Every time one of the MAGA idiots makes this argument about American vehicles, it reminds me that these morons have never visited a foreign country. American auto manufacturers excel at making full size pickup trucks. Like they’re really, really good at it. And yet, for some reason that I just can’t put a finger on, those vehicles aren’t popular on the streets of Tokyo or London.

They are really good at making full size trucks because of the American tariffs on full size trucks that have been in existence since LBJ. It’s allowed them to be profitable in a single segment instead of trying to compete in other areas.

You have completely missed the point.

This AM, Navarro said that Vietnam’s offer to eliminate tariffs on US imports isn’t enough. So much for reciprocal tariffs.

Navarro is working to convince Trump, or has convinced him, that this is about trade imbalance. They don’t know what they’re doing and it’s important to remember that Navarro was never a respected economist. He was just some guy, albeit formally educated, that Jared found on an Amazon book search.

I heard part of this on the radio this morning and damn, Navarro was really letting the BS fly. If the goal is to have no trade deficit with any country in the world, then we are really on the front edge of great depression 2.0. But hey, at least we are also hell bent on destroying the social safety net as well! So we've got that going for us.

No. That’s a popular misconception. We aren’t good at making full size trucks, we are bad at it,  because of the chicken tax. We are producing high profit full size luxury  trucks that are increasingly designed for a combination of consumer preferences and towing, and subsidizing the fuck out of them, despite losing utility for agriculture and most trades.

That’s why older pickups with lower, longer beds are still so expensive, because we restrict the availability of the far more useful trucks sold elsewhere in the world. Unless you are talking about suburban strip mall parking lot bro-dozers, we’re like the Cuba of full size trucks. We don’t allow the market to give us the products we need, because of the chicken tax.

Thats why the maverick was such an instant hit- every tradesman in America immediately recognized that it was the product they need.

Before Trump, Peter Navarro was, literally, a local cable-access show crank.

My point (which was poorly worded) was that the tariffs essentially protect a very profitable part of the legacy US auto-makers business which has led to them avoiding development of other potential areas such as smaller cars which might be interesting to consumers in London/Tokyo mentioned in the other post and smaller more practical trucks, etc.

Protecting those markets via tariffs leads to reduced efficiency and innovation which is one of many downsides to TFG’s love of tariffs.

Yes. The king is mad and dug in. Honestly Congress taking away the tariff button isn’t enough. He needs to be removed from office

1) Yes, that is the only way.

2) And will never happen.

Trump could launch a nuke against Seattle, and it would never happen.  He could raid Fort Knox, take all the gold, ship it offshore to an account loudly proclaimed "DONALD TRUMP'S PERSONAL ACCOUNT," and it would never happen.

Nobody is coming to save us.  Our only hope is his death.

I don't see how he is anything other than a terrorist at this point. If your goal was to destroy America in your first 100 days, it would basically look just like this.

Fox News talking points circa 08/01/2025:

-- It's our patriotic duty to pay more for groceries, clothes, and gasoline.

-- This is the short-term cost of bringing good jobs from China back to America.

-- The 9% unemployment rate is the result of Joe Biden's failed economic policy.  It would be 15% if Kamala had won.

-- Sure, the market is down 30% YTD, but Joe Biden stuttered.  It would be down 40% if Kamala had won.

-- Yes, we're leaving NATO, and it's about time we joined our Russian comrades in their fight against Ukraine, then Poland, then the rest of Europe.  Those Europeans have been taking advantage of us ever since we single-handedly defeated the Nazis for them.  Now they're going to pay us back by becoming colonies.

-- Murka.

DJIA has lost 16% of its value since inauguration day....and we ain't even CLOSE to done with the fallout.

All to "bring back" jobs like "stitching Nike shoes together" from Vietnam and shit.

It is impossible to capture how stupid this all is.  Much of it driven by an "economist" who LITERALLY MADE UP A SOURCE -- WHICH WAS REALLY HIMSELF -- IN THE BOOK HE WROTE ON ECONOMICS.  You can't make this shit up.  Nobody could.

It's a helluva thing that Ford makes some kick-ass smaller cars for the European market that compete pretty well, but not in the US of fuckin' A where you can't buy a normal gotdam car from them anymore.

In my more generous moments, I wonder if this is the play. JD and his backers encourage Trump to double and triple down on stupid, destructive policies, and then swoop in to “save” us all with the 25th Amendment.

But then I remember that those guys are stupid fucking cowards. They have no grand plan. They’re bull-riding this bomb all the way down with the rest of the MAGA dipshits.

My favorite part is how when the market went up 3 or 4% right after the Inaguration, it was the "Trump Bump."  Then when it started it's slower decline, the first roughly 8% off the high, that was the result of shit Joe Biden did last year.  I eagerly await hearing whose fault the last few sessions are, but I know it's not really the tariffs, because Jesus put Trump in office to save us, so it must be something else.

yeah, fighting a dick measuring contest with a "dic"tatorship is not something that ends well given we are the buyer / tariff payer in this conflict.

For Miller’s auto industry expertise- how many of the euro and Japanese cars were actually assembled in the USA by American workers?

and there are plenty of fords running around Europe.  Plenty of older vauxhalls and citroens too from when GM owned them.

He would also have to ask ford and GM why they sold brands like vauxhall, Citroen, Volvo, rover, and jaguar.
