What's the story with Butler?

I was excited when he committed but now it seems like there is some vitriol associated with him.

Bad teammate?  Cancer in the locker room?  Likes to party too much?  Over rated as a prospect?

What gives?

I've gotten the impression that he doesn't have good hands and isn't always where he's supposed to be in his routes.

He was committed to USC as a DB before he flipped to us late in December.

Probably should go ahead and move back to DB at his next stop.

Butler did one of those early commitments to USC in the fall of 2022, decommitted in early ‘23, pledged his loyalty to Deion and Colorado in May, then backed off that commitment in December.

Quote

ESPN 300 athlete Aaron Butler decommitted from Colorado on Saturday, his father confirmed to ESPN.

Butler had been committed to the Buffs since May, but is now the third decommitment for coach Deion Sanders in the 2024 class since November.

https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/39078930/espn-300-athlete-aaron-butler-decommits-colorado

His commitment to us kinda came out of nowhere (though the above linked article did mention Texas as a possibility). He pretty much picked us on signing day, or the night before.  He signed with us without ever visiting, so that’s always a tricky one for both player and school.

I recall he was very active with social media and enjoyed the spotlight. This video was an example of:

I have zero inside knowledge, but I suspect having such ambition, then redshirting for a year with no game action, then seeing yourself at the bottom of the depth chart can lead to a less than harmonious environment.

If Arch wasn't true team guy there would have been a very bad QB controversy last year. Arch sat 2 years behind an extremely limited QB whom he saw every day he was better than. He did it quietly.

A lesser QB would have blown up team chemistry and transfered if he didn't get his way.

I don't know if Arch was better at processing the defense than Quinn though...

We score more points per game with Arch last year.  Easily.  It will be obvious this year, even with less skill position talent and arguably a step back on the OL.

Quinn accounting for 17 turnovers himself doesn't sound like he has much of a grasp either. Or he couldn't physically do what he needed to do with that processing.

I say this being super excited about Arch Manning next year

There is going to be a lot of upset people in here next year when the reality that Arch is human and makes mistakes smacks you in the face

Some of you are hyping him as the next VY , and I hope you're right, but many of you need to taper some expectations

VY made mistakes too. A lot of them

But when the game was on the line the dude stepped up and got it done.

We haven't had that at the QB position since Ehlinger, but he didn't have the team around him VY did.

The team around the QB to get it done has been built for 2 straight seasons. Arch needs to be the QB that gets it done despite making mistakes at times. That's what he will be judged on by rational people.

As long as he doesn't make 17 costly mistakes I think we'll be fine.

I never freaked out about VY's mistakes.  Because he usually made a lot of plays to offset them, even in years 1 and 2. We had a pretty decent offense in 2002 with Simms.  Our points per drive went up like 35% in 2003 with VY because of his playmaking ability.  Arch will make mistakes.  But I just don't see our offense going dormant for long stretches with him like it would frequently do with Ewers.  We had way too many games where we simply were not scoring the points we should have scored given the talent on the offensive line and skill positions -- both UGA games, Arkansas, Ags, Vandy, Ohio State.

And don't kid yourself -- Ewers made plenty of mistakes too.  He had, what, at least four turnovers turn into defensive scores?  17 turnovers overall in 14 games.  I doubt Manning turns it over at a higher rate than that.  I expect more consistent production.  And more big plays.

Not sure if this is accurate. Right now Butler can still lean on his recruit ranking. By next Dec hes a 3rd year JAG with no stats.

If other teams were high on him they would be tampering to get him in the portal.  It doesn’t seem like that’s the case so If it’s his choice he better make sure he has teams willing to take a chance on him before he goes in this late in the process.

Guarantee Sark's staff has someone going out to find interest. Reverse tampering.

It would have been great if they could have come up with something that was at least football-playing adjacent. I was ambivalent at the time, but not having a spring game sucks.

Yep. I bet it’s back next year. Or at least a practice to watch

Well I might be upset if he smacks me in the face. Or maybe I’ll be turned on, idk

It is so sad that UT is so terrible to its students about getting student tickets to football games. Just been reading they increased prices from $200 to $250 and LHF is $130 now and sold out immediately. We probably have one of the worst student ticket systems in the country.

So I'm an old, and I haven't bought student tickets since the 90s. However my daughter will be a freshman at UT in the fall (super excited about this, of course). Does this mean she has no hope of getting football tickets in the student section?

This is a dumb take. QE was overrated and everyone could see it. No one expects Manning to be perfect. The frustration was having the better 5 star QB on the bench. Will the Ewers apologists be on here eating crow when we’re actually blowing teams out next year instead of letting mediocre teams hang around and going scoreless for long stretches?

Honestly, it is possible unless they plan on reopening LHF for freshman, but Idk about this. It will be a pain in the ass for her. She'll definitely have to be on her stuff when the ticket request time comes around. Last year they changed it to requesting a ticket online instead of waiting outside the stadium like how it was from 2019-2023.

Damn, they really said that? Lmao. Did they curve engineering physics in the 90s like they do now?  The class avg in dynamics and e&m was in the 50s for all sessions but every professor does a curve. I was a CNS student though.

That was the quote they gave us during Fteshman orientation day one.

They didn't say that to us in 2016 at my transfer orientation. They just said take the transition serious, it won't be like your previous university among those lines.

Haha. Well, my Freshman Orientation was 1988. That line's been around a long time.

Not consistently throwing interceptions or turning the ball over in or close to the RZ in big games, not self sacking consistently, and hitting open receivers in stride, occasionally running the ball for a decent gain, and a fairly consistent accurate deep ball is my expectation.

I know, what a lofty bar right?

Lol you got an orientation?  In 2010, we just had a sexual harassment seminar and then were told to go get our IDs. Being a first generation college student, and a juco transfer to boot, navigating unchartered territory would've been the greatest understatement of all time.

On another note, sounds like the "Spring Fan Experience" sucked ball sack, which is what I expected. I haven't missed an actual spring game in 15 years, until today, so hopefully CDC rights this wrong.

I’d just like to see the 80+ yard pick sixes kept to zero.

I'm gruntled.

As I was watching Ewers nearly go undrafted, I started to think how awesome we are going to be next year.  The NFL GMs are telling us loud and clear that Sark took this team to the playoffs 2 years in a row with a total JAG at QB?

I can't wait to see the offense being run by someone that allows Sark to really open up the playbook.  August can't get here fast enough.

Honestly I think Quinn coming back on 2024 was unexpected.  I think watch as full time starter may have done better

Yea. I think it was with both freshman and transfer students. I was 24 so I got to meet a bunch of other transfer students which was nice. I’m a first generation college grad too. Came here from Louisiana and knew 0 people. They tried to also have ugs classes for transfer students too.

i got my Texas Science shirt at the orientation because i was the only one that knew the USC vs Texas rose bowl score. 😭😭😭😂

IIRC it was $18/semester hour in the late 80s, plus assorted fees.  So ballpark, yeah.

Geez, I went to UT Pan Am and finished in 3 years and it was exponentially more expensive than that

When we were in the red zone, or had a must have 4th down… Sark would put Arch in.  The fact that he didn’t trust his starting QB to be in the game in critical moments should tell you about his confidence in Quinn.  Sark didn’t want to have a “5 star” on his resume and have to explain it.  I get it.  I’m sure there were aspects to Quinn’s game that were better.  But I’ll trust my eyes.  Arch in his limited snaps made a mistakes…. But our offense was light years better and defenses struggled to defend us.  Quinn going in the 7th isn’t a good look for Sark.  I’m hoping he doesn’t have blind loyalty in the future if a talented backup gives you a better shot to win.  Saban has benched NFL QBs if it meant winning.  You gotta be a little cut throat Sark!
