As much as it pains me, I'm rooting for the Irish. I just can't bring myself to root for Ohio State, even though I really dislike Notre Dame. My trip to Columbus in '05 made me root against the Buckeyes for life.

Historically, I always root against the Irish.  I have a soft spot in my heart for Ohio State.  This general feeling is complicated by the fact that I really, really like the Notre Dame coach, and I really, really detest Day.

Shut up Lou Holtz. Notre Dame hasn’t won a national championship since 1988. Those championships 50 years, and more, ago have no impact on this game. I don’t hate Notre Dame. I don’t root for Notre Dame. I’m not a Buckeye either.

That said, I think if Ohio State runs the ball for a bit over 100 yards they should win. I don’t know if Notre Dame can stop both facets of their offense. The Notre Dame offensive line is beaten up too. That’s huge. I think it will be a very fun game and I would not be surprised if Notre Dame won as they seem to have “it”. I do expect Ohio State to win.

And again, shut up Lou Holtz.

It will likely be tOSU in a multi score win but if history continues the last two national championship runner ups both beat Texas in a close game some point during the year.

2022- TCU beats Texas 17-10

2023- Washing Beats Texas 37-31

2024- tOSU beats Texas 28-14 (effectively another 1 score game outside of the fumble)

This is unrelated to actual matchup but its a quirky stat that should give ND fans some hope.

I have a sideline jacket/pullover Lou wore at ND, late 80 to early 90s. Houston Christian (private school) fund raiser, But anyways he was a shit at Arkansas, but I grew to love him and ND during my teenage years (80s). Dad would always tell me back then that you can still love the man, but not the program. Didn’t make sense back then either.

It was Lou Holtz’s final season at Notre Dame and we were playing out there. The rumors had already started about Holtz being pushed out in favor of Bob Davie.

In the post-game press conference writers were asking for comments and I will give Holtz credit for one of the funniest responses I have ever heard from a coach.

He said, and I am paraphrasing a bit, “if you want to know something you don’t ask the monkey, you ask the organ grinder”.

Now, I must go out and shovel snow, ugh.

Why do you “really, really detest Day?” He’s a really nice guy. What has he done that you detest? You can say that he was in over his head starting his first head coaching job at a place like OSU but that’s not a reason to “detest” him. Before his outburst against Lou Holtz after last year’s game in South Bend, what did he ever say that anyone could even criticize?

It’s been kind of interesting watching fans of other teams develop their hatred of Ryan Day. They hate Ohio State so they have to hate the coach but Day was a total unknown to them when he got the job and didn’t give them any material to use to justify their hatred. So they mostly attacked his hair. You say you have a soft spot for OSU so what gives? Why the hate? It can’t be based on his personality unless you’re a bad judge of character. If it’s based on performance then I think “detest” is a really strong word. I could call for his firing because he can’t beat Michigan, win a Big Ten Championship, or a National Championship, goals 1, 2, and 3 (in that order) for a Buckeye coach. But I wouldn’t “detest” him. He’s a good and decent person. He’d just be in the wrong job

Thank you! Lou was so full of “one liners” that could create a book. He visited my Dad/HS my junior year, actually looking at another BMT area player, but I asked him what it would take to join a program like his? Straight to my face in Dad’s office, Lou said when you go to bed each night this year, one pray first, then tell your Mom to grab your feet and Dad grab your arms and pull, pull, pull!

I'm holding my nose and rooting for Ohio State.

The last thing I want is Notre Dame truly returning to the national stage, coming into Texas for recruits, and having their mythology shoved down our throats for the foreseeable future. And believe me, their Touchdown Jesus / holier than thou / higher admissions standards / divine right / win one for the Gipper bullshit is the absolute worst in all of college football. And while I do like Freeman, I don't like him enough to endure that shit again. It was awful to listen to that crap in the 1980s. They were Duke basketball on steroids of college football. If they lose again, and hopefully in embarrassing fashion, they revert to their current status as an afterthought who can't really match up athletically and a product of a weak schedule and injuries to their opponents (i.e., Carson Beck).

On the other hand, an Ohio State win doesn't really change much. They are what they are, no matter what happens tonight. I mean, fuck those guys and their fans, but they are still going to be a top 5 program win or lose. And maybe a blowout makes us look better as the clear second best team in the nation, for whatever that is worth.... which ain't much.

Go Notre Dame

Football Jesus bring one home

Maybe it's better this way because it sounded like Disney espin wants to give the first black HC a natty. I'm cool with the refs fucking ohio state at every moment of this game and lighting ryan day's fake beard on fire.

Notre Dame has a very narrow path to the win.  Ohio State simply has fewer flaws.

That said…

ND wins games by dragging you into the mud and sitting on your head until you die.  Michigan does the same thing, and when we played them, they won. ND had it in them to do the same.

seeing a theme here, but the next NFL game isn't until Sunday. How is it affecting the CFP game today?

There is no interest in the build up as the last week has been building to this past weekend's divisional rounds, then there were the past two days of divisional rounds itself, today the game has to compete with recap of divisional rounds and tomorrow it will be recapped some before it is back to divisional round post mortem and championship weekend preview.

Even the semifinals quickly got drowned by Wildcard weekend talk.

Having the championship game on a Monday for so long really makes me not really care. I got shit going on and work tomorrow. If its Friday or Saturday night I'll probably crack a beer and watch. I doubt I will tonight, maybe late in the game if its close.

What’s the problem with the beard? He’s one hairy motherfucker. When he shaved every day, he had 5 o’clock shadow by lunch time. If he didn’t have the beard, people would criticize him for that. It’s pretty transparent.

It was a joke.

I think he uses Walt Frazier’s Just For Men. Keep it natural. Go grey if it is to be.

I would take Marcus Freeman as the next Cowboys coach and sleep like a baby tonight.

Hook’em!!!

You sure about that?

He is the coach that had ten men on the field against Ohio State last year on the most critical play of the game

Most ND insiders I’ve read seem to think he’s just a great recruiter.

Go Irish

Can we not get better locations than ATL for hosting some of the sports most meaningful games (e.g. the SEC championship, Peach, and National Championship)?  In addition to the downtown area being a shit hole, we've taken the pageantry of college football on the biggest stage and shoved it into a deserted shopping mall known as the Georgia World Center.  It looks like the Dallas boat show without the boats.

Out of the schools I really can't stand Ohio State and Notre Dame are both up there with USC & Oklahoma rounding out the Mt Rushmore. Freeman at least called a hilarious play against Georgia and so I guess Go Irish but this is the polar opposite of last year with Michigan and Washington where I was cool with both schools eben though we choked on applesauce vs UW twice.
