Trump is going to raise the costs of car for many "American" manufacturers but he's warning them to not raise the costs to customers?

By the way, there are rumors that the same is/will be occurring with American O&G producers in that Trump wants more drilling even if they are operating at a loss.

Strange how capitalism is not ok in the MAGA world.

Authoritarians don't understand how economies work.  This has been proven over and over as they try to manipulate them.  Tfg understands how shakedowns work, and he thinks he can manipulate the world economy with them, and he can to some extent.  But not without significant negative consequences.

He's looking for a win, any win.  If these countries capitulate the slightest bit, he will acquiesce and remove/lower tariffs.  All he wants is a headline.

You are correct.

If I were on the other side of the negotiating table I would do absolutely nothing.  Accept the tariff and plan to sell a few fewer cars in the US.  Watch Trump sweat as prices rise and people complain.  Don't be the first to blink.

Eventually Trump would cave to the domestic pressure to get rid of the tariffs.  Americans like cheap stuff, new stuff, and stuff you can drive around.  We're not taking the bus.

At some point, they'll start doing this.  I understand the impulse to try to avoid the economic harm if it's a modest give, but he's just going to keep doing this bullshit if they capitulate at all. They have to stand firm and make him back down, especially if they can all stand together, which seems to be the likely current play by Canada and the EU.

Any lawdog will tell you that it's quite difficult negotiating with a lunatic.  One tactic is to just give them what they want on a small matter -- and never deal with them again.

Everyone is so afraid of him, it bottles my mind.  In most cases, about all he can do is call them names on Truth.  But, because "tweets" have replaced policy and politics here in the good ol USA, I guess I need to get with the times.

fixed.

it's not about him, it's about the redhat morons. most of them would prefer to suffer economically as long as it means owning the libs. that's their one policy platform.

nothing is about what 'actually happens', it's about how dems react to it. every fox news chyron is about the dem response, not the action.

text chain circus? "democrats lose minds over supposed "security breach". that's how news is covered now. takeaway - "i don't know what hegseth is doing, but it's making the democrats upset so i like it."

There's no endpoint to any deals in international relations, which makes attempting to negotiate with Trump pointless. If you're dealing with a lunatic in a real estate deal who is being a belligerent asshole, you can still make some concessions if it's worth it to you to get the deal to the finish line, because then you don't have to deal with that asshole again. This is a whole different scenario, which is why ultimately the only response any other countries can give Trump is to tell him to shove his tariffs up his ass.

The "never deal with them again" part is tricky when said lunitic is POTUS

Just announce you're moving production to the U.S. in 2035 and don't follow up. Trump will dead long before then.

We had the same discussion during lunch. Promise you'll do shit, then slow play it until Trump dies, and hope JD Vance or Steve Bannon doesn't take over and call you on it.

Of the 5 of us who were at lunch, 2 are hard MAGA, 1 is feeling the leopard's breath on his face, and the last shared my opinion that we're headed into a recession because of DOGE and tariffs.

It's easy, just stroke his ego re-hash an old manufacturing announcement with a new ribbon cutting ceremony and he folds like a cheap tent.

Every country that Trump is imposing tariffs upon should promote their Miss ____ to become their top diplomat / special envoy to the US because he will say yes as long as he thinks he gets to fuck them. Unfair to the woman who is subjugated to the idiot, but sacrifices for the common good and what not.

Im hoping that the tariffs actually start today and there isn’t some last minute reprieve? The tariffs themselves are bad, but we need to stop the uncertainty of when they will start. And if these countries cave today, there will be another trump demand, or else, tomorrow. The next demand will be repayment for past trade imbalances if those countries lay down today.

unfortunately we need to move forward on burning down the economy because it will eventually occur under trumps plans. We might as well get to the pain part ASAP so we can get out of it sooner.

its sad that we need other countries to also hurt to deal with our mistakes.

Our country is being led by an abusive man. This behavior of threatening and then relenting and over and over is classic abusive controlling behavior. It's meant to make his targets keep their heads low for fear of worse reprisals.

Saw a story on the uncertainty in the auto industry in Mexico and was pretty enraged.

I love my country and I know what uniform I have to wear but I love other countries as much and I hate when this asshole needlessly fucks with them.

Agree on the uncertainty.  Trump can change 180 degrees and he'll still be the hero to his cult.  Or not change and still be the hero.

When the best/most confident thing the Speaker can say about the plan is ‘we have to trust the instincts of the president regarding economic plan’…. You know they know beyond any doubt it’s a terrible idea

Reporting from the Rose Garden

Howard Lutnick, the commerce secretary, just entered the Rose Garden carrying a large poster board. He looked quite giddy for Trump’s tariffs event.

Suggesting that exporters are attempting to beat the latest round of Trump administration tariffs, a steady volume of truck traffic was heading down Canada’s busiest highway toward the bridge between Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit. Many of the trucks bore the name of automakers and are presumably carrying auto parts, which will face 25 percent tariffs after midnight.

Trump says the United States will calculate a tariff rate for other countries based on tariffs and “other forms of cheating.” These tariff rates are quite high. He says China will face a 34 percent tariff, while the European Union will be 20 percent. Japan will be 24 percent and India 26 percent.

Damn, I'm glad I'm glad World Market is a private company and not in my portfolio.

Trump says he will also establish a universal baseline tariff of 10 percent that will apply to all countries, in addition to the numbers he’s already announced. That means a country like China will face a 44 percent tariff on top of the 20 percent Trump has already imposed.

What I am laughing at are the tariffs on some of the poorest nations in the world that buy very little US products.

Bangladesh?? They export textiles and rice. Yeah, that will teach them (to only keep buying Chinese goods)

The president says he will charge the U.K. a 10 percent tariff. Even that is pretty remarkable, since the United States runs a trade surplus with Britain, it’s such a close ally and the country has been trying to negotiate a trade deal with the United States.

It really feels like he's flushing the global economy and the goodwill the U.S. has built up over the last 80 years down the toilet just so he can make the whole world watch him babbling for a fucking hour.  Good job, America - who can have foreseen this after watching this narcissistic fuck treat the pandemic like his own shitty reality show last time.

Trump says, “if you want your tariff rate to be zero, then you build your product right here in America”

So many factory jobs!

Quote

“They’ve got some very bad things going on in South Africa,” Trump says as he outlines the reciprocal tariff against that nation. Trump has amplified false claims about the persecution of white Afrikaners in South Africa, and made an exception to his refugee ban to screen Afrikaners for refugee status. Trump took a break from describing his tariffs to criticize the media for its coverage of South Africa.

Those poor poor white South Africans. They've never caught a break!

Going out of his way to raise prices everywhere, after winning an election on lowering prices on day one.
