Dude it’s a terrible hire. In 754 years of coaching Akina still cannot teach corners what a zone defense is. And that basically what we run.

Well good news, he ain't going to be coaching the corners at Texas.

he’s not coordinating the fucking defense, he’s coaching the safeties.  it’s actually unreal how many blown-out windsock vaginas post in here.  I thought the site traffic was mostly male but I was mistaken.

I met Akina on a ferry in Sydney harbor when Stanford was playing in Australia in 2017ish.  he was a very nice dude and said he missed UT.  well, now he’s coming back.  hookem.

I like this re-hire.  We were know as DBU under him.  No clue on his recruiting but we have a lot of young coaches and I think he will cement it to the NFL for our young super-stars.  He has a ton of talent to work with. Sark has an open book on coaching, I'll trust on DBU with his choices.

This is a Nansen hire. He was behind the surge last year to bring him on as an analyst. The plan to hire him has been in place for a while, and if Blake would have stayed and Terry still left they would have just hired him to coach CB with Blake as the safety coach. Terry was responsible for the majority of the Two High safety looks you’ve seen at Texas since Sark has been here. PK is a Man/Cover 3 single high guy. Nansen as well. That’s why you saw more cover 3 this past year once Nansen joined the staff. They want to be able to man up more and felt like the old guy was the best teacher of man principles in the secondary. Sark also has talked with Saban who told him, and said on national tv, Texas has to play more man in the backend of the defense.

The part about TJ being responsible for two high makes some things click for me. PK ran a lot of single high at UW and it’s been surprising how little we’ve seen of it here.

Our ability to pass rush next season might be the best we’ve ever seen around here. If we are truly going to major in man coverage then we will be just fine. We have two of the top 10 players in CFB in our front 7. Man coverage will allow them to dominate games.

He's a great teacher of safety play/concepts.

He and McWhorter were also the two biggest gossips on the coaching staff so we should have more insider leaks to look forward to.

My only question with this hire is whether Akina can still develop as well at his age. Maybe that's a dumb question but idk. I assume Nansen would know.

Not worried about recruiting. NIL and other coaches can lead the charge in that area. And there is plenty to sell with Akina's resume.

I mean Coach Larry Johnson at Ohio state is 73 and Ohio states d-line seems to be pretty good as well as get multiple 5 stars and is always up for bet recruiter.

Think they made a big play against Texas I the playoff game but idk I could be wrong.

Lol at Sark trolling you guys.

In Sydney's defense, I was being tongue-in-cheek when I brought up Akina. But it looks like all the wish-casting from oldheads has finally paid off.

That being said, I don't think this is a bad hire. We've got a young up-and-comer as the new CB coach and having a dude like Akina to mentor him for a couple of years is hardly a bad thing. Akina probably can't recruit anymore, but he can certainly still coach. It's not exactly a homerun hire but it still seems reasonable.

Personally, I'm whelmed. Happy for all the old dudes on here though.

I don’t need Schloss hiring Jim lefever.   This hire doesn’t make any sense.  It’s Sark showing us who’s boss

Yes I’m sure Sark thinks of ways to show the surly crowd who is boss and not how he can get over the hump and win a NC. Damn you Sark!

Orphey will have his 3rd Cb drafted out of Rutgers in 3 years after this draft. That is quite an impressive feat.

I don't like the hire, personally. I like everything else this offseason, but the Akina hire is uninspiring. Here's hoping he's still got it, I guess.

Yeah Joseph was hired to run his 2 high look for Muschamp. When Coach Boom backed out we kept the staff we hired for him. That’s why year one was pretty dysfunctional because PK didn’t specialize in cover 2/4. We brought Patterson in teach the quarters/cover 4 and he was able to bridge the gap between PK and the 2 High back end.  We had our best year this past year and we used way more cover 3. That’s where PK is most comfortable.

For this to work recruiting wise Texas better be ready to spend NIL wise and the new CB coach better have a lot of energy on the road and in person. If he is a good recruiter this set up is going to be good for the longhorns.

I’m in between with this hire but I thought the exact same thing about larry Johnson at Ohio st. At least Alina has skins on the wall to sell recruits and players in the team.

I’m sure that matters on the margins, but I think the tier of athlete we’re recruiting to be in the championship conversation knows his worth and is going to prioritize NIL, development, and playing time.

If you were to ask me who the better coach was between Akina and Joseph, I don't think there is any real debate there. For that reason I am fine with it, especially since he isn't being asked to do as much this time around.

Larry Johnson is probably the best DL coach in the history of the sport. Is in the discussion for greatest position coach in the history of the sport.

Absolutely an outlier at his age.

I don't understand the consternation.  I think he brings a wealth of knowledge to the defense ala Sweaty Gary.  A very experienced voice in the meeting rooms.

I see two issues:

1) It’s just kind of retread feel to the hire for many of us. It’s also a position coaching role, as opposed to simply being an advisor.

2) Some people think that anyone over a certain age, I guess maybe 65?, is a worthless fucking drag on society. They either need to sit in their rocking chair, watching Matlock reruns while they eat their tv dinners, or they need to be taken out back and shot, leaving their carcasses to the coyotes and critters.

I’m in group 1, but I agree with your sentiments.

Honest question - what was Akina's track record at Stanford and Arizona after he left Texas? I know Tacario had a good year in 2023 with Akina as Analyst and then regressed some this year. No clue beyond that. How were his Stanford secondaries?

Take heed @SydneyCarton. We are both closer to #2 than we are to the co-eds. I’m just a little closer.
