China goes to 125% of US imports

https://gss.mof.gov.cn/gzdt/zhengcejiedu/202504/t20250411_3961824.htm

Quote

On April 10, 2025, the US government announced that the "reciprocal tariff" on Chinese goods exported to the US would be further increased to 125%. The US's arbitrary imposition of abnormally high tariffs on China seriously violates international economic and trade rules, disregards the post-World War II global economic order built by the US itself, and violates basic economic laws and common sense. It is completely a unilateral bullying and coercion. China strongly condemns this.

Quote

In accordance with the Tariff Law of the People's Republic of China, the Customs Law of the People's Republic of China, the Foreign Trade Law of the People's Republic of China and other laws and regulations and the basic principles of international law, and with the approval of the State Council, the State Council Tariff Commission has announced that the additional tariff rate stipulated in the "Announcement of the State Council Tariff Commission on Adjusting the Measures for Imposing Additional Tariffs on Imported Goods Originating in the United States" (Tax Commission Announcement No. 5 of 2025) will be adjusted from 84% to 125% from April 12, 2025. Other matters shall be implemented in accordance with the "Announcement of the State Council Tariff Commission on Imposing Additional Tariffs on Imported Goods Originating in the United States" (Tax Commission Announcement No. 4 of 2025).

Quote

Even if the US continues to impose higher tariffs, it will no longer make economic sense and will become a joke in the history of world economy. At the current tariff level, there is no market acceptance for US goods exported to China. If the US continues to play the tariff numbers game, China will ignore it. However, if the US insists on continuing to substantially infringe on China's interests, China will resolutely counterattack and fight to the end.

That was inevitable.  We’re not a reliable trading partner anymore.  This is generational.  China is going to suffer unbelievably in the short term but we’re going to see consequences for the next twenty years to this silliness.

I think our best bet is going to be to hope former allies forgive us for our collective stupidity on trade for the next few years.

I think this is only true if in the next election cycle there isn't constitutional amendments made to fix this and modernize the guardrails.

If that happens I think we can restore everything pretty quickly. If not, then America is fucked. It will quickly become a slightly better weather Russia.

I don't even think a constitutional amendment would do a whole lot since trump has proven the constitution, judges, and the law can be ignored without consequence.

Once the republicans in congress showed they're all in for the lawless dictator there's really no going back without decades of evidence to the contrary to build the trust back.

I saw this handy chart that helps illustrate the point Furman is making.  I wish there was a column that showed the tariff situation pre-Trump.

WaPo is Bezos's mouthpiece now. The price of all the garbage he sells on his website just went way up. Maybe he needs to buy a few more reality TV shows from Melania for eleventy billion dollars.

This, ultimately, will be the great tragedy of the 2nd Trump presidency. Not just the global US-led economic order, but there are all sorts of institutions both inside the country and internationally that took an incredible amount of effort, commitment, and time to build up. Take the CDC, for example. The envy of the world. Torn down to a joke within a matter of months, because reasons.

This too. My wife related that the solo manicurist she uses is fucked - her products largely come from China, because that’s who makes such things. So, 1) she’ll have to raise her prices a LOT, and 2) as shit goes south, people will cut back on “unnecessary expenses.” This shit is going to wreck her business.
Multiply that by literally hundreds of thousands of businesses nationwide. But fuck those people, they don’t count or matter to this admin, because they’re not billionaire oligarchs.

Kai Ryssdal’s joke was that at this point, the tariff rates might as well be “infinity plus one,” because they are now high enough to functionally shut down all trade between China and the US.
This is just idiocy.

It'll be at least 3 1/2 years until there's even the possibility of a new administration that can possibly be elected to fix this but its already too late because we've let the world know that half of our electorate is prone to electing disruptive assholes and the world has no reason to ever trust us again as a reliable and steady economic trading partner. And lol at the idea of a constitutional amendment, there's not a single thing that 3/4 of the states will ever agree upon ever again, so we're on an inevitable and unavoidable trajectory of being something far less than the economic superpower we've been for the last century. That's over and done with permanently. It will be interesting to see what the new world order looks like, my best guess is that there won't be a single dominant superpower anymore and that the EU and China find a way to stability with far less reliance on the US.

For those that hope the Republicans are going to turn on Trump, I'd like to remind you that the Germans followed Hitler until he shot himself just before the Russians captured him when they overran Berlin.  Shits gonna get much worse before anything good happens on that front.

Sorry if these are stupid questions...

If something was ordered and paid for from China in mid March, but hasn't shipped yet, what is the tarrifs on it (and when would that be calculated)?

Is it the tarrif rate at time of purchase? At time of shipping? At time of receipt at the port? And if the rates keep fluctuating, would someone be able to leave a product at the port until the rates dropped again before picking it up (and paying the new rate)?

Another question... Is there a price threshold for tarrifs? It looks like the de minimus rate of $800 goes away on May 2... So small ticket items received (? Shipped?) by then wouldn't have the tarrif applied?

Seriously, I have little fucking idea as to the details of exactly when/how a tariff is applied, if it's FOB delivery, etc.

I didn’t stay at a Holiday Inn, but I recall reading somewhere that it is applied on arrival. I would interpret that as when it reaches the port. That means we are all fucked.

What a shame.

https://www.wsj.com/business/autos/tesla-deletes-buy-option-for-model-s-and-x-from-china-website-a6612085

Quote

Tesla has removed the option for purchases of new Model S and Model X vehicles on its China website as trade tensions between the world’s two largest economies escalate.

The “place new order” option wasn’t available for the two imported models on the U.S. electric-vehicle maker’s China website, according to checks by The Wall Street Journal on Friday. However, buyers can still view and place orders on existing inventories for the Model S and X. The buy option remains available for other models on the site.

Tesla didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Quote

Analysts say the two EV models, which are imported into China, will likely be affected by higher tariffs. “The two models are quite old and a bit expensive for the Chinese market anyway,” CCB International analyst Qu Ke said. Tesla’s factory in Shanghai only makes Model 3 and Model Y cars.

Spoiler

The development came after the White House clarified overnight that tariffs imposed on China by President Trump in his second term add up to 145%, not 125%, as previously indicated. Beijing has responded with a broad set of countermeasures, including raising levies on U.S. goods to 84% from 34% and reducing the number of American films allowed to enter the country.

China on Friday raised tariffs on U.S. goods to 125% from 84%, and said it will disregard any further tariffs increases by the U.S. on Chinese goods.

The U.S. EV giant continues to face pressure in the world’s largest auto market as geopolitical tensions and competition from Chinese players intensify.

Tesla China sold 78,828 vehicles in March, down 11% from a year earlier, and exported just 4,701 units, data from the China Passenger Car Association showed.

Great idea to have a kill switch in our own equipment. Nobody would ever figure out how to use that against us.
