My first morning at UT Engineering as a freshman early 90’s: “I want you to oook at the person sitting on your left and on your right………only one of you will make it through this program”.  It had a very boot camp feel ; )

Damn, they really said that? Lmao. Did they curve engineering physics in the 90s like they do now?  The class avg in dynamics and e&m was in the 50s for all sessions but every professor does a curve. I was a CNS student though.

My Eng Physics class, Fall 1983, my professor told the class "my job is to fail as many of you as I can, UT has too many eng students" in a thick almost intelligle Indian accent. Took copious notes, studied, and first test failed, like 95% of the class. I never went to class again, except to take tests and finished in top 5%.

My second year roommate was an Astrophysics major. He was told UT only graduating 13 his year. All his courses were graded on that bell curve.

Learned college is a racket or at least more of one back then. As long as you do the work and learn what is required it shouldn't matter how many they graduate.

Sounds familiar regarding Physics and Thermodynamics.  These courses along with a couple others were in effect weed out courses.  I remember a lot of exams when a 50 was top of the class and 38 was still damn good.  Weekly physics homework was due weekly online at 2am, and was extremely difficult.  You would find half the class hanging around the UGL at midnight trying to finish the assignment/turn it in online

I only took the first engineering physics class and lab. Got a B in it and an A in lab while never taking physics in high school. Wouldn't have gotten the B without a curve though and this was back in 2017.

Great conversation/reminisces, and this isn’t a comment on recent posts, but I’m sure we are rightfully pissing off many who will see all the activity on this thread, open it and find few football updates.

Is there anything from recent practices on OTF/IT/247, etc?

(And if there’s a thread on the site for walks down UT Memory Lane Guadalupe Drive where we can talk about this stuff, I’d like to know about it.)

KJ Lacey continues to look the part of a future starter at the D-I level. Lacey has a good presence, delivers the ball on time and has some escapability to him. He does not have the arm strength of Arch Manning or Trey Owens, but he has some wily-ness that makes him difficult to defend at times.

I'm curious how this will play out with Dia Bell in two years.

Have we heard anything on Jonah Williams? **UPDATE** OTF said he'll be fine and be back soon.

Ian Boyd had a piece this morning where he said the same, but then went on to say that he expects Kanu to start ahead of Brevard, because Brevard would be more needed with the second team.

See, Boyd’s history of silly positional takes and our subsequent shitting on those takes has me wondering if this is a joke or if Boyd is legitimately suggesting that we will want DT platoons of somewhat equal ability, like we have had recently…

Not a joke. Starters: Kanu/January. Second team: Brevard/Watson. I guess he wants the second team to be better than the starters for some reason.

Thanks for the clarification. I’m not saying I agree with the take, but I can see the argument there’s so much rotation being done, it’s like having two shifts of four starters, and it’s better to have complementary skill sets/abilities among the pairs you’re using.

Yeah, but by all accounts Brevard has been our best DT this spring. I guess shit can happen, but it would seem strange to put your best DT on the bench, because you want to save him for the second unit. I also think Kanu will get reps more in line with Savea/January last year, as opposed to Alfred Collins.

So is the implication here that Shaw's knee is bad enough that he'll be cut loose? Or am I reading too much into it?

I don't know if it's cut loose or more of a medical redshirt situation.

From Bobby today, below. His Butler comment is only the kind of thing he’s going to post when a coach is asking him to do so, IMO.

****

Time for some news and notes (a lot of it on the freshmen):

- KJ Lacey continues to look the part of a future starter at the D-I level. Lacey has a good presence, delivers the ball on time and has some escapability to him. He does not have the arm strength of Arch Manning or Trey Owens, but he has some wily-ness that makes him difficult to defend at times.

- James Simon is ahead of Ricky Stewart of the two freshman RBs. Christian Clark is still running third team behind Tre Wisner and Jerrick Gibson. Some are saying Gibson’s body is leaning out some this spring, which is giving him a little more bounce in his step.

- Parker Livingstone is the team’s go-to receiver currently. The clear no. 2 is Daylan McCutcheon. McCutcheon continues to be well ahead of the three other freshmen, as Jamie Ffrench, Kaliq Lockett and Michael Terry get accustomed to the intricacies of a pro-style offense. None of those guys played in offenses as sophisticated as McCutcheon did in high school. Aaron Butler is not a factor at the position.

- Nick Brooks continues to receive high praise. The words “first-round pick” get used by a lot of folks when describing him. Brandon Baker, I am told, also seems to be taking a real step forward in the last couple of weeks.

- Justus Terry and Lance Jackson are both receiving a lot of early praise. Terry is working primarily at strong-side end currently. Cole Brevard and Alex January appear to be a step ahead of their cohorts on the interior. Both Josiah Sharma and Myron Charles are showing real glimpses of why Texas liked them so much in recruiting.

- Perhaps the surprise of the second half of spring camp? Linebacker Brad Spence.

- Derrick Williams is still not all the way back. And he is only repping at safety. Jelani McDonald continues to improve.

- Kobe Black has reportedly had a good spring, enough so that Texas is unlikely to look in the portal for experienced depth at corner. Kade Phillips has also shown some real value there early in his career.

- Graceson Littleton may be the biggest surprise of the defensive freshman. The Tampa native is a future player for the Horns. He is giving Wardell Mack a real run at nickel.

That is the second time he's said that about Butler in a post.

I think they're treating Shaw's knee much like they treated Lole's shoulder in limiting him until season?

No idea how this plays out, but the staff treated Lole pretty similarly. They babied him until the season got going.

My belief is that he's doing work for Sarkisian with this stuff. They want Butler gone and now this post leads me to think something similar for Niblett.

I imagine there's all kinds of ways that guys part ways with a program. To me it sounds like:

Butler: "Good luck at your next stop. Turn your badge in to Dolores on the 2nd floor."

Niblett: "I just spoke with Coach So-and-So at UNT, he and I go way back. He said they could really use a guy like you and they'd love to bring you in for a visit."

I mentioned earlier that safety Derrick Williams is still not “fully” back although he has been practicing some.

One player who has been full-go this week is receiver Ryan Wingo. Wingo was held out for a lot of spring on a precautionary basis. His hamstring tightened and Texas just didn’t want to risk it, preferring to give it full time to resolve. Well, it’s resolved and Wingo has been back this week.

Additionally, we are told that receiver DeAndre Moore is also suited out for practice. But he is not doing many live drills or 7-on-7 work following his off-season toe surgery.

Sark understandably continues to err on the side of caution with key players and injuries during spring camp.

They may want them gone but from a player perspective it would probably be best to wait until Dec when they have more options.  I would be surprised if Sark wasn’t clear about where they stood when the portal opened so they had more time and options available. Jumping in now is a big risk.

Not sure if this is accurate. Right now Butler can still lean on his recruit ranking. By next Dec hes a 3rd year JAG with no stats.

What's the story with Butler?

I was excited when he committed but now it seems like there is some vitriol associated with him.

Bad teammate?  Cancer in the locker room?  Likes to party too much?  Over rated as a prospect?

What gives?

I've gotten the impression that he doesn't have good hands and isn't always where he's supposed to be in his routes.

I think he was just a raw prospect that Sark gambled on because of his speed.  With the type of talent in the portals at WR it doesn't sound like Sark wants to waste much time with projects.

It is so sad that UT is so terrible to its students about getting student tickets to football games. Just been reading they increased prices from $200 to $250 and LHF is $130 now and sold out immediately. We probably have one of the worst student ticket systems in the country.

It's bad.... Because it sold out immediately even at a higher price point?

it's bad because even if you buy the $250 ticket package, the odds of you getting into a game are extremely low. you cant seriously be someone that supports the current student ticket system?

I have no idea what the student ticket system is, I'm in my 30s. But your post made it sound like it was bad because of the price.

Damn, they really said that? Lmao. Did they curve engineering physics in the 90s like they do now?  The class avg in dynamics and e&m was in the 50s for all sessions but every professor does a curve. I was a CNS student though.

Every year UT gives the “two out of three” will be gone speech. Did it for my class in 1982. And yes they graded on a curve back then too. They purposely made/make the tests very difficult to separate those that truly understand the material from those that can only memorize formula usage.

I assume that's a real question and, if so, I probably shoulda' posted in the "Taking it way back..." thread. It's a UT student ticketing relic from a waythefuck long time ago. Most on here are too young to remember it.

"Now how in the hell are we supposed to compete with that guy!?" he exclaimed just as Parker Livingstone plucked the ball from the air and double toe-tapped in bounds for a scrimmage ending touchdown.

It’s also bad because quite a few organizations had inside information on when the tickets would drop so they could buy up all the student LHF memberships. LHF and the athletic office should have a fair process in place, they failed the integrity test miserably.

I didnt even know that. That's messed up. I was reading a lot of students didnt even know the LHF memberships were dropping at all.
