It's probably unlikely, but I guess they could give Joseph the entire secondary and hire an on-field coach elsewhere (DE/OLB coach or some such)

I for one hope they move Joseph to safeties and get a real cornerbacks coach

Does PK have any desire to be a HC? Bring Lake in. Either him or Nansen have the ability to carry the baton in that event.

He said like last month he has no desire

Hot Board: Who Texas could target as safeties coach

Hank South (Horns 247)

Spoiler

Hot Board: Who Texas could target as safeties coach

Hank South (Horns 247)

Texas will have a new coach leading the safeties in 2025 after Blake Gideon earned himself a promotion as Georgia Tech's defensive coordinator, first-reported by Horns247's Chip Brown and 247Sports' Matt Zenitz. Will it be an in-house hire or will Steve Sarkisian look beyond? Here are some candidates of note.

Chip Brown, Jordan Scruggs, and Eric Henry contributed to this story.

Terry Joseph
AGE: 51

CURRENT POSITION: Defensive Passing, Secondary — Texas

CONNECTION: This wouldn't be Joseph getting a different job as much as just taking the safeties under his umbrella after working primarily with the cornerbacks. Joseph and Gideon led a very strong campaign in the secondary in 2024. Joseph is well-respected, a strong recruiter, and has proven he can field an elite secondary. This could make sense in that LaAllan Clark was just hired as DE/OLB coach with the Longhorns, so he could slide into another official on-field position.

Michael Huff
AGE: 41

CURRENT POSITION: Assistant Director of Player Development — Texas

CONNECTION: Texas legend. One of three Thorpe Award winners in Texas history. With former Texas safety Blake Gideon leaving, one could surmise the Longhorns wishing to keep the continuity by adding another former UT standout. Huff has been around the program for years since retiring from the NFL where he played for the Baltimore Ravens, Oakland Raiders, and Denver Broncos over the course of eight years. Would be a strong move recruiting-wise as well, especially within the state.

Will Harris
AGE: 36

CURRENT POSITION: Assistant coach, Secondary — Florida

CONNECTION: Harris played at USC when Sarkisian was the Assistant Head Coach for the Trojans. He spent time coaching under Pete Kwiatkowski at Washington as well. Respected recruiter with West Coast ties. Helped lead the charge for elite wide receiver Dallas Wilson ending up with the Gators this past recruiting cycle. Finished No. 7 in the recruiter rankings.

Jimmy Lake
AGE: 48

CURRENT POSITION: Available

CONNECTION: The Atlanta Falcons let Lake go this offseason after a one-year stint as defensive coordinator. He's spent time as an assistant head coach in the NFL, as well as the head coach at Washington from 2020-21. He's a defensive backs coach at his core and has spent plenty of time working with Texas DC Pete Kwiatkowski at Washington, Boise State and Montana State back in the day.

Duane Akina
AGE: 68

CURRENT POSITION: Defensive Backs coach — Arizona

CONNECTION: One of the original architects of DBU at Texas, Akina was set to return to the Forty Acres last offseason as a senior analyst, however, he received a promotion to be Arizona's defensive coordinator. The Wildcats moved him back into the role of defensive backs coach following the season. It would be a homecoming and opportunity to coach some top tier talent on the back end of the defense if the Longhorns pursued Akina again this offseason. He'd have a lot of support from former DBs, and players in general, in the program.

Joey Thomas
AGE: n/a

CURRENT POSITION: Passing Game Coordinator, Secondary Coach —Nevada

CONNECTION: Joined former Texas coach Jeff Choate when he took the Nevada job. Left a Senior Defensive Analyst role in Austin. Extremely well-respected coach both by the UT staff and many players on the roster. Led Nevada to the No. 36 passing defensive in the country in 2024, allowing just 198.6 yards per game, up from No. 115 in the country in 2023. NFL veteran, as well as one of the best cornerbacks in Montana State history.

Terrence Brown
AGE: 33

CURRENT POSITION: Defensive Backs — Cal

CONNECTION: Another Louisiana native that's coached under Pete Kwiatkowski at Washington. The Golden Bears defense has been a bright sport for the ACC program, including leading the nation in fumbles recovered in 2023. Brown has proven he can recruit both from the high school level and in the Transfer Portal.

Marcus Woodson
AGE: n/a

CURRENT POSITION: Co-Defensive Coordinator — Arkansas

CONNECTION: Longtime SEC assistant, with another stint at Auburn, as well as a stop at Florida State. Helped the Razorbacks deploy the three-high safety look that gave quarterbacks -- Quinn Ewers included -- fits throughout the season. As Texas expands its SEC footprint on the recruiting trail, Woodson is a logical candidate to fill the role.

Gary Patterson
AGE: 64

CURRENT POSITION: Available

CONNECTION: Former Special Assistant to the Head Coach at Texas with Steve Sarkisian, Patterson spent a brief few months as a consultant at Baylor before the start of the 2024 season. Patterson is a TCU legend after guiding the Horned Frogs to national prominence for two-plus decades. Patterson specializes in defensive back coaching, and coached and/or recruited two Thorpe Award winners in Fort Worth (Trevon Moehrig and Tre Tomlinson).

I’d be surprised if Huff was pushing hard for the gig tbh. I don’t know shit, but I get the sense that he enjoys the relative low stress/responsibility of what he currently does while still getting to be part of the program.

Joseph to safeties seems most ideal scenario and bring in a CB coach.

Fuck no on Akina and Patterson because they're old as fuck.

Who cares how old they are? If they can coach they can coach.

What about Rod Babers? Is he just a talking head now or does he have what it takes to coach? Always seems super knowledgeable about what's happening on the secondary.

I love Babers but this cannot be a serious suggestion. Dude has never held a coaching position at any level.

Does he "need" to be added to the list? I understand not everything is the coach's fault, but how about he put together a leeeeetle better track record right before bringing him over. That last stop was a bit of an oof.

So a Texas Tech cast off ???

Quote

Texas Tech has announced the departure of Tim DeRuyter and Marcel Yates

By: Texas Tech Athletics Communications

LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire announced Sunday two changes to his coaching staff as defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter and defensive passing game coordinator and secondary coach Marcel Yates will not return for the 2025 season. Both changes are effective immediately.

"I appreciate the work Coach DeRuyter and Coach Yates have provided our program the past three seasons," McGuire said. "This was a difficult but necessary decision as we continue to elevate this program to competing annually at the highest levels of college football."

Not just any cast off. If you're going to fail, do so spectacularly. Texas Tech was ranked 133 out of 134 teams in all of Division I in pass defense, which was Yates primary responsibility along with being the defensive backs coach.

Jeff Howe had some interesting suggestions on OTF for the hole left by Gideon:

1.) Jeff Hayward - Oregon State Defensive Coordinator. Coached DBs with Sark at multiple stops.

2.) Carl Scott - Seattle Seahawks DB Coach. Coached DBs with Sark at Alabama.

3.) Ephraim Banda - Cleveland Browns Safeties Coach. GA under Duane Akina. From San Antonio, TX.

Jeff also mentioned Joey Thomas as a wild card. Assistant DB coach who left with Choate to Nevada to take full-time DB coach role.

*Keith Hayward....and that's an interesting option. Oregon State had one of the worst defenses in the country (110th is SP+, 112th in FP+), but their personnel sucked and it was the first year of a head coach that probably shouldn't have been hired.

Hiring a coordinator as a position coach is always intriguing.
