He has literally said that he is going to bring back all manufacturing to the US.  As in, all the automobile components made (for example) in Canada and Mexico will be manufactured in the US now.  Nevermind things like:

1) in what fucking factories?  Constructing/retooling a major manufacturing facility doesn't happen in a few weeks/months.  It's years.

2) and speaking of years, what sane person would invest money in shifting their entire manufacturing operation to a different country based on the erratic and mercurial moves of a madman?  The policies you'd base your decision on today will almost certainly change LITERALLY tomorrow, and 150 more times between now and whenever your factory would be up and running.

3) at what additional cost to the American consumer?  We like having cheaper auto parts that are built in Mexico by lower-cost labor because we like having cheaper cars.  Start paying more in labor (good UAW wages), that $500 part from Mexico is now $900-$1000 here.  Congrats, your car price just went up.  But wait....Trump says we'll take care of that, by leaning heavily on "robots and AI."  Cool....so then....what's the fucking point of bringing that factory over here?  We won't be getting more manufacturing jobs from it.  Which is it -- are the factories gonna bring lots of jobs (and increased prices), or are they gonna keep prices low by using robots and AI (but not adding any appreciable jobs)?

MOAR COAL!

Problem though....are YOU going to invest $500 million+ in building/revamping a coal power plant, knowing that your payback time on that investment is 20+ years on the short end?

No sane source of capital is going to pour it into a coal plant.  And this admin is going to affirmatively attack the ability to build more wind or solar.  Dumbest.  Timeline.

We have 6 major manufacturing sites across the US. Every single site has a hiring and retention problem. Our manufacturing is hard, heavy work. On many instances, people will show up for one day and not show up again. Mostly, they'll work for 3 months and then quit because they found another easier job. And the ones who stay in manufacturing routinely get poached by other manufacturing companies because finding people who actually want to be in manufacturing long term is critical to your success. Our labor force is older and and only getting older. The younger generation don't want this work.

Plus our int'l manufacturing locations are much much easier to deal with. They can easily find workers and those workers are agreeable to increase and/or change their work scopes. Trying to get the US unions to take on more work comes down to how much more blood (money, increase costs) are we willing to give.

Just like how consumers "say" they want to buy American vs foreign made, that conviction lasts right up to them choosing the lower costs items which are mostly all foreign made.

The idea is romantic. It's just not ever going to happen.

BREAKING: China Just Canceled All U.S. Beef Contracts—Buying from Canada & Brazil Instead

Trump’s trade war tantrum just cost American farmers billions—China is officially cutting off U.S. beef and shifting its business to Canada and Brazil.

🔥 $21 billion in American agricultural exports? GONE.

🔥 China’s tariffs on U.S. beef? Up to 15%.

🔥 Meanwhile, Canada & Brazil are laughing their way to the bank.

🔴 American ranchers just got screwed.

🔴 Trump’s chest-thumping on tariffs just handed China an easy excuse to ditch the U.S. market.

🔴 MAGA “patriots” who cheered the trade war? Congrats—your beef industry just got bodied.

But hey, tariffs are “winning,” right?

Let’s see how that plays out when U.S. farmers start begging for another bailout.

When does the reciprocal tariff report come out?

He and his cronies believe European VAT is equivalent to a tariff on US goods.

I fully expect him to announce significant tariffs on a significant amount of European goods when that report is released.

I'm probably the last one to realize this, but listening to a Jonah Goldberg interview, and his point is that the idea that tariffs is just stupid is well known, put the purposes of this is to increase the traffic to Mara Lago and thus the multimillions in graft. No better way to get bribes and post term rewards than individual industry reps coming in to beg for exemptions.

This.  It is absolutely a way for people/enterprises in the regime's favor (and favor can be purchased for the low, low price of a $20 million "reservation" at Mar A Lago or somesuch) to obtain special treatment (hey, YOU don't have to pay the tariff).  It's a path to grift and bribery.  All roads lead to grift and bribery.  That's how regimes like this work.

But folks like Ana, who are TOTALLY against corruption, and think we need to "burn it all down," think this is fantastic and brilliant and 20-D chess.

The fact that adult humans cannot see the obvious in front of them continues to amaze me, no matter how many times it happens.

So basically, when Trump is done tariffing every item and country on the planet, all trade with other countries will slowly cease and we will only be able to purchase items from the US which will be more expensive than we are used to since US companies won’t be able to sell their products worldwide?  Seems like a genius plan.

China is absolutely eating the world’s lunch on electric vehicles.  And they’ve done so through state subsidies for their industry and extractive agreements with Western companies looking to build/sell in China.  Same pattern with solar energy.

This is actually the arena where the U.S. should be looking to impose punishing tariffs along with other advanced countries.  Trump’s tariff tantrums absolutely send the world running to China.
