This is just it though. Trump has already shown he'll do a 180 if he can just get some kind of fig leaf "concession" so he can remove the tariff and declare victory. I think there has already been some long lasting damage done by betraying our partners, but that doesn't mean the market won't go right back to being irrational af. I've got pretty much everything in cash or money markets right now, but I might start layering back in if the S&P sheds another 5%.

This is all just so fucking stupid though.

This is true, but he'll also double down on a bad strategy solely because other people are criticizing it since he is after all the expert on everything.

That's where the fig leaf and GOP propaganda apparatus come in. A malignant narcissist can convince himself that his plan worked brilliantly even when it's still a fully engulfed dumpster fire.

eta: We saw this in Dotard 1.0 where we went through all kind of chaos with Canada and Mexico only to rebrand NAFTA and declare victory. I can still remember talking to people that were convinced we got a better deal as a result of the chaos. Same with China. Sure we had to bailout the farmers, but we got a totally new deal with China!!!!!1!!1!!!!!one!!!!

The bottom will be near when you see this guy's picture posted 100 times on various market websites.  That's your tell.

At least we've got a steady hand at the tiller. Someone who can admit when they've made a mistake and correct course. amirite?

And yet we still have people on this board that believe Trump is psychologically capable of admitting error and acting accordingly to adjust. Fucking naive belief in belief.

Plus we opened up huge doors for farmers in South America to penetrate while American farmers were caught in the middle of the original tariffs war. Take a look at which countries' farmers are experiencing real growth in APAC and which ones are struggling to return to pre-2018 levels.

If there's anything Trump is good at, it's admitting he's wrong and changing, right?

Right...?

This is what I've been saying over and over. Dems need to hang this shit on Congressional R's. Scream it from the mountain tops. DOTarD is fucking you over, hard. And Congress is letting him do it.

Introduce bills to stop this shit. They won't pass, but it might help to get the message out there.

The Senate has already done this...

That was Canada specific. Dems need to introduce bills daily and get in front of every microphone they can. Go on Joe Rogan and every right wing network and call this bullshit out for what it is.

Kid Rock will fix this.

But seriously, this is catastrophic because even if Trump pulls a 180 today, he’s already poisoned the well of trust beyond repair… the credible threat of reinstating the tariffs at any time will always be on the table.

By the same token, let’s say these stupid protectionist tariffs work beyond our wildest dreams and American manufacturing comes storming back (it will not but let’s say it does)… then the new manufacturing sector is completely dependent on tariff protectionism, which there is no guarantee the tariffs will remain in perpetuity.  Increased uncertainty and volatility is the most likely outcome… which is precisely why tariffs do not work in the first place.

Great job MAGA.

Yep.  His first term made the world question whether we should be trusted (in an economic sense) to continue leading.  The second term has answered that question.  He has made us a 2nd tier economic power (at best giving up our seat as the unquestioned leader) in less than 3 months.

It's worse than that.  We are not in the global economic hierarchy so much as we are now an enemy/adversary state of......everyone.  Fucking literally....EVERYONE.  Even fucking uninhabited islands.  We just declared war on every single person and nation on planet Earth (that's what a trade war is -- a war).  For fucking NOTHING.

A terrorist nuclear attack on an American city would have been less devastating than the damage this fuckhead has done in under 90 days.  We are destroyed, and the fucking kicker is, IT IS 100% SELF-INFLICTED.

I never thought I'd see a nation state commit suicide like this.  I sure as hell never thought it would be MY nation state.  Well, that's not true.  I never thought that until around 10 years ago.  And then, it occurred to me that "holy shit, we're really doing this, and we aren't going to stop until it's truly finished."  And...here we are.  We are in the end game now.

Heard talk that this would devastate children's cardiac programs, possibly causing them to shut down, as much of the very specialized equipment is produced in Germany. Killing kids to stick it to the libs!

Fuck them kids.

We are at war with the planet.  And if you're a sane person, you're rooting for us to lose, and lose hard.

Hell, a terrorist nuclear attack would have garned sympathy from the world.

Now, there would be a collective shoulder shrug.

Making deals with Vietnam doesn't help build US manufacturing. It keeps products cheap here and maybe helps a few US exporters sell more in Vietnam. It also will not increase govt tariff revenue. Sounds like it doesn't nothing to check the boxes for Trump.

I'd say this tariff stupidity is probably the top non-war unforced error a US President has ever committed.  Just no reason for any of it and so incredibly stupid.  This really is Trump's masterpiece.  He decided to cut the legs off the US and World economy for absolutely no reason.  This benefits no one, well there's one country that's probably pretty happy.

So can we all agree we have a new "blunder" to add to the list of classic blunders. Never get involved in a land war in Asia, never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line and never put tariffs on the entire world.

What's really important to understand is that this blunder is far from just being an economic one.  It is across-the-board.  Remember, trade wars are wars.  And the US just declared war on.....this:

Rotating_earth_animated_transparent.gif

We are now the enemy of....literally every person and country on the planet.  Via an insane, unprovoked, and self-destructive war.  It's just so.  Fucking.  Stupid.

Would it have though?    I think if one had happened on 2/15/25 a fair portion of the world would have thought we brought it on ourselves.  And they'd be right.

Crashing the economy is a great way to get house prices to come down. Of course, the middle class won't have any money to buy them, but rich people will.
