Hot take here, but Larry is a better player than Weaver. Much better point guard and a better defender. When Weaver comes back, he will eat into Pope and Larry’s minutes and I don’t think that is a good thing. Also Pope and Larry are great FT shooters. Weaver… isn’t.

I do love Weaver’s hustle and energy, and the way he hits the boards. But I don’t think we are going to win that much if he is getting 25 mpg. Hate to say it because he is probably my favorite player on the team.

Fair points. Weaver's edge is his utterly fearless play late in games. I trust him more than anyone else to get his hands on a crucial loose ball, keep a rebound alive or draw a charge. He's this team's Silas Bolden, and I sense the other guys feed off that.

I was noodling on this postgame as well but I think you went maybe a tad strong. Weaver can still be a very valuable member of this team. At the same time, like you said, his absence has potentially helped us figure some shit out.

I'm not as sold on Larry as you are. I've liked him in spurts this season. He and Pope both have a bad habit of dribbling the air out of the ball.

You have a good eye for the game - I think you and I differ a bit here and there in our evals but I think we both agree that this team has enough talent on it to put a decent season together.

went to the game last night. it is insane how many of our possessions are one guy pounding the air out of the ball while four guys stand around watching, inevitably resulting in some late shot clock, pull up jumper. our offense only works at all because pope/tre/kaluma is the best three-man scoring tandem since j’covan brown, jordan hamilton, and damion james. make no mistake about it, this offense is fundamentally one of the worst we’ve run in recent memory. it’s just as maddening and ineffectual as any typical shaka offense.

I like Pope and Larry—two totally different PGs. Larry is a true point guard who really gets everyone involved (assists), plays defense, and gets the offense started. At times, it looks like both are over-dribbling, but most of the time, it seems they are waiting for everyone to get set in the offense.  I also think Larry is probing trying to see who’s open and that may get him in difficult situations at time. Pope is a shooting PG, plays well off the ball which gives him more opportunity to shoot. Not as good on defense. All in all the team had a solid game, played hard and won.

Don’t disagree with your sentiment but there was nothing solid about that game. Most boring game I have ever attended. For long stretches both teams were terrible.
We did outplay them in the final three minutes of the game. I do give them credit for that.

it took us like 9 minutes to get a fg. i also distinctly remember shedrick hitting two ft in the 2H and i looked up and said, “those two fts just gave us 11 points for the half.” i just looked it up:

IMG_2585.thumb.jpeg.ae0e883ec5cdabc9028e00cfa918cc18.jpeg

those points came after the u8 timeout. so, zero FG for the first ~8-9 minutes of the 1H, and 9 points in the first 12 minutes of the 2H. these numbers accurately reflect how ugly the game was. and i’ll say this: if RT had the pre-Beard student sections then the arena would have been 25% full. that is without a doubt CB’s legacy at Texas: he created real deal student excitement and loyalty. without the students there last night the place would have been a mausoleum.
