guys getting drafted, that's like 86% of the team that probably need to accept that they're gonna have to either play school or enter the workforce

The funny thing is I bet the school could create a pretty useful curriculum in majoring in football everything from the business aspect, communication and physical/nutrition aspect.

Why are there so few? What are the requirements to make it?

I teach an upper-division elective at the business school and have had multiple student-athletes in my class. As a whole, they are above the average for my class--they show up most of the time, pay attention, and do the work. I don't know what sports they play unless they give me documentation about the specific classes they are allowed to miss due to University-sponsored sports events. One student who plays a sport people know about wrote to me yesterday asking the best way to make up the work they have to miss due to the competition schedule.

I am impressed by our student-athletes. They work much harder than I did when I was a student.

I will qualify my earlier comments by suggesting I was really talking about the football players and basketball players (probably baseball as well)....the ones that arrive in Austin with fat NIL deals with dreams of a high paying professional career. I suspect that swimmers, rowers, etc... are probably more disciplined than the average student and would do well in class. But I'm guessing the majority of our scholarship football and basketball players wouldn't sniff admission to UT if it weren't for the fact that they were badass athletes. I've heard a lot of these guys speak and they don't sound particularly well educated.

Totally fair, and what you are saying could be true.

My sample size is small, and doesn't include the sports you mention as far as I know, but I have been happy to have student-athletes in my class because they take the "student" part seriously and are really trying to pick up the material. Of course, there is self-selection bias because I teach in a major that has a reputation for being difficult. No academic advisor will direct students to our department for an "easy" major.

That we are still pretending that this isn't a minor-league professional sport is fucking hysterical to me.

The level of play that Sark consistently puts on the field has me plenty hopeful.

IF they are ever able to major in football the University would be negligent if they didn't have some basic economic classes, and maybe something on how to evaluate agents and lawyers without hiring your buddies.  Maybe even classes on how to get an Uber at a bar, how to keep from fighting at a bar, or how to ride with other people and not have a gun in your lap.  Don't forget the car salesman courses.  Those all seem like they could be useful.

With that GPA in Engineering, one will surely get a good job.  More to the point, this is part of the roster building.  Smart player better than the alternative

It has been a spell since we had a guy fall asleep at the wheel in a drive through, or get in a fight at a bar on Riverside, or get caught with a backpack full of weed.  Good job Sark!

Not tryin' to be a dick or nothing but I've heard numerous Texas players speak and have been genuinely impressed.  I know Acho(s) can be annoying at times but they are great representatives. Vince and Sam have sounded a bit dull immediately following a big game (Rose/Sugar) but I'm sure I would've been pretty cringe myself at that age - without the wins.  For the most part when I hear our players speak I say, "those are my guys."
