Trust the fucking coach who has gone 25-5 the last 2 years and has won 69% (nice) of his games here?

He's gonna hire Demarco Murray, isn't he?

Cadillac Williams was RB coach at Auburn for 5 years and the Raiders last year but was not retained by Pete Carroll.

Tap into the Rutgers program for Damiere Shaw who is a rising star in the industry.

Savon Huggins from Boston College is a name that has shown up in about 3 different RB coaching searches.

Sucks that this didn't happen sooner because going after Penn St's RB coach would have been nice but he is at ND now.

IT

Inside Texas takes a quick look at some coaches who make sense to replace Tashard Choice as well as some who don’t.

Makes sense

Carlos Locklyn, Ohio State: There’s been some talk Locklyn was on the short list just weeks ago. If so then that’s probably still the case. He already has relationships with a number of top running backs in the country. He can also sell effectively having a platoon after the season the running backs at Ohio State just had.

Khenon Hall, Baylor: IT is hearing Hall is as close to Tashard Choice 2.0 as you can get. “Everybody loves him,” one source said. He’s known as a great recruiter. Baylor had a 1000-yard rusher this season in Bryson Washington plus another back in Dawson Pendergrass that almost reached 700 yards. Plenty of experience in Texas, including at Texas Southern and SMU. He’s a South Oak Cliff grad.

Kolby Smith, Arkansas: Has a good relationship with the notable Texas high school running backs this cycle. Played and coached in the NFL. Had a good platoon of runners this past season, including former Longhorn and former quarterback Ja’Quinden Jackson. Much of his career, including his time as a college football player, has been spent with Bobby Petrino.

Jabbar Juluke, Florida: Certainly not young but he’s Florida’s best recruiter, has the proverbial skins on the wall, and is about as good of a recruiter of Louisiana as you’ll find. Has relationships with top backs, including those in the Southeast United States. Has coached all over the country including at Louisiana Tech, LSU, Texas Tech, Louisiana, and Florida.

Doesn’t make sense

Ra’Shaad Samples, Oregon: Samples makes a lot of sense from the standpoint of being young, a good recruiter, and having Dallas ties, but Oregon would be unlikely to allow Texas to wallet whip him.

Stan Drayton: The one-time Texas RBs coach doesn’t provide the value add you’re looking for at the position, young, energetic, volume recruiter.

We’ll keep this list updated as we receive more intel.

I understand what I am about to say is not the general Surly-styled reaction; but can a poster not simultaneously have belief that Sark will make a good hire AND also lament the fact that one of our best recruiters (one who holds immensely strategic ties to an area of the country we need to, and are, currently, recruiting well) is leaving? I also want to call out that I understand there is more to recruiting the southeast, specially metro Atlanta (the move to the SEC, NIL, winning, Texas' development and NFL draft placement trajectory, Sark's ties, Baker's ties, and more), than having TC on staff.

I imagine this has more to do with work life balance.  Choice probably doesn't need the money.  With a new born, being on the road all the time, constantly having to recruit on the phone probably wears on you.

Texas has gone from a coaching graveyard to a place where people come and can advance their careers, I'll take that compared to the alternative.

Yea I hear having a new kid makes you less concerned about finances

Pay:
Locklyn - 650k
Smith - 350k
Juluke - 450k, just got an extension and can't find the new value.

Tony Alford could be a name if we wanted to pry him from Michigan. He was the RB coach at Ohio St before taking the Michigan job.

Considering the big raise Choice was about to it, I wonder if some college OC's could be in play if we are willing to pay the $750-$800k+ we were planning on paying Choice.

I certainly understand doom and gloom is what gets some people's rocks off (NTTAWWT), but maybe wait until Sark makes a hire before lamenting that we have completely abandoned a strategic area of the country?

If he flips the script and hires Juluke, a lot of the premature whining about losing recruiting ties to the SE will have aged badly.

Hall is the name a buddy of mine that has a D1 RB son said.  Said it wouldn’t surprise him if Samples got it though.

Khenon Hall seems interesting.

Samples interviewed with the Cowboys so I wouldn't be surprised to see him in the mix

We know Sark likes Drayton based on wanting to retain him for several years. And NIL can do some of the recruiting for him now. I wonder if he could be brought in as an analyst though since he's getting paid by Temple.

Did he like Drayton a bunch, or was he just making sure Bijan wasn't going anywhere during the coaching transition?

I'll maintain my stance that we can do better than a guy who is only on the people's list because he coached here in the past.

I don’t think it’ll happen, I don’t think it should happen, but is it possible Sark uses the Oklahoma state guy in this spot since a lot of the coaching changes have shaken out already? I think we can and should aim higher, and Bakers year here has in my eyes given Sark a bit of a “trust the process” leash. Just speculating at this point.

He already did when he didn’t get interviewed for the HC position after Harbaugh left. He sat out last season.

Michigan didn't renew his contract for 2024, they went out and hired the Ohio St RB coach, Tony Alford.

I don't think he's going to go with a TEs/FBs guy that Gundy cut loose for a key role on the on-field staff, I've gotta say.

They tried to retain him. Alford was a pivot after he walked. He was Associate HC and was hurt Warde Manuel gave the job to Moore without at least interviewing him.

Good, that is a clear downgrade for Penn St as well as being a clear downgrade from Choice.

Dratyon's claim to Texas legacy is recruiting Bijan in which Gerry had this to say regarding that:
