The wild card here is Arch as he is going to be a massive upgrade over Quinn who has held us back the last couple of years. His escapability can make up for the deficiencies and lack of cohesion on the OL. Unclear if Neto, Hutson, and Campbell will be false start machines.

As for TE it looks like a bunch of JAGs with Washington, Randle, and Shannon - none of whom have ever caught a pass at the college level. Might be better off running more 4 and 5 WR sets with French and Lockett.

Neither have Ffrench or Lockett

We're 103rd in the country in returning production this year. That's worse than every SEC team other than Georgia (105th) and Ole Miss (113th).

For comparison, blOU is 10th in the country in returning production. A&M is 6th, and Florida is 18th.

You honestly think OU is going to be better than us this year?

Texas used one tight end in the passing game last year. Ignoring the fact that we will likely add a veteran tight end in the transfer portal, one good tight end surrounded by jags was literally our tight end situation last year. Unless you think Washington is a jag in which case you are fucking idiot and should probably stop worrying about football.

The turnover thing is interesting. Normally it would be ridiculous to think a 1st time starter would have less turnovers than a 3 year starter in his last year, but Quinn had 17 in 14 games. He also had some really costly turnovers. I can see Arch having more of the 40 yards downfield type interceptions, which are not as costly.

Exactly!

Arch will make plenty of mistakes. We saw the rawest version of him vs. ULM and he was sloppy. The great news is - even though Miss St. sucked - he played fantastic the following week against them. Great throws and decision making. He learns and improves.

I admit that my confidence in this year's offense is because I think Quinn generally sucked. So many limitations with him at QB. I mean, how many off-schedule explosive plays did he make in 3 years at Texas? Not many. Probably a very low percentage compared to most QBs if there was a stat for it. Sark had to scheme so many one read throws for him too. We haven't had many QB passing phenoms at Texas, so I think it's hard for some of our fans to imagine what is possible.

Assuming the OL can be at least average, we will be lighting up the scoreboard. If I'm wrong and Arch & the offense struggle, I'll be here to eat crow.

We're not close to done in the portal. We will probably add 3-5 starter-ish caliber players. Like at say TE.

"You want get paid well, live in Austin, and catch passes from Arch Manning?" is a pretty compelling pitch to any TE or WR.

Upgrading at the most important position in sports might be good for something.

I largely agree. We didnt have a healthy Ewers and he was a liability in some games. Our running game underperformed and depth was spotty, especially with two backs out and two fumblers. Oline also got banged up at the tackle position. And Bond (who I think was the best receiver we’ve had in a long time before he got hurt) was limited most of the season. On offense we didnt reach our potential and at times it was a shitshow. The same thing could happen again, but if we keep Manning upright I like our chances.

I think the key this year is the running game. It needs to be better. Less 3rd and longs, less obvious dropbacks. Keep Manning clean.

With a QB who isn't a statue and has mobility even if run game is the same we are better off. Having to run an offense that can't stretch the field made it so much easier on defenses in stopping our run last season. You saw it most games where defenses didn't respect us deep.

Texas' Roster Release + Week 1 of Practice

The Texas Football 2025 Spring roster has been updated, creating one of my favorite days of the year when I can sit and scroll down the website while observing weight gains, number changes and acclimating my brain with the early enrollees.

A few nuggets, I wanted to share from the roster update that I have yet to mention elsewhere.

– CB Wardell Mack ran with the first team at STAR on Tuesday. Is that a surprise? Perhaps. But to see Mack listed at 212 pounds on the roster update is a tremendous sign for his ability to play near the LOS.

– On the flipside, CB Manny Muhammad is listed at 178 pounds, down quite a bit from his listing on the fall 2024 roster at 190.

– I was shocked to see RB CJ Baxter listed at 230 pounds. I wonder if that will be amended by the fall or if that is truly what weight he is at currently.

– I have noticed Texas likes its linebackers in one of two molds. A bigger body that pushes close to 240 pounds, and a leaner body that closes in around twenty pounds lighter.

Anthony Hill Jr. | 6–3, 237

Brad Spence | 6–2, 238

Bo Barnes | 6–1, 246

Group two.

Liona Lefau | 6–1, 218

Ty'Anthony Smith | 6–1, 220

Jonathan Cunningham | 6–2, 190

Worth mentioning that Trey Moore is listed as a LB, not an EDGE. He is listed at 6–3 and 246 pounds.

– RB Quintrevion Wisner is listed at 194 pounds, though I remember Tashard Choice telling reporters in Atlanta in December that Wisner was playing at 202 pounds. I was hoping to see a number closer to 210, but perhaps that will come in the summer months.

– Lightest Players on the Team

163 – Aaron Butler

176 – Santana Wilson

178 – Malik Muhammad

178 – Daylan McCutcheon

179 – Caleb Chester

182 – KJ Lacey

– Heaviest Players on the Team:

365 – Josiah Sharma

353 – Nick Brooks

352 – Cole Brevard

352 – Connor Stroh

350 – Travis Shaw

Comparison of 2024 DL to Projected 2025 DL

From a pure mass perspective, I don't think Texas will be hurting when it comes to bodies on the interior of the defensive line. Now, mass does not correlate to good play nor production, but it is worth pointing out how large the Texas defensive line is.

2024 Group – Alfred Collins, Vernon Broughton, Jermayne Lole, Bill Norton, Alex January
Average weight of 318 pounds.
Average height of 6'4.6"

2025 Group – Cole Brevard, Travis Shaw, Alex January, Hero Kanu
Average weight of 332
Average height of 6'4.5"

That of course does not include 365-pound Josiah Sharma and 327-pound Myron Charles. Good to see 317 pounds listed next to MelvinHills III as well.

As for the interior of the Offensive Line:

2024 Group – Hayden Conner (314 at Combine), Jake Majors (305 at Combine), DJ Campbell (330) ... average weight of 316.67

2025 Group – Neto Umeozulu (327), Cole Hutson (315), DJ Campbell (322)... average weight of 321.33

***

A spring ball nugget.

– EDGE Colton Vasek is out of a sling. His status to get back on the field this spring remains up in the air, but a step forward in his recovery.

– Freshman DL Justus Terry battled a strained hamstring on day one, the reason for his limitation in practice.

We expect Arch to be an upgrade over Quinn in general, but what if he’s more turnover prone in his first year as a starter than Quinn? I think he’ll be better overall than 2024 Quinn.

Some growing pains will likely happen.

I expect Arch to light up Ohio State, sparking a media frenzy, then he’ll come back down to earth by the middle of the season. I hope he regains momentum by the end of the season to give us a strong shot at the playoffs, if not making a deep run in them.

The defense will almost certainly be the strength of our team again this year.

Quinn threw 12 picks last year

Wishful thinking. Arch is definitely a gunslinger right now, he’s also an athletic gunslinger who is more accurate downfield than Quinn.

His first pick against ULM was one of the worst you’ll ever see. He also threw a few more into coverage by trying to thread the needle when it really didn’t have to.

His first interception in his first start ever is the worse you will ever see? What about Quinn’s duck against Arizona st with 6 minutes remaining that allowed them to claw back into the game as a 3rd year starter?

The truth about Bond is closer to a cautionary tale about the dangers of portal recruiting/expectations than a lament about how hurt he was throughout the season.  Watch as his NFL draft stock continues to fall.

I think Quinn excelled at a few hard to quantify things. On his one-reads, quick throws, etc., he was exceptional not a just hitting the guy but putting it in the right spot to allow for receivers to maintain momentum, keep their eyes up, and get downfield/make guys miss. It's easy to say all quarterbacks can do that, but I would be willing to bet a deep analysis would put him in the top tier of that particular skill. And I think that's part of why Sark schemed so heavily that direction (along with very fast and shifty skill guys). I also saw him make a bunch of reads for developing downfield plays that most QBs at the college level don't see/anticipate well enough to make the play. His ability to hit those shots, though, were up and down, luckily more up than down this last year (4th and 13 woo!).

To me, his MAJOR flaw is navigating the pocket. It's like he plays with blinders on. Can't feel pressure, doesn't step up well, doesn't escape well, and to your point it means he gave himself very few opportunities to create, and walked into sacks WAY too often. If he learns that at the next level, I believe he has the rest of the skillset to be a creative, off-platform guy. But he never did in 3 years here, so I'll believe it when I see it.

This is a good post.  I agree with this take.

Unbelievable amount of hand-wringing and worry-bead pawing going on in here.

Don't give a fuck about "returning production" or such-like bullshit. Inventing totally meaningless stats because some others have linemen coming back, who started last year... but who wouldn't have made the two-deep at Texas last year OR this year? Sheerest stupidity.

All we really need to do is be in the top twelve by December 1st. If tOSU, UGa, and Notre Dame male it back to semifinals, or not, I don't care. I think we'll be there.

Anyone who thinks we aren't going to be able to play at that level needs to fuck right off. The only way we don't is to endure a massive wave of injuries - and that's so fucking unlikely that there's no sense in even considering it.

D is going to be as good, if not even better. Passing game is going to be better. Ground game is going to be better, if only because having Arch's running ability takes at least one Defender off the table and give RBs more room. Special teams? If it isn't markedly worse than last year, we'll be fine... but I suspect, I expect, it'll improve.

We're good, and we're going to be a lot of fun to watch.

Bobby Burton

Some early returns through two days of practice based on what I've been told.

- If you're asking if any true freshmen are standing out through the first two days, I'm told there are several. "The depth" of the freshman class is "elite" was the first thing passed on to me.

But, individually, there is one freshman who is really doing some nice things very early.

According to a source, Kade Phillips, the cornerback from Greater Houston, is showing some truly elite signs just two practices into spring ball. I'm told it's not just his length and make-up speed, but some intangibles as well.

I know it's early, but Texas may have caught lightning in a bottle. He's been that impressive, in the same way that Ryan Wingo was a year ago at this time.

Nick Brooks also received a comment in that regard. The Atlanta area OL is already seeing some run at second-team left tackle just two days into spring camp.

- This should come as little surprise to those who follow Texas closely, but the size/speed/athleticism combo of Wingo are really separating him as a playmaker for 2025.

- It's also important to note that part of spring camp will be used by the Texas staff to assess what pieces of the puzzle Texas will need to address in the transfer portal which opens on April 15.

We've talked at length previously about likely needs at WR, TE and DL.

But I will remind everyone, Sark is not playing just to hold serve right now. If the Texas staff sees someone in the portal, at just about any position, that they think can help them win games, they're going to go after them.

Sark, I was told, wants to go after a championship every season. That includes 2025.

- One quick Arch Manning update: unsurprisingly, he's looked like a first-year starter at times and like a multi-year NFL vet at others. In other words, his continued development will be what we hope to hear the most about over the next couple of weeks. In some ways, as Arch goes, most likely so will the Texas offense.

Fair enough. But Gerry Hamilton has been talking him up all offseason, and if we hit on a guy out of Grayson HS that could pay off big time.

I just got done with the all 22 on the Ohio st game from JT O’Sullivan and his main critique during the game was Quinn’s pocket presence. There were a couple of plays where he navigated it well but most of the time he was making the wrong call when to sit or climb. From the film it seemed like he climbs too much at times and would be better off sitting a second or two more and stepping into the throw. If Quinn can see it then he’s okay but if it’s a feel thing he’s going to continue to struggle. I don’t think it’s a reps thing at this point with him.

Quinn created a lot of division in the Texas fan base, but I have no doubt in my mind he will be the one to unite the Cowboys fan base in finally moving on from Dak. I’d rather see Quinn out there making bonehead plays than Dak has for the last 9 years.
