Funniest thing about this is that any NBA team would have gutted the franchise to get a generational talent in Luka. Like 5 firsts plus a couple of starters

This is my biggest problem other than stabbing the fan base in the back.

That lineup don’t even make sense. AD is a PF and has proven that.  PJ has been a legit 3rd or 2nd star. You still have 2 centers.

it don’t work.

What the ever loving fuck is going on? Did Cuban have a breakdown? This makes zero sense.

Unfortunately he don’t own the team.

Perk just said the Mavs won the trade.

It's all good, y'all.

Ugh the kiss of death.

You know they also said we didn't have to worry about them moving the team to Vegas when they bought it.

I now do not believe that either.  Congratulations Las Vegas on your new basketball franchise.  I'm sure your new arena will be awesome.

Oh they gone.

they just made sure most fans won’t care when they do now.

and also I thought I’d hate Luka when he left.

now I’m always a fan.

Adelsons trying to move the team to Vegas makes the most sense.  Bleed Dallas of assets, lose fans, ticket sales go down, "see mr. commissioner no one in DFW cares but we'd sell out every game in Vegas", move team, ...... profit.

This is end game I’m sure.

and Nico either has his eye on the door out or got assurances.

Also the Mavs roster just doesn’t work.

They couldn’t get into a set without turning the ball over on Friday night against Detroit and now you don’t have Luka coming back at all.

They have AD/PJ at PF and Gafford/Lively at center. And no real PG since Kai is more of a 2 guard now and had a bad back.

there has to be more to this coming. This can’t be the final roster and lineup.

The Lakers need to acquire a center. Robert Williams would make sense with Doncic as his PG. My best guess is they get him.

May as well get Robert Parish out of retirement.

For the Lakers absolutely.

I'm giving up on the Mavs after this bullshit.

The silver lining in all of this is that there is still a chance that Luka just leaves the Lakers in free agency after next year and they end up being real shitty for a long time.

No chance the Lakers do this deal without knowing Luka will re-sign.   First day he can, he will sign a super max with them

Holy shit wake up to this is crazy. This has to be the dumbest trade in history. If I was Cuban and I didn’t get notified at all to say no way don’t do this then I would sell the rest of my slice of the pie and gtfo. I can’t believe they wouldn’t talk to Cuban at all, there is just no way.

I would laugh my ass off if he doesn’t sign with the lakers. The can’t pay him more than anyone else.

he could go play with his bestie Jokic. Or pick a team that’s on the cusp and just helps push over the top.

I see.  Even more reason why other teams would have given more.  I still dont think the Lakers do the deal not knowing he will re-up.

AD has been incredibly good and healthy these last couple yrs.  Finally gets to play with a center.  He and KAI should be really good on offense and he and Gafford should be really good on defense.  Its not a terrible get for them.  It just seems like they should have got more other stuff.   Only one pick 4 yrs from now is wild but getting a top 10 player in return who is at the peak of his prime is a very good return

The Mavs clearly didn't want to give him a supermax and had issues with his work ethic outside of the court.   Its all good at 25-26 but not taking care of your body catches up VERY fucking fast.   He's an incredible player without doubt on a top 15 all time trajectory though.

It will be interesting to see where the Lakers go from here with regards to the rest of the season.  They have to get another big.  Will LBJ ask out?   Will they try to convince him to go somewhere else for a better shot at winning now?

Mavs GM was the executive who screwed the pooch when they were going after Curry. Dude has a history of incompetence. This lady that owns the Mavs now is a fucking nutter too. Sorry Mavs fans.

He’s also been an amazing GM who’s hit almost every move out the park.

he messed up here though. Big time.

He let Brunson walk. The Kyrie trade is only good in hindsight. The main reason those moves "worked out" is because they had a top 3 player in the world carrying the franchise.

I typed out a long write-up about how this was the worst trade in the history of organized sports, but deleted it.  I still think it probably will be, and it's obvious.  But instead of just piling on with everyone else, I tried to step back and think about this from the Mavs perspective and come up with some sort of rationale that isn't a conspiracy theory revolving around moving the franchise to Vegas. It's the only way to keep my sanity.

For this trade to make sense from the Mavs perspective, the following must be true:

1. The Mavs believe Anthony Davis was the only player out there who could get them to the title in the near term, hence why he wasn't shopped to other teams. (maybe?).

2. The Mavs believe with Anthony Davis they will get to the finals this year and can win it. (I'm skeptical).

3. Luka was a problem, not only because of the cost of the extension, but also maybe he was not going to sign, or was difficult to deal with, or some other reason. (maybe?)

4. The team was going to have to be blown up next year because of the cost of Kyrie and Luka contracts. (maybe).

5. The approach of using two superstar point guards was good enough to make the finals but not good enough to win the title (probably true).

6. This is all they could get out of the Lakers (no way; this is bullshit; if pressed the Lakers would have caved for 2-3 #1 picks).

If all six of these are not true, this is the worst trade in the history of sports.

Ok so I already posted what would have to be true in order for this trade to not be the worst in sports history. Now let’s look at this from a conspiracy theory view.

Why did Cuban sell the franchise to such a questionable buyer? One reason. They offered the most money. But did they?

Cuban sold 72% for $3.5b. Let’s say it was a 15% premium over other bids, or $500m more than any other bid. That is not chump change to a guy worth probably around $5-6B.

But the Adelsons tank the franchise, requiring a major injection of capital at a substantially lower valuation. Cuban can’t put more money in and gets diluted down in ownership even further. The Adelsons essentially “get back” some of the extra premium they paid over other bids. Cuban gets screwed.

Meanwhile, the Adelsons who love the Lakers and have a suite, have some sort of nefarious back room deal with the Lakers that may or may not have a Vega mob element, to deliver a title to the Lakers while the Mavs end up as a Vegas franchise.

Man we were all busy being worried about the NFL being rigged to get the Chiefs to a possible 3-peat all the while Adam Silver put in the call to rig the NBA to keep the Lakers relevant after LeBron with this absolutely absurd trade...

Silver did learn from the best league rigger of all time tho:

AD is 31 years old. He is not at the peak of his prime and is a fringe top 10 player at this point. Luka is a top 3 player that is yet to enter his prime. There is no spinning this as anything other than one of the worst trades in league history

Yea i just tried justifying it makes Dallas have the best rotation of bigs with Lively, AD, Gafford and PJW...and that they were definitely not wanting to commit 345,000,000 to Luka. But then I saw ADs contract. Dallas will have AD, Klay, Lively, Marshall  and hardy under contract in 2 years. Irving Gafford PJW will be FA's. AD's contract has a player option for 63 million in 27-28 when hes 35 years old.  so I stopped trying. This reminds me of the time the Lakers got Pau Gasol for Kvamme Brown

About 10 years ago I moved to Houston. Having been a lifelong Dallas sports fan, there was some difficulty. The rangers were the first to go, since the Astros were winning and I actually went to games fairly frequently. This past season, the cowboys were cut off the list, as I’m sure they were for many cowboys fan. I’ll always love Dirk and remember that run, but this is probably the clean break I need to get the Mavs out of my life. So long Dallas, go fuck yourself.
