This is a Nansen hire. He was behind the surge last year to bring him on as an analyst. The plan to hire him has been in place for a while, and if Blake would have stayed and Terry still left they would have just hired him to coach CB with Blake as the safety coach. Terry was responsible for the majority of the Two High safety looks you’ve seen at Texas since Sark has been here. PK is a Man/Cover 3 single high guy. Nansen as well. That’s why you saw more cover 3 this past year once Nansen joined the staff. They want to be able to man up more and felt like the old guy was the best teacher of man principles in the secondary. Sark also has talked with Saban who told him, and said on national tv, Texas has to play more man in the backend of the defense.

Yeah Joseph was hired to run his 2 high look for Muschamp. When Coach Boom backed out we kept the staff we hired for him. That’s why year one was pretty dysfunctional because PK didn’t specialize in cover 2/4. We brought Patterson in teach the quarters/cover 4 and he was able to bridge the gap between PK and the 2 High back end.  We had our best year this past year and we used way more cover 3. That’s where PK is most comfortable.

I see two issues:

1) It’s just kind of retread feel to the hire for many of us. It’s also a position coaching role, as opposed to simply being an advisor.

2) Some people think that anyone over a certain age, I guess maybe 65?, is a worthless fucking drag on society. They either need to sit in their rocking chair, watching Matlock reruns while they eat their tv dinners, or they need to be taken out back and shot, leaving their carcasses to the coyotes and critters.

I’m in group 1, but I agree with your sentiments.

I posted a view that was wildly inconsistent with my past views on the secondary and Akina. In the past, I constantly harped on the need to play more man to man because I believe it’s critical to stop high powered offenses. I do remember Saban saying that during the playoffs.

I also lamented not having a DB  coach who would properly teach the technique we got used to watching when Akina was in charge of the secondary. It was precise and fantastic.

Third, I also made many references in the past at how age discrimination is wrong, not only morally and ethically, but also it’s often a bad business decision.

So why did I react poorly to Akina being the hire? Several reasons. The defense last year was terrific, so I figured they had a scheme they were comfortable with and didn’t need a ‘man’ oriented coach. Maybe they do.

Second, I simply age discriminated against Akina. Whoops. He seemed pretty old the last time I saw and heard him. I don’t know that we are getting Fangio. Maybe he’s fine. I also remember him not being able to deal with a scheme that mixed man and zone.  Also, a 68 year old guy is going to turn off some recruits. I guess the rest of the staff can pick up the slack.

So I don’t love the hire, but it probably won’t be a disaster either.

Take heed @SydneyCarton. We are both closer to #2 than we are to the co-eds. I’m just a little closer.

Well, the difference between you, me, and apparently Duane Akina is that I'm hoping to be able to NOT work well before Akina's age. So I'm a little less worried about #2 myself.

And I'd point out that my post isn't criticizing the hire nearly as much as it's criticizing the posters that inevitably can't help by pine for all the old coaches that they see as representing some Golden Era of UT. Akina certainly gets that love, but we had people here at one point asking Charlie Strong to look into Greg Robinson and/or Dick Tomey, and Tomey might have already been dead. I laugh almost as equally for people talking about bringing back Carrington or Samples.

If Sark has a well thought out plan for this, well ok, lets give it a shot. But a lot of people are making a lot of assmptions we don't know shit about, like "Akina isn't going to be asked to hit the road recruiting." And if that IS even true, people aren't asking if there's going to be a hit because a player's position coach won't even recruit them consistently.

But to reiterate, I'm not laughing at the hire, although I'm from Missouri. But, to paraphrse Slider, I am laughing at some of you dickheards.

I don't understand the consternation.  I think he brings a wealth of knowledge to the defense ala Sweaty Gary.  A very experienced voice in the meeting rooms.

Akina is not near the level of Gary in coordinating a defense or as a defensive mind. That has been proven in Akina's history, most recently in his brief DC job at Arizona. Arizona went from DFEI #24 under Nansen to #103 under Akina the following year. He is a great DB coach. He can coach technique with anyone in the profession. I trust him on the micro, not the macro level.

"Uninspired?" "Retread?" That's like complaining about getting to fuck Ana de Armas if you already got to fuck her ten years ago.

Truly an apples to apples comparison if there ever was one. A 68 year old man and a 35 year old woman. 25-35 arguably being the range of the prime of a woman's life/beauty, bookended. And one of the most beautiful women in the world during the last 10 years. Definitely the same thing as this:

Veteran assistant coach Duane Akina a 'decent commitment' to join Brent Brennan's staff at Arizona

Also, lets not ignore the logical fallacy that your statement presupposes that his tenure here will already be a success when that has yet to be determined.

3) He fucked over our defense when he undermined Manny Diaz and refused to teach the DBs what Diaz wanted to run. Their post-2012 career trajectories clearly show that Diaz was in the right and Akina was in the wrong. I don't see how you can trust him after that but I guess Nansen thinks differently. We'll see.

Look I don’t know if Alina is the right hire or not or the best hire or not but Sark has done a damn fine job of putting a fantastic product on the field.

What I do know is we’re going to skull fuck everyone and imprison their wimmenz and burn down their couches.

It's hilarious that y'all will call me stupid when y'all can't even figure out how basic analogies work.

Nobody is saying that Akina LOOKS like this:

This thread got me thinking and I thought to myself, let me look up hot bitches over 60 so i can post the link and laugh at these assholes.  After a few hyperlinks of viewing beautiful women over 60, I've changed my position.  Fuck all you that think 60 is young, its old as fuck.  Google those old whores yourself.  Damn it!

Everything I've heard is that Nansen calls the shots in the secondary.  Akina is here to coach technique and serve as the
Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament (it's y'all's fault for conflating Duane with Ana).  Orphey is going to absorb Akina's knowledge and synthesize it with his own, which by all accounts is top-flight.  And Gerry mentioned that he has run into Akina on the recruiting trail the last couple of years and nobody was mocking him.  Let's wait until we have a legitimate beef before we all turn into little bitches.  I would have preferred Linguist or Sanders, but I feel 100% confident that our secondary is in better hands than in the recent past.

I just disagreed with the comp of Akina to Gary Patterson’s contributions joining the staff. I did not pontificate on the hire of Akina. Your opening paragraph seems like you agree. Not sure what triggered the second paragraph

It’s more likely Tom Cruise is fucking Duane Akina than Ana de Armas.

Absolutely an outlier at his age.

Do you not know who Akina is??

what kinda Texas fan are you?

Akina is probably one of the best DB coaches to coach at the college level. Go look at the players he’s put in the league.  He’s definitely top 5 off production alone

As I remember it, the defense got markedly better with Robinson within a couple of games.  He taught the LBs to do stuff like read keys, take on blocks, play your gap, stupid shit like that.  Previously dudes were just running  free through vacated holes where stunters had been.

Yes we know who he has coached and such. Now do the same for Larry Johnson and you see that Johnson is on a whole other level.

It's pretty clear you don't know who Larry Johnson is. 16 defensive players of the year or defensive linemen of the year in the last 25 years in the b10 is outstanding. He's an incredible position coach and didn't have to

Akina is an incredible coach historically. He just isn't Larry Johnson.

probably shouldnt hire a position coach that is older than Bobby Burton. We need some standard. Would love to have him as an analyst.

Isn't Larry Johnson at Pedo like 73 or something? He seems to be doing fine. And Akina has put something like 30-40 DB'S in the league between Texas, Stanford, and Arizona with 4 Thorpe award winners. I'm pretty he doesn't have dementia and can remember how to coach.

This isn't being snarky to you, just saying I think the dude can still coach.

Comparing Akina and Larry Johnson's resumes is some really pedantic shit. Both are stellar.

Heard Burton and Babers talking about Akina. He had put over 40 players in the league by 2022. There was apparently a 10-year stretch when every starter at corner under Akina played in the NFL. Some of the very best DBs I've ever seen at Texas were coached by this guy.

Yes, he's 68. Speaking of Larry Johnson, that dude is still doing it at 73. Texas' staff is going to change a lot going forward. Hiring a coach who is going to be here long-term would be great, but it's just not going to happen all the time. Akina can still coach. We don't need a coach for the next ten years. We need one now. Because we are in a championship window. Now.
