lmao not only didn't i see most of these i've never even heard of the bulk of them 🤣

but i am a huge fan of most of the supporting actor nominees so i can root for any of them...

and if Demi wins an Oscar before Cruise...lolol

Villeneuve snubbed for director is a choice i guess?

i predict ratings are gonna be subpar lol

I plan on renting The Substance tonight.  I am only aware of it from the horror movie thread here.  I've seen zero advertising for it outside of that thread despite it having very well known actors.  Outside of blockbusters I guess studios are just relying on word of mouth for advertising.  Even after they expanded best picture nominations however long ago, I was still aware of the nominated films.

I made this comment recently in another movie thread, but how do people even learn about new movies these days, including how/where/when they can watch/stream them? Pixar, Marvel, and Mission Impossible movies get heavily advertised, obviously, but how do non-Disney, non-action blockbusters even make an blip these days? Is it all word of mouth? Like others have said, I haven't heard of most of these. A decade ago, I had at least heard of most of the smaller, more obscure nominees.

it’s in HD. Once you get past a couple pop ups. Pair to tv. Works like a charm.

For me, it's a combination of Letterboxd and the Big Picture podcast. The Big Pic is pretty normie/popcorn centric (aptly titled), but they do have special horror-centric episodes and other one offs, so it ends up providing a pretty good base of knowledge if you have an interest in keeping up with modern movies.

Wild Robot was one of the best animated films I have seen in a while. It's well worth a watch regardless of your age. So much fun, my kids and I loved it.

Inside Out 2 was a touching story and so well done. The way they write the emotions into the plot as characters, and show how they affect the girl is a great illustration of how to deal with emotions. It's a good story with a lot of positive and relatable aspects to it.

I would be happy to see either win best Animated picture, but I think Flow will get it. Flow has an interesting style of animation that stands out from the rest. It's a bit cartoonish, almost like a video game, but still beautiful in its own way. I enjoyed watching it, and I think the dialogue-less story will appeal to Oscar voters over the others.

they wait until the oscar nominees come out.

i liked anora but man, a few scenes were really drawn out and hard to watch. mostly because of the screaming on top of screaming, it was like s3 of the bear. i've become really grouchy about sound in my old age. i need to carve out a theater day and go see the brutalist. i love a good intermission.

Thanks. I’m sure my phone has AIDS now but 6 bucks is 6 bucks.

Did anyone see the end of The Substance?  How can that be Oscar worthy?

Yeah someone needs to explain that to me. Seemed like a student film at the end.

Big Pic, Blank Check are in my regular rotations

I’m also a Big Pic listener and user of Letterboxd, plus I have a good friend at work who follows movies and we talk about it. So that helps me with awareness of what’s coming out and in the awards buzz.

Even with that I’ve only seen half the best picture noms. Of those, my ranking would be:

1. Anora

2. Dune 2

3. Conclave

4. The Brutalist (could maybe switch this to #3, but the second half didn’t wow me as much)

5. Wicked (thoroughly enjoyed it but Best Picture it is not)

I will for sure watch Compete Unknown, and as a fan of the Oscars I will probably try to see The Substance and Emilia Perez too since they got so much recognition. And there’s a handful of other category nominees I've seen (Nosferatu, A Real Pain) or plan to check out.

But all that said it’s been a weak year and agree with the earlier comment that it would be very difficult for anyone who doesn’t pay close attention to the industry or make a point to go to the movies regularly to really know what’s coming out beyond the franchise releases.
