Thanks, I would have never guessed a coaches kid would be a coach on the field and taking a defensive coordinator job is a step up from safeties coach!

Easy thereā€¦.you donā€™t want that dumbass of the day award!

The very first post I made yesterdayĀ

Here is where I refer to the heat I deservedly took a few weeks back when I initially made the suggestion. You can note that was before his extension/buyout. He left anyway and I pointed out what he said when asked about the 2025 Longhorn running back depth chart.

The very next sentence in my controversial, overly critical assessment of Choice

Hmm. I wonder if maybe Baker said "fuck it" because he got sick of Brandon Harris's shit. That couldn't be a thing, right?

I like to think I pay close attention to the recruiting goings on, as much as I can, anyway.Ā  I trust your information, Sydney, so I have to assume that Harris completely fucked up a recruitment for Baker.Ā  Hope it isn't too late for the two new hires (Joe and Dunson) to provide a firewall between Harris and the coaches.

I surely hope it's not a thing. Losing Baker would suck. Could someone elaborate about issues with Brandon Harris?

Kind of interesting - I spoke with a high school and current friend of Gideon. He said there were "a lot" of better athletes on the Leander team. But, he worked his ass off and studied a lot of film because his dad was the coach. He knew what other teams were going to do and got the defense lined up correctly. So, basically it was true that he was a coach on the field. As for the move, the guy basically said that it was just the right opportunity (money and upward mobility).

Did he tell you about Gideons micro penis? Thatā€™s the only info I have from attending Leander. Other than his mom going off on me in high school for talking about his drop the following week in class. Oops.Ā

Losing assistant coaches is natural for good programs. Bama had high turnover during its run but continued to refresh with solid talent.Ā

Just glad we're not in the days of dragging around dead weight like Drew Mehringer, Warehime, Tim Nunez, Mac McWhorter, Bobby Kennedy, etc.Ā

I could say more but since they are close friends, I don't want to cause any problems between them. Regardless, probably pretty few people here knew his dad was a coach at Leander. And I found it interesting that he was an average athlete at a suburban white school.

Baker is very, very happy at Texas.Ā  I have no idea whether or not he'd leave to go to the NFL, if offered, but he is not disgruntled at Texas.

I didn't comment on her current state,Ā  I just posted her current picture given I figured everyone would wonder what that looks like now.Ā  I fully expect to be dead by 90 so your hypothetical is unlikely to be resolvable.Ā  Also please refer to me as Dr Brainless ShitNugget,Ā  II.Ā  Dad and I didn't waste time in Shitnugget school to have our accomplishments minimized.Ā Ā

I don't know if Zach Barnett has special insight on this or not just in the FootballScoop article posted above he said Orphey was hired as cornerbacks coach.

So Banks and Nansen just had raises/extensions announced by the school. Obviously doesn't guarantee either staying but it's a notable point.

Yes, I think he will be primarily corners coach.Ā

Ā

What is interesting about those raises is they did not announce Terry Joseph extension or raise. OTF reported his contract ends at the end of the month.

Yeah, so that makes me wonder about if Joseph will move to safeties or he'll be replaced? I would have to think he'll move to safeties or else I would imagine something would have come out by now

Or, Orphey could just help Joseph. Just a though exercise.Ā

He's a Texas alum so good shot he has some connection to let him know what they've decided. He's also pretty reliable in my experience.

Gerry mentioned on OTF that people close to the situation have told him Orphey is the Cornerbacks Coach. Iā€™m curious of what that means for the rest of the secondary. Maybe a Joseph departure is also imminent. He & Gideon finally clicked this season.Ā

I dont know that Joseph has any NFL aspirations, but he definitely has ties to New orleans.

I'm all for the guy from Baylor or fOSU Locklyn. Or hell, even the Chargers RB coach. Either way I don't think we'll be disappointed. Just need a guy to go into Alabama, Georgia, and FL

They say Hall is Choice 2.0

Locklyn has credĀ

Chargers RB has NFL which can show kids he can get them tp the league.. Which never hurts.Ā

A bit trivial, but relevant to this topic/ I happened to catch where she turned 89 earlier this past week. Ā So, not yet quite to her 90ā€™s, but hey, hopefully- if she has a decent quality of life- she makes it.

(Paul Wadlington)Ā A Few Thoughts On New DB Coach Mark Orphey

Ā  Reveal hidden contents

One of the few merits of spending many accumulated months in Northern New Jersey working in the pharma industry is that you get to meet actual Rutgers graduates. It turns out that they exist and a handful of them even follow Rutgers sports when theyā€™re not cursing out NY Giants talk radio and hanging out in landfills or whatever it is they do with their children.

Iā€™ll offer what I like about the Orphey hire from my own research and finish with what my old colleague who is an active donor in the program had to say.

I like Orpheyā€™s background. Coaches who come up through places like Montana State, Utah State and Rutgers learn how to coach and develop without talent advantages. Itā€™s important for coaches to learn their craft problem-solving an opponent who has the lionā€™s share of talent. You get creative and you donā€™t just assign outcomes to the players.

Iā€™m actually somewhat suspicious of coaches who have only coached at elite schools, generally have the better talent, and have never tried to figure out how they are going to cover a star receiver with their freshman no star cornerback.

I like youth and ambition. Orphey is under 40, sits at the right junction of youth and experience, understands that Texas is his big break and he will be motivated to do what it takes to succeed and win. Older coaches tend to understandably lose their recruiting edge.

His former head coach Greg Schiano is extremely well-regarded as a developer of young coaches, specifically in the secondary. Specifically in the cornerback part of the secondary. Rutgers has put a number of 3 star DB recruits into the NFL, to include recent 2024 2nd round pick cornerback Max Melton.

Melton was a 5-11, 160 pound athlete from rural New Jersey who ran a 4.6 as a high school senior.

Add in Orpheyā€™s one year finishing school stint with Nick Saban at Bama as a defensive analyst and he got a seminar in preparation and time management as well as some feel for the SEC. He definitely knows Ohio State.

I like infusing new perspectives on the back end. PK prefers handling the front and varied ideas on the back end have proven very valuable to us.

I also like that he moves Joseph back to coaching safeties, which seems to be the current plan.

Hereā€™s the color that my friend had to add:

Orphey has been extended twice in three years at Rutgers. People were coming after him last year
(including better overall jobs than Rutgers with more $$) as Schiano DB coaches are coveted and heā€™s perceived as a young up and comer, but he didnā€™t want to leave unless it was an elite school.

Texas was that elite offer. Every Rutgers fan (and Schiano) shrugged and said,ā€Of course he has to take that.ā€

Rutgers struggled horribly with injuries last year but they also had some DC issues. That DC left to take the head coaching job at UMASS (read: encouraged) and Schiano brought back a former Rutgers DC to be the co-DC. Orphey was ā€œpassed overā€ for that job and he realized that he needed to take the best possible position coaching job for his long term career.

This was not the predicate for his decision ā€“ this is a chance to get back to Texas at a Top 5 program ā€“ but it made it an absolute no brainer.

Orphey is regarded as meticulous and heā€™s good at making connections over time. My friend has interacted with him and said that at first he seems a bit reserved, but you realize that heā€™s actually listening to you and not treating the interaction transactionally.

The overall mentality at Rutgers is extremely blue collar. The premise is that they will outwork, out-prepare and out physical opponents over time. If you get out-talented and lose a rep, thereā€™s no looking to the sideline or finger-pointing. That play is over. Turn the page. A very good mentality for coaching up the cornerback position.

Bonus fact: the Rutgers NIL program is called The Knights Of The Raritan.

If we rebranded as the Paladins of Town Lake, Texas NIL would probably triple.

Ā

Hanging out in landfills lol
