I’ve a friend from Taiwan (mangos the size of footballs, she claims) who introduced me to her husband, who is from the Guangdong province, where men cook meals equally as often as women. So, we talked food. At one point Fang, my friend, pointed at her husband and said: “He has eaten dog!” Not knowing what else to say, I asked if dog was tasty. “Don’t eat dog,” he said, “once you do, then all dogs bark at you.”

Good.

I've had good experience with them for b2b shipments but have had your experience with receiving b2c deliveries.

I just saw on Bloomberg Asia that China has announced that other countries had better be careful and not enter into trade deals with the United States that have negative effects on China.  🇨🇳

To their peril, I assume.

Trump will pull back tariffs in 3... 2... 1...

Trump meets with US retailers to discuss tariffs

WASHINGTON, April 21 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump met with major retailers, including Walmart (WMT.N), opens new tab, Home Depot (HD.N), opens new tab, Lowe's (LOW.N), opens new tab and Target (TGT.N), opens new tab, on Monday to discuss broad-based tariffs likely to raise the cost of everyday goods that they import.
Big U.S. chains, like Walmart and Target, rely heavily on imported goods, and tariffs — including 145% levies on China — are expected to add strain on Americans already burdened by prolonged inflation.

"We had a productive meeting with President Trump and his team and appreciated the opportunity to share our insights," a Walmart spokesperson said in a statement, without elaborating. The retailer previously said its CEO, Doug McMillon, would be in attendance.

This marks McMillon's first meeting with Trump since the introduction of the president's "Liberation Day" tariffs. Earlier in April, McMillon said the two had not personally discussed tariffs, although other members of Walmart's leadership had been in regular contact with his administration.

Trump's erratic tariff policies have sent ripples across numerous industries and roiled U.S. stock markets for weeks. More recently he has expressed anger at remarks from Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, who said last week the economy was at risk from both lower growth and higher inflation.

U.S. markets sold off on Monday, while the benchmark 10-year Treasury note and the U.S. dollar also came under pressure. He announced sweeping tariffs on dozens of countries on April 2, before pausing the duties for a 90-day period - except those on China, singling out the world's second-largest economy for the biggest levies.

A Home Depot spokesperson characterized the meeting as "informative and constructive." A Target representative said its CEO Brian Cornell was in attendance at the "productive meeting...to discuss the path forward on trade." Lowe's did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

More than half of Walmart and Target's imports are from China, according to company figures, while both Home Depot and Lowe's also import from that nation. Analysts are concerned that these retailers would see a substantial hit to their profit margins as a result of tariffs.

New tariffs everyone!

https://www.theverge.com/news/653750/tariffs-solar-us-china-southeast-asia

Quote

Solar cells from four Southeast Asian countries that have been major suppliers to the US are facing newly increased tariffs, hiked up as high as 3,521 percent.

The tariffs affect Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam, which together accounted for more than three quarters of total module imports last year, according to Bloomberg. The tariffs essentially make the products “unmarketable” in the US, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Quote

The move comes after long-running Commerce Department investigations into whether Chinese companies were funneling products through Southeast Asia to avoid tariffs and lower prices. It also heightens Donald Trump’s trade war with China after roiling global markets with drastic tariff proposals this month. The president called a 90-day pause on tariffs, excluding China.

US solar companies have been split on what to do about cheap solar cells from Southeast Asia. Domestic manufacturers petitioned the Commerce Department to investigate, while renewable energy project developers are worried about the tariffs raising costs for construction and the manufacturing of panels in the US using imported cells.

Quote

Cambodia refused to comply with the investigation, and got hit with the highest tariffs at 3,521 percent. Duties for companies in Vietnam reach as high as 395.9 percent, 375.2 in Thailand, and 34.4 for Malaysia.

The US International Trade Commission still has to weigh in on the proposed tariffs in June to finalize them.

This is the result of a specific case, about a specific product, which was specifically found to be subject of unfair subsidies and then being priced below their cost of production (dumping).  In other words....THAT is the kind of situation that specific, targeted tariffs are SUPPOSED TO BE USED FOR.  The problem is that this admin has taken such an idiotic blanket approach to tariffs on....everything....against....everyone....that it's functionally impossible to separate the wheat from the chaff....and the shit....and garbage....and shards of glass.

Tariffs are a tool.  They can be useful in certain specific situations.  Running around and whacking everyone you see on the head with a hammer is not a good way to convince people that a hammer can be a useful tool when it comes time to drive a nail into a board.

This 100%. I’m for tariffs used correctly, raw goods like steel, aluminum, rubber, should have been in place to keep more production domestically a while back.  The execution of what Trump did makes 0 sense, but don’t try talking sense to people who only watch Foxnews and believe the spin. I’ve tried with educated friends that seemed logical a few years back but now it’s all one side vs the other on everything and they puke out and buy into the spin Trump puts out.

There's somehow still a lot of construction going on in my neighborhood.  But I walk my dogs at night and there are also a lot of cars that do not look familiar checking in on those constructions sites.  I'm sure thievery is running rampant or soon well.

What I like about these massive, indiscriminate tariffs is that they give me the chance to make my bootlegger dreams come true with an infinite variety of cargo.  Maybe I'll smuggle lumber! Or injection molded dildos!  Perhaps cell phones!  French cheese!  Whatever the case, at some point in the smuggling journey, I need to utilize a sweet wooden Chris-Craft, because motherfuckers, it's all about the style.

Trump says China tariffs will ‘come down substantially,’ hinting at potential U-turn —

US President Donald Trump has signaled a potential U-turn on his trade war with China amid continued market volatility, saying the high tariffs on Chinese goods will “come down substantially, but it won’t be zero.”

Trump’s remarks, made at a White House news event Tuesday, appear to mark a rhetorical climbdown after weeks of tough posturing and tit-for-tat retaliation that sent tariffs on China beyond a staggering 145%.

“145% is very high and it won’t be that high,” Trump said in a question-and-answer session with reporters in the Oval Office. “It won’t be anywhere near that high. It’ll come down substantially. But it won’t be zero.”

Trump made the comments when asked about Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s remarks earlier in the day that the high tariff rates between the United States and China have effectively embargoed trade between the economies.

Bessent said at a private investment conference hosted by JP Morgan Chase that the trade war with China is unsustainable and he expects the battle to de-escalate in the very near future, a person familiar with the matter confirmed to CNN.

Instead of a hard break or complete decoupling between the United States and China, Bessent told investors that the goal is to have a rebalancing of trade, the source told CNN.

That assessment gave a boost to a Wall Street rally that had taken shape earlier on Tuesday, with all three major US stock indexes hitting their highest levels of the day after Bessent’s remarks were made public.

Asian stocks also rose on Wednesday, with Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index leading the regional gains, ending the trading day more than 2% higher. Japan’s Nikkei 225 finished about 2% higher and South Korea’s Kospi closed up 1.5%.

Asked about Trump and Bessent’s comments on Wednesday, China’s Foreign Ministry said the US should “stop its threats and coercion, and engage with China on the basis of equality, mutual respect and reciprocity” if it wants to make a deal.

“Claiming it wants to reach an agreement with China while constantly applying maximum pressure is not the right way to engage with China — and it simply won’t work,” Guo Jiakun, a spokesperson for the ministry, told reporters at a regular news conference.

“China’s position on the tariff war initiated by the United States is very clear: We do not want to fight, but we are not afraid to fight. If it’s to fight, we’ll fight till the end. If it’s to talk, our door is wide open,” he added.

Trump’s shift in tone also went viral on the Chinese internet. On Wednesday, the hashtag “Trump chickened out” was trending as a top topic on social media platform Weibo, racking up more than 150 million views.

The world’s two largest economies have slapped record tariffs on each other in a swiftly escalating fight that has roiled global markets, disrupted supply chains and stoked recession fears.

So far, China has struck a defiant tone and refused to back down. Instead, it retaliated by raising tariffs on US goods to 125%, adding more American companies on its export control list and unreliable entity list, and restricting the export of critical minerals used in everything from iPhones to missile systems.

Beijing also moved to exert pain on key US industries, restricting the number of Hollywood movies shown in the country and returning at least two Boeing jets intended for use by Chinese airlines to the US.

Through it all, Trump has insisted that he has a “very good relationship” with Xi Jinping while waiting for the Chinese leader to reach out – and has told his team that the US will not make the first move, CNN reported earlier.

Rather than calling Trump to negotiate tariffs, Xi has instead launched a diplomatic charm offensive with other trade partners to push back against US efforts to use the tariff war to isolate China economically.

On Tuesday, Trump again expressed his hope for Xi to come to the negotiation table – and promised to “be very nice.”

Asked if the US was going to play hardball with China or Xi in order to make a deal, or if officials would mention the Covid-19 pandemic, Trump quickly responded: “No.”

“No, no, we’re going to be very nice. They’re going to be very nice, and we’ll see what happens,” the president added. “But ultimately, they have to make a deal, because otherwise they’re not going to be able to deal in the United States, and we want them involved.”

“I think we’re going to live together very happily and ideally work together, so I think it’s going to work out very well,” he said.

A person familiar with the Chinese government’s thinking told CNN last week that before Trump unveiled his “Liberation Day” tariffs on April 2, China had designated a point person for talks with the US, and that Beijing was unclear about the right contact on the US side. Trump may want to be his own negotiator, but this isn’t compatible with how China works, the source added.

Referencing hawkish or even hostile views on China expressed by Trump’s Cabinet members, the person said Trump’s failure to reject such views suggested he condoned them despite his public assertions about respecting and liking Xi.

Earlier this month, Beijing slammed US Vice President JD Vance for his comments about “Chinese peasants” in an interview that has drawn widespread ire and ridicule on China’s internet.

What the hell is the point of any of this? We are going to reduce the tariffs to some unknown level for unknown reasons at some unknown time? We are going to be nice in our negotiations with China to achieve some unknown objective?

I fail to see how we get a good deal for the US while being nice to China in negotiations. I fail to see how reducing the tariffs to some other random value does anything besides encourage everybody to just stop all economic activity and wait around to see what this new value is going to be. And why would we want that to happen?

I mean I know everything is being run by idiots for nonsensical reasons but it still boggles the mind.

What’s the spin that the conservative websites are putting on Trump’s change in tone re: China? It was a high stakes game of chicken that Trump started and he is now the first to back down. He swore he would make a deal with China and now he is backtracking with no deal in place, while Xi stood firm. It took less than a month to break him.

How does a Trump supporter look at this as anything other than Trump being a dumbass pussy that got in over his head and got outplayed at his own stupid game?

So, three CEO's with direct expertise told him there would be high prices and empty shelves within months and he backed off.  You'd think there would be people with actual knowledge of macro economics in the White House but I guess not.

This is a tale as old as time. A bully was swinging his dick around at school and all the kids were afraid of him, just giving up their lunch money. The bully strolled up to the weird kid at the back of the class and said, "Give me your lunch money!". The kid took his headphones off and said, "huh?". The bully repeated himself. The kid looked at him and just put his headphones back on. The class' eyes were shifting back and forth between the two. The bully threatened to kick his ass after school, getting louder and louder. The kid takes his headphones off and stands up. The bully, seeing this kid towering over him, begins to realize maybe he picked on the wrong kid. Just then the kid lifts the bully up from under the arm pits and sticks him, feet dangling, against the wall. "I will kick your ass right now!", he says, and sets him back down. The bully, humiliated, walks back to his seat with all the kids snickering.

It is my understanding it is actually Congress who is able to levy tariffs. This is 100% part of the equation.

It's difficult to tell if it's the main goal, or just a profitable side benefit.

As fucked up as the idea of an American president willfully manipulating the market to enrich himself and his cronies is, it's a lot better than the alternative, which is that he is actively trying to destroy the global economy, probably because he is a full-blown Russian asset.  Who wins if there is a worldwide great depression?  If all anyone can afford is the basics, and China controls manufacturing, and Russia controls starvation (aren't Russia and Ukraine the two largest wheat exporters in the world?), and the West's wealth is evaporating because a lot of is paper and real estate, yeah, it's a new world, and quickly.

It's also difficult to tell how much of this is part of some grand conspiracy and how much is simply the fact that Donald Trump is a Stage 5 Idiot and no one else in the room will speak truth to power.  Every time this race car hits the wall, it's hard to tell if it's malicious or just because there's a god damned 5-year-old at the wheel.
