Week 3 of spring football begins tomorrow morning as the Longhorns take the field for practice No. 7.

A few nuggets over the weekend that I picked up on the mini scrimmage/team period from practice No. 6.

***

– WR Daylan McCutcheon found the end zone over the middle of the field during the team setting. Route running continues to be a strength for the early enrollee who has continued to see time with the first unit.

– A pair of nuggets on the RB room.

RB Christian Clark has been making some noise this spring after recovering from an Achilles injury last fall. The staff is keeping Clark pretty limited in the live situations so far this spring, but other than that, Clark has consistently earned praise for his cutting ability off the Achilles. Should there be no setbacks, and I am knocking on wood as I type, Clark will have a role this fall.

Another RB mentioned was early enrollee James Simon who got loose a couple of times Thursday night. Simon is listed at 205 pounds on the Texas roster, but he is probably closer to 210 and carrying it well.

– Two sources indicated RT Andre Cojoe continues to be a positive surprise this spring. The battle between Cojoe and Baker is legit. One source indicated that they believed the job would be pretty quickly decided for Baker, though Cojoe has given Baker a run for his money and continues to piece things together.

so....all our hopes and dreams rest on Clark and Baxter to be ready and fabulous this year....I am drunk on the koolaide, but when  either of those injuries are often career ending injuries, I may have to start attending the KA meetings for a while.

Yeah, WTF? I think we all want more options, but it’s bizarre to forget the previous season’s leading rusher, who busted his ass and overachieved, even hitting the 1,000 yard mark (granted in an extended season).

You also have to “prop-up” the 2nd/3rd teammates in the media, for their attitude of participation in the future, or they might get enticed to hit the portal.

Many of our now 2nd teamers (both sides) could immediately start for lesser programs.

No just go a couple posts down and (IMO) the rationale of “propping up” 2/3 teamers to the media is a way to keep them from looking into today’s portal world.

Steve Sarkisian speaks on Texas Pass Catches (Tuesday)

For the first time since meaningful spring football has been played, media was able to hear from Steve Sarkisian in-person Tuesday morning.

Of the laundry list of questions hoping to be checked off today, perhaps there was no bigger concern at the moment than at wide receiver. With no Ryan Wingo or DeAndre Moore running routes this spring, Texas currently does not have a career reception on the other end of any Arch Manning pass this spring – a stat I am sure many of y'all are tired of hearing about.

But alas, so updates on the early enrollees and the wide receiver group in general were made available from Sarkisian.

"It's good for some of the young players," Sarkisian said. "Where, they are running with the 1's and the 2's, whether it is Jaime (Ffrench), it's Kaliq (Lockett), it's Parker (Livingstone), it is Daylan McCutcheon. These guys are just getting some valuable, valuable reps."

OnTexasFootball had reported earlier in the spring the first group of receivers to trot out at the start of week two of spring practice included Livingstone-Ffrench-McCutcheon. For the most part, that group has remained steadfast.

Aaron Butler, Michael Terry III and Kaliq Lockett have remained with the 2nd unit for much of the spring, with some time sprinkled in with the first group.

All in all, the youth and inexperience of the wide receiver group is something Texas will have to work through, especially without DeAndre Moore (toe) and Ryan Wingo (hamstring). Moore has been seen on a scooter with a boot on his foot to protect the toe injury he has been nursing.

Per Sarkisian on Tuesday, both Wingo and Moore are beginning to work back to on-field exercises, but are not close to a return. However, Sarkisian is not worried about not have the two on the field for the spring season.

"I am not in a real rush," Sarkisian said about getting the two projected starters back on the field. "I know who DeAndre Moore is and I know what he is made of. He has had good rapport with Arch from last season when Arch played. I know who Ryan Wingo is. He was having a really good spring before he tweaked his hammy and he will be back. I am not concerned with those guys."

Sarkisian was also asked about whether or not a portal addition would be top of mind when the window opens at the wide receiver position.

"It’s not a secret that we’ll look to the portal, but I’m not going to take a guy that’s just a number.”

Sarkisian also referenced to making sure the right fit needs to be available for the Longhorns to pursue in the portal. In other words, it won't just be a guy who plays the position. A portal addition must be an impact guy that fits what the program is about.

If and when Texas does get active in the portal this spring, a veteran option with production would be the best guess. I will expound on that closer to the portal window as we start to project where Texas might be making additions to the roster.

But Sarkisian made it clear elsewhere in the availability that this will be the youngest Texas Football team he has coached in his five years in Austin.

For now, not much will change.

The spring portal window opens for 10 days, beginning on April 16 and runs until April 25.

So many people have DM'd me asking questions and even buying tickets.

Here are the answers to your queries:

@South Austin, no, you cannot ask Bella Hadid for a used pair of her panties. Don't forget that while in Playa, we represent Surly Horns, and anything we do there reflects on the organization as a whole.

@RomaVicta to answer your question, the age of consent in Mexico is 16 in some areas, so let's be respectful of local traditions and customs. For more info, consult your Mexican consulate or a lawyer.

@Huckleberry, if you sign up for the Jungle Excursion With Antonio Brown, there is no guarantee that he will accompany us. In fact, the FyreFest people told me on some days, 'the dude acts fucking nuts.'

@Helobious unfortunately, there are no refunds on your Fyrefest 2 tickets, but please don't worry. The festival is a 100% sure-thing. Trust me.

Texas is seven practices into spring football, meaning they are essentially at halftime.

We have learned a lot of what's going on in spring ball, but there remains plenty of unknowns for the second half of spring football. However, based off of what we know, I wanted to give a projected 2-deep at each position for the midway point.

***

Offense

Quarterback

Rs. Sophomore Arch Manning

Rs. Freshman Trey Owens

Pretty cut and clean at the quarterback position for Steve Sarkisian and AJ Milwee. Texas has its starter for the fall. Of course, early enrollee KJ Lacey is running third.

Running Back

Junior Tre Wisner

Sophomore Jerrick Gibson – OR – Rs. Freshman Christian Clark

With CJ Baxter still recovering from his knee injury from fall camp, the Longhorns are rolling with Tre Wisner once again as their lead back. Sarkisian confirmed it at the media availability on Tuesday as well, Wisner is the guy. Gibson has the edge over Clark as he gets back to 100% as well. Gibson has filtered in with the first unit often, and Clark has received a solid amount of reps with the 2's. Early enrollees James Simon and Rickey Stewart are growing into their own.

Wide Receiver

X – Rs. Freshman Parker Livingstone

Z – Freshman Jaime Ffrench

H – Freshman Daylan McCutcheon

and

X – Freshman Michael Terry III

Z – Freshman Kaliq Lockett

H – Freshman Aaron Butler

Specifics on the X, Z, H are subject to change, but this is where the reps have been split mostly at practice thus far. Kaliq Lockett was also mentioned by Steve Sarkisian as someone who is running with the first team often. I have not heard that as much for Aaron Butler, however he will get his looks as the spring continues.

Tight End

Rs. Sophomore Spencer Shannon

Freshman Emaree Winston

Texas is banged up. No Jordan Washington for the time being, otherwise he would be your No. 1 option here. Fortunately, this provides great looks for Spencer Shannon for the first time in his career with the first team. Nick Townsend arrives in the summer and will make noise as well.

Offensive Line

LT1 – Rs. Sophomore Trevor Goosby

LT2 – Freshman Nick Brooks

LG1 – Junior Neto Umeozulu

LG2 –Rs. Freshman Nate Kibble – OR – Rs. Sophomore Jaydon Chatman

C1 – Senior Cole Hutson

C2 – Rs. Freshman Daniel Cruz

RG1 – Senior DJ Campbell

RG2 – Rs. Freshman Nate Kibble

RT1 – Sophomore Brandon Baker

RT2 – Rs. Sophomore Andre Cojoe – OR – Freshman Nick Brooks

For the time being, that's where we stand on the offensive line. Plenty of battles on the offensive line as well. Nick Brooks is getting looks at both sides of the ball, a great sign early. Daniel Cruz has been someone we have heard plenty about making noise and Nate Kibble had a tremendous redshirt year and is pushing at both guard spots.

****

Defense

EDGE

Sophomore Colin Simmons

Rs. Freshman Zina Umeozulu

Senior Ethan Burke – OR – Senior Trey Moore

Freshman Lance Jackson – OR – Freshman Justus Terry

Obviously with Trey Moore getting reps at linebacker, it changes a bit of what Texas is doing off the edge. No Colton Vasek means Zina Umeozulu also gets some notable key reps in the first and second units as well. But both new early enrollees are getting some key snaps as well against Nick Brooks and Andre Cojoe, both will payoff in the long run.

Interior DL

Senior Cole Brevard & Sophomore Alex January

Senior Travis Shaw & Senior Hero Kanu

I wanted to show the interior defensive line in a duo look. Expect a lot of snaps for Alex January and Cole Brevard in 2025, they are your No. 1 guys on the interior with Brevard manning the nose. Travis Shaw is limited with a lingering knee, but will be a key piece next fall over the nose as well. Will be interesting to see who Texas adds out of the portal, as well as what Myron Charles and Josiah Sharma bring to the table.

Linebacker

MIKE1 – Junior Anthony Hill Jr.

MIKE2 – TyAnthony Smith

WILL1 – Junior Liona Lefau – OR – Senior Trey Moore

WILL2 – Senior Brad Spence

Again, the movement of Trey Moore makes things really interesting for the Horns at the second level. What kind of pass rush and identification issues can the Horns provide with their weapons at the linebacking position. TyAnthony Smith, Brad Spence each bring individual skillsets as well, but they complement each other well.

STAR

Rs. Freshman Wardell Mack – OR – Junior Jelani McDonald

Sophomore Jordon Johnson-Rubell – OR – Sophomore Ryan Niblett

Lots of bodies getting cross-trained here at the STAR position. Wardell Mack had been getting the first-team looks this spring with Jelani McDonald back at safety due to some injury issues back deep. Will be really intersting to see if Ryan Niblett brings anything to this room.

Cornerback

Junior Malik Muhammad

Junior Warren Roberson – OR – Freshman Kade Phillips

Senior Jaylon Guilbeau

Sophomore Kobe Black – OR – Rs. Freshman Santana Wilson

Plenty of bodies right now in the cornerback room as well, so much so, that Steve Sarkisian called it the "best-looking" room on the 40 Acres currently. Given the names above, it is hard to disagree. The length and speed of the guys listed on the two deep are tremendous. Texas might not be super experienced here, but the skillset is great and with Guilbeau moving outwide, necessary experience as well.

Safety

Senior Michael Taaffe – AND – Junior Jelani McDonald

Sophomore Jordan Johnson-Rubell – AND – Sophomore Xavier Filsaime

The return of Derek Williams Jr. and eventual debut of Jonah Williams will make this room great. Right now, it is really good. Michael Taaffe and Jelani McDonald bring plenty of experience and the most underrated part of the Texas defense will be the vocal leadership and communication of Taaffe at the safety spot. JJR has been receiving some praise and there is the athleticism to note of Xavier Filsaime that could bring some juice. Of course, early enrollee Zelus Hicks is someone to monitor as well.

Maybe it was just a partial tear and it was clean? Maybe not a complete rupture? It is very remarkable! Also achilles surgeries have come so far with the new techniques.

I never thought Christian Clark would be back before Baxter and doing as well as he is.

That was a very nasty injury he suffered.

I wondered if could even play football again.

Great that he is back and becoming a key figure, it seems at running back.

Hope that Baxter does the same soon.

Texas will probably still go after a running back in the portal if they can get one that they want.

Running back is becoming a position that is getting harder and harder to keep healthy.

The extended season with the present playoff format makes it even harder.

Fuck man I don’t think anyone realizes how blessed we were at WR for these last two years.

No giant portal grabs and no experience there is going to take time, hopefully these guys gel with Arch quick.
