I understand he is an elite recruiter.  And he recruits far more than just the RB position. I just don't think his recruiting of running backs has been anything to write home about.  Not an F or anything like that.  But just average for what Texas can get.

And I hope we grab one in the spring portal unless the two high school guys have some kind of amazing initial returns.

My take on it is that we definitely hit on CJ Baxter. Saban said that Baxter was the best running back they played in 2023, which says a lot. He has just had the injury bug. I think if we would have seen a healthy Christian Clark this year that would have changed the dynamics of the RB room quite a bit. James Simon seems like another guy that I think will thrive in this system, but obviously TBD. Dont forget that Tre Wisner was another Choice guy that we added late in the cycle.

I have not been that enamored with Choice's recruiting of the RB position.  Not saying it's a failure or anything.  Just not that impressed with it.

Uhhhh

22 Jaydon Blue composite 195, 247 had him as 101. That's after skipping his senior year which is crazy.

23 CJ Baxter, composite 18, five star, excellent true freshman year

23 Tre Wisner, composite 494, just ran for a thousand yards

24 Jerrick Gibson, composite 117

24 Christian Clark, composite 339

25 James Simon, composite 198

25 Rickey Stewart

Plus what he's done with the dudes already on campus and what he brings to the table outside the RB room.

That's a pretty fucking great job. Texas for Bijan as a composite 5 star RB, Jonathan Gray in 2012, Malcolm Brown in 11. So four in 15 years and he got one of them.

Genuinely recruiting isn't something to complain about with him, period. Be impressed with him, because he was absolutely one of the best RB coaches and recruiters in the country.

Bio
Errin Joe - Football - Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

Georgia Tech letterwinner Errin Joe is in his sixth season overall on his alma mater’s staff. He serves as the Yellow Jackets’ director of player personnel.

Joe returned to The Flats in 2023 after spending the 2022 season as assistant director of player personnel at Alabama, where he helped the Crimson Tide recruit the nation’s No. 1-ranked incoming class. During his time at Alabama, he was named one of college football’s rising stars in personnel and recruiting staffers by On3.

Prior to his 10-month stint at Alabama, Joe was hired as director of recruiting at UConn. He served in the role for two months before joining the Crimson Tide.

From 2018-21, Joe was a member of Georgia Tech’s football staff. He came back to Tech in 2018 as a graduate assistant, working with the Yellow Jackets’ offensive line. He held that role for three seasons before moving into recruiting as Tech’s associate director of player personnel in 2021.

As a student-athlete, Joe started 16 games over his final two seasons at Georgia Tech (2014-15). He started the final seven games of the 2014 campaign at right tackle, helping anchor an offensive front that led the nation in rushing with a school record 342.1 yards per game and allowed just 0.79 sacks per game, good for second nationally.

He returned to The Flats after spending the 2017 season as quality-control assistant at Florida International University. Following the end of his playing career, he spent the 2016-17 academic year as an English teacher at his high school alma mater, Lake Gibson H.S. in Lakeland, Fla.

Joe needed just three-and-a-half years to earn a bachelor’s degree in literature, media and communication from Georgia Tech, graduating in December 2014, and studied economics while completing his final season of athletic eligibility in 2015. He earned master’s degree in building construction and facility management from Georgia Tech in 2020.

Not really in the conversation, and the UO media have preemptively said they'll match any offer. So no to both.

The $9.95er stuff from yesterday made it seem like Texas was not interested in even interviewing Samples or even attempting to get Drayton to wait before taking the PSU job.

Jackson is who my mind went to.  I don’t think Flood would jump and Baker bouncing already, early in a career, doesn’t seem smart, to me anyways

According to a level 3 source in Fayetteville, this is another name to keep an eye on. He fits the Sark profile of young energetic up and comer and does have some overlap with Brandon Harris at UT. He was a finalist to be on Sark’s initial staff. He’s never coached running backs but seems to be loved everywhere that he’s been.

Well everyone knows that Tashard Choice developed an NFL running back room and recruited the position as well as any coach in the country.

What this book presupposes is………maybe he didn’t?

Alright, fine, let’s break down Choice’s RB recruiting at Texas.

First, the context:

- He inherited Robinson, Johnson, Robinson, Brooks, Blue, and Red. 4 of them went pro after three years, which means the backs that he recruited played earlier in their careers than would be expected of other positions.

- NIL: It’s not my impression that Choice has lacked appropriate support (hence Baxter and Gibson) but we’ve also heard that some RBs have been taken off the board due to their asks (e.g., Davison). That is probably something that’s especially important to consider for his RB2 takes.

The signees:

- 2023: Baxter (#1 RB in the class), Wisner (#28)

- 2024: Gibson (#3), Clark (#42)

- 2025: Simon (#9), Stewart (#58)

Total production:

Some scattershooting takeaways based on the six player-seasons we’ve seen from his signees so far: He signed a top ten RB recruit every year. 2 of the player-seasons were lost to injury. Baxter was the first ever true freshmen RB to start opening day for Texas and was a solid contributor on the 2023 team. Wisner contributed on special teams and had a couple flashes as a true freshman that he then translated to a 1000 yard season as RB3. Gibson looked really good but had fumble issues. They are all culture fits. There were some understandable frustrations with Baxter’s and Gibson’s freshman years due to injury and fumbles. Gibson looks really good as a short yardage back.

I just don’t see a reason to complain about his recruiting. That one guy completely missed Choice’s point when he said he didn’t want to recruit a guy from the portal. It wasn’t about not wanting to recruit a college player; it was about liking his guys better. I’m sure NIL is also a factor there. Do you want to go pay for a guy to compete with Baxter, Gibson, and Wisner, or do you want to retain Manny Muhammad/add Travis Shaw/sign Justus Terry?

Goddamn you motherfuckers will argue about anything. Why are we wasting time arguing about whether Choice was a good coach and recruiter? Is this is a real conversation? He was obviously excellent in both roles. Anyone who says otherwise is either ignorant, stupid, or trolling. Stop wasting time on this shit.

Not trying to take a shot at @Bodacious Bevo or @NoName and I appreciate the info. But I am flummoxed that we've spent the last 4 pages responding to one of the dumbest takes I've ever read on this board.

More interested in Orphey. The more you look the better he the hire looks. He was given 2 contract extensions at Rutgers and a significant bump from 400k to 500k in his last extension at Rutgers. You only do that if he is garnering interest.

Mark Orphey is rumored to be on the move from Rutgers football - that was Ole Miss

He has 2 drafted players in his 3 years at Rutgers with a chance to add to that in this year's draft

Notable 2024 players

Eric Rogers, CB

After three years at Northern Illinois, Rogers transferred to Piscataway to play for Orphey. In the most recent 2024 campaign, Rogers had 34 tackles with 1.0 sack. He forced two fumbles, recorded one interception, and had three pass breakups.

Rogers was Rutgers’ highest graded defender according to Pro Football Focus. His 81.5 grade led the team, as did his coverage grade of 80.3. Opponents threw at Rogers 36 times, completing 21 of their passes for 215 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.

Robert Longerbeam, CB

A four-plus year contributor who arrived at Rutgers as an athlete, Longerbeam appeared in 53 games with 31 starts at cornerback. He earned an invite to the 2025 NFL Combine. During the 2024 season, Longerbeam posted 45 tackles with 1.5 for loss. He had two interceptions and 11 pass breakups. He’s a two-time All-Big 10 honorable mention selection.

He earned a 71.4 defensive grade per Pro Football Focus with a 73.7 coverage grade. When thrown at, opponents were 31-for-55 for 360 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Drafted pupils from Rutgers

2023 – Christian Braswell – Jacksonville Jaguars – Round 6

Braswell posted a defensive grade of 86.3 in 2022 with a strong coverage grade of 87.1. Opponents were 24-for-41 throwing against him, tallying 218 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions.

[Join Inside Texas TODAY and get 7 days for just ONE DOLLAR!]

2024 – Max Melton – Arizona Cardinals – Round 2

Melton played in all 17 games for the Cardinals this year with 51 tackles, a forced fumble, and five passes defended. At Rutgers in 2023, he posted a defensive grade of 73.5 and a coverage grade of 74.1. Opponents were 24 for 44 against Melton, notching 252 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions.

I don't think PK would ever have head coaching aspirations, as we've seen him comment before to the media. However, I could see him making the jump to be an NFL DC. That being said, he's already making 1.8m/yr and the top 4 DC's make a range from 4.5m/yr at #1 to 2.4m/yr at #4. Maybe he doesn't like recruiting but I can't see it being about money.

For reference PK ranks in at the #10 highest paid college DC.

Better not be PK on defense in NO. Wonder if he has NFL desires

Per this article Tracking Kellen Moore's New Orleans Saints coaching staff hires - SaintsWire, the Saints are looking for a slew of coaches including DC, DL and DB to name a few (article in spoiler below). Thinking PK isn't looking to leave but in the unlikely event he does, seems likely Nansen assumes the role. But as Bobby Burton suggests, no sense really worrying about it until there's something more substantial.

Spoiler

Kellen Moore has only been on the job for a few days, but he’s already busy building his New Orleans Saints coaching staff. Moore chose to retain a respected position coach in Keith Williams, who works with the wide receivers, while also bringing back former Saints offensive line coach Brendan Nugent (who he worked with on the Los Angeles Chargers). And he’s just getting started.

We’ll keep tabs on all of the Saints coaching hires as they’re reported in the days and weeks ahead. Moore did have to get a bit of a late start on the process after guiding the Philadelphia Eagles to a blowout win in Super Bowl LIX, so it’ll be interesting to see how he chooses to fill out his staff with other options off the market. Check this page often for updates:
Offensive coordinator: TBD

2024: Klint Kubiak

Jan. 26: Kubiak, 37, went one-and-done with the Saints, having left town for a better opportunity on the Seattle Seahawks. It makes sense. He wants to call plays, and that wasn’t going to happen under Kellen Moore. We’ll see which assistants and players join him in the Pacific Northwest this offseason.
Quarterbacks coach: TBD

2024: Andrew Janocko

Feb. 3: Janocko, 36, followed Kubiak to Seattle. That move makes sense for him after Kubiak recruited him to New Orleans in the first place. The Saints front office reportedly likes Spencer Rattler, but we’ll see if Kellen Moore and his crew feel the same way. Don’t be shocked if the Seahawks try and trade for Rattler if they need another backup behind Geno Smith. Read more here.

Running backs: TBD

2024: Derrick Foster

Feb. 3: Foster, 61, made a kind of surprising decision to bolt for an opening on the Dallas Cowboys. It’s a little perplexing because you’d think he would be a candidate to work with Moore in New Orleans, having held this same position on the Chargers staff when Moore was their offensive coordinator. But maybe Moore has someone else in mind. Foster did help Alvin Kamara put up his best rushing numbers in years.

Wide receivers: Keith Williams

2024: Keith Williams

Feb. 12: Williams, 53, is returning from the 2024 team, and this has to be a popular move with his players. The receivers appreciated the energy he brought to the position and steps he took to hold them accountable. It says a lot that Marquez Valdes-Scantling was cut by two teams, signed with the Saints at midseason, and finished the year as one of the best weapons on their roster. It says even more that guys like Dante Pettis and Kevin Austin Jr. were able to make a positive impact coming in off the bench once injuries sidelined Rashid Shaheed and Chris Olave.

Wide receivers assistant: TBD

2024: DeNarius McGhee

Tight ends: Chase Haslett

2024: Clancy Barone

Feb. 13: Barone, 61, had been with the team since 2023, but Moore chose to bring another young up-and-comer with him from his Dallas Cowboys days. The 32-year old Haslett (son of former Saints head coach Jim Haslett) quickly rose through the ranks on Mike McCarthy’s staff and last year worked as the Cowboys pass game coordinator. Tight ends play a crucial role in Moore’s offense as pass catchers, so it was vital he get this hire right. Read more here.

Offensive line: Brendan Nugent

2024: John Benton

Feb. 3: Benton, 62, also joined Kubiak on the Seahawks. That isn’t too surprising given their history together in other spots and his familiarity with the Kubiak family. Still, he could be a big loss. Trevor Penning finally developed into a competent starter after moving to right tackle and Taliese Fuaga converted to left tackle as a rookie without missing a beat. He left big shoes to fill. Read more here.

Feb. 12: Nugent, 42, coached for the Saints before — he worked as Dan Roushar’s assistant for several years before he was promoted to the full-time role in 2021, only to be fired by Dennis Allen a year later. He did some good work with the Los Angeles Chargers, crossing paths with Moore there, before catching on with the Seattle Seahawks as an assistant last season. Now he’s running the room again. Read more here.
Senior offensive assistant: TBD

2024: Rick Dennison

Feb. 12: The Seahawks have asked permission to interview Dennison, 66, for the same role on their staff, and it wouldn’t be a shock if he makes a lateral move just like Kubiak, Janocko, and Benton. He came to New Orleans to work with them a year ago and Kubiak would like to keep that core together in Seattle. Read more here.
Offensive assistant: TBD

2024: Jahri Evans

Jan. 29: Evans, 41, has expressed confidence the Saints would keep him after hiring a new head coach, and he’s done good work in his role as an assistant developing offensive linemen. Any time you can get pointers from a future Hall of Famer, it’s worth it. Read more here.

Offensive assistant: TBD

2024: Kevin Petry

Offensive assistant: TBD

2024: Jordan Traylor

Defensive coordinator: TBD

2024: Joe Woods

Feb. 6: Woods, 54, left the Saints to join Pete Carroll’s staff on the Las Vegas Raiders. He struggled to keep the defense in shape after Dennis Allen was fired at midseason and injuries hammered the depth chart, but he’s a respected coach around the league. Read more here.

Defensive line: TBD

2024: Todd Grantham
Pass rush specialist: TBD

2024: Brian Young

Linebackers: TBD

2024: Michael Hodges

Jan. 27: Hodges, 38, left for a lateral move to join the Cincinnati Bengals. He’s a highly-respected assistant and has interviewed for defensive coordinator openings in recent years, but chose to go pursue a new opportunity rather than wait to see if he’d be retained on Moore’s staff. Read more here.

Defensive backs: TBD

2024: Marcus Robertson

Feb. 12: Robertson, 55, came to the Saints along with Joe Woods Jr. and left with him to go join Pete Carroll on the Las Vegas Raiders. He’s a good coach and is respected by his players but preferred more of a sure thing than a wait-and-see to learn whether Kellen Moore would retain him. Read more here.

Senior defensive assistant: TBD

2024: Peter Giunta

Defensive assistant: TBD

2024: Adam Gristick

Defensive assistant: TBD

2024: Matt Giordano

Special teams coordinator: TBD

2024: Darren Rizzi

Jan. 31: Rizzi, 54, is a favorite of his players but was passed over for the head coach opportunity. It’s a shame because he’s a great coach, and he won’t lack for new chances to work around the league. But the most obvious fit would be for him to reunite with Sean Payton on the Denver Broncos; Payton is who brought him to the Saints after a long run with the Miami Dolphins. Read more here.

Special teams assistant: TBD

2024: Phil Galiano

This would be a very bad cycle to lose Flood or Baker.

Nansen would step right in for PK if that were to happen. Would suck but PK doesn't do much recruiting and Nansen has a lot of skins on the wall.

Milwee, Joseph or Jackson would suck but wouldn't lose too much sleep. Jackson maybe would be a little more frustrating than the other two because we haven't been able to find stability at the WR coach spot.

Banks I just don't think would ever make much sense as a NFL coach. Doesn't fit his biggest strengths.

I said multiple times what a good and important coach Choice is.

Sorry the idea of suggesting the team may have just wanted to go in a different direction, ie a coach more aggressive with RB transfers (which arguably Bobby even hinted at) was akin to suggesting Choice made Blake Lively uncomfortable on the set of some mediocre rom com that it induced a lead paint boomer rage in you that caused you to be too busy angrily mashing the keyboard for the reading comprehension parts of your brain to function.

Apparently reading comprehension is a problem because he said no Texas coach has been offered the job, not that none are in discussions. Highly doubt he singled out a New Orleans defensive job for no reason.

I like to think I pay close attention to the recruiting goings on, as much as I can, anyway.  I trust your information, Sydney, so I have to assume that Harris completely fucked up a recruitment for Baker.  Hope it isn't too late for the two new hires (Joe and Dunson) to provide a firewall between Harris and the coaches.

Losing assistant coaches is natural for good programs. Bama had high turnover during its run but continued to refresh with solid talent.

Just glad we're not in the days of dragging around dead weight like Drew Mehringer, Warehime, Tim Nunez, Mac McWhorter, Bobby Kennedy, etc.
