I was going to say if you think Matamoros is sticky then Nuevo Laredo is sticky butt crack in comparison.

Probably I felt the opposite because during one of my few Matamoros visits, I strolled alongside the river for who knows how long. When I get to NL, I truck due south onto the high ground.

Maybe it's all about how much river you get close to.

I did get a taxi ride in NL with a dude with a great mullet, excuse me, Los Bukis haircut. "I'm a cowboy, on a steel horse I ride" came on and he said it was his favorite song. I said "well if it's your favorite song, turn it up and let's sing it!" Windows down, we howled out "I'm WAWWWWNTED (wanted) DEAD OR ALIVE."

It really is weird how that smell hits you as you cross over the Rio Grande. My first time I ever crossed over I asked how do they keep the smell on the other side.

Now Matamoros on the other hand is really pleasant compared to NL. The only bad smell I remember was my buddy that caught the flu but wanted to party in South Padre/Matamoros for spring break anyway.

After an evening of drinking we stopped at a taco stand and my sick drunk buddy ripped an SBD. The women at the taco stand were complaining about the red headed American farting, the people behind us were gagging. It was a horrific smell. Then he kept doing it in the line to cross back over the border.

I have bailed on more than one concert, wife in tow, due to repeated air foulings. She never complains. Nor does she mention my hypocrisy. In my defense, I wouldn’t rip a fart I knew would be disgusting in a public forum.

Speaking of ruining concerts. My friend that stunk up Matamoros got way too drunk at an REK Jr. concert at Gruene Hall. He walked on stage yelling "Robert Earl Keen!!!" right before tripping and falling into the drum set knocking a bunch of shit over.

The rest of us walking away pretending not to know him.

The other thing about tariffs.  Assume for a moment that they are immediately effective:  people quit buying imported goods and instead pay a premium for domestic goods, or at least goods from non-tariffed nations.  Importation slows and stops.  Tariff revenue dries up.

If they are to be used as a revenue measure, it's taxation of Americans pure and simple.

Trying to use them as a revenue measure is pure idiocy.

Actually in real terms you can argue that the tariff to China and getting rid of the de minimus is actually an awesome thing for sustainability and climate and recycling— China was abusing the loophole and horrible products from horrible firms like SHEIN and Temu were exploiting the system.

This would help to at least speed bump the modern slave labor in China and all the cheap trash that comes into our ports. I’ve heard it’s literally doubled to like a billion shipments the past few years and the cheap China stuff (skirting duty and taxes through loopholes) is the main driver.

edit to add to be clear: 25% tariff threats for our allies CAN and MEX = stupid.

10% tariff on China: if not outright “good”, not exactly bad either.

Bad news for bourbon distilleries, as Canada used to buy more bourbon than any other country-

“New Brunswick Premier Susan Holt said Monday she planned to remove U.S. alcohol from N.B. Liquor stores and avoid signing all but the most essential new contracts with U.S. firms as a response to President Donald Trump's tariffs.

But she put part of that on hold late in the day, after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the U.S. president would delay the tariffs by 30 days.

"For now, American products will remain on ANBL shelves but we will not be purchasing new product,”  Holt said in a statement.

This is the most insane thing I’ve read this morning. They’re not industry targeted- just blanket on every single thing imported, right? And China hasn’t begun retaliating. Does anyone remember the last Trump trade war with China? Ag industry needed a massive bailout. And that had an end game in some trade deal ostensibly about protecting American IP - but where is the off ramp this time?

The last trade war with China resulted in…

This was fully 20 months after the first wave of tariffs, which did end up including Canada and Mexico as well. The difference, however, is that the tariffs started small on the Chinese in terms of what materials/industries they were applied to, added to the fact that Mexico and Canada weren’t initially included.

Here, Trump is talking about blanket tariffs on all 3 nations immediately. The next time the yield curve inverts as a result of this (and it will), it will not take as long, the recession will follow quicker than expected (pay attention to the 3:20 mark in the video), and there most likely won’t be another pandemic to give him political cover for the fallout.

Fortunately, we will have all the “but the price of bacon” people to ease our minds by telling us it made sense to put this intellectual peasant in the last place any serious person wanted to see him.

She also absolutely tore into him when he tried to act like Elon Musk's Nazi salute wasn't that big of a deal.  She looked like she literally wanted to fight him.

I know a lot of people have turned on CNN, but they still make the right look stupid pretty regularly, and I think that includes letting Jennings be his douchebag self on national tv every night.  Van Jones regularly dunks on him, too (no racist).
