Again to be the contrarian, I said this to someone earlier.  Does this make either team better?

Dallas now just has one ball handler/shot creator and he takes a lot of shots in his own right.  Sure, they have a big front line but who there makes shots for them besides Kyrie?

On the Lakers, who plays inside for them?  They're already not great on defense now they're going to have Reaves and Luka on the floor at the same time?

Whether each team is better or not the key issue. The key here is that the Lakers acquired an extremely valuable asset for next to nothing. Dallas could have gotten so much more franchise help than they got.

To add to crazy conspiracy theories, it sure shines a light on the Mavericks not getting a TV deal done for coverage outside of Dallas.

Listening to Nico in their press-conference, I’m wondering if he’s like Verbal from Usual Suspects. Room temp IQ, bumbling, stuttering about whatever bullshit only to throw everyone off the scent of some supervillain Keyser Soze master plan. Because there has to be more to this, right? Or is the motherfucker just that dumb?

This wasn't about making the 2024-25 Lakers team better.  This gives them a foundation for the future without having to luck into a draft pick.  From a mavs perspective it makes no sense unless you got a haul of draft picks.  I can't buy into the conspiracy theories but how little they got for him is gross incompetence otherwise.

Of course they’re going to approve it. The only reason Chris Paul’s deal got denied was that the league was running the New Orleans franchise at the time and had final say. If one team wants to debase itself for the benefit of another team, who are they to say no?

Exactly.  That's why them killing the CP trade was so wild.  It had never been done before.   Only reason it was done was because the league was supposed to be running the team.

He doesn’t present well. I recall an interview the Ticket had about the whole Haralabob bullshit. But Nico is no dummy, or wasn’t until purportedly 3 weeks ago.  Every move he’s made had been excellent. That’s what makes me think this is Adelson-influenced, heavily.

AD is currently playing and averaging 26 and 12 and is one of the best defenders in the league. I get your general point, but no need to go crazy.

He’s 32 with the body of a 40 yo. This trade was absolute shit and totally stinks of collusion. The other owners should veto it and open it up to bidding before the trade deadline

Ok. I’d forgotten about the NO franchise condition at the moment. I’m catching up to this, and was wondering about approval, remembering the CP3 nix, and wondering why nobody was talking about league approval. Thanks, and thanks @Kermit

I don't get it otherwise.  I don't really get it regardless, but even if you come to the decision to move away from Luka (however dumb that may be considered), not getting more for him is complete incompetence.  If it's the Adelson's they just tanked his GM career post Mavs.  Maybe he negotiated a nice golden parachute out of this.

Is this going to be one of those trades where both teams end up worse?  Who plays defense on the Lakers now?  Who runs offense for the Mavs?

LA needs him to get healthy and resign. As long as that happens then it's a no brainer and helps them reload post LeBron.

For the rest of the season it likely makes the Lakers worse. They are up shit creek now until Luka gets back and it typically takes guys some time to gel - esp. with a mid-season trade. They need Luka to come back in a hurry, play the rest of the season and hope that LeBron doesn't miss any time.

I have no idea what the Mavs are going to look like. They don't have a point guard.

Both teams might not be done making moves, though.

Not mad enough to comment originally. Just negged you and I rarely neg. It was a stupid comment. The one above is better. Tons of people care about the Mavs and Rangers. Tons. Do more people care about and follow the Lakers and Cowboys?  Absolutely. But your original comment was idiotic. Don’t defend it.

outside of north texas and their respective fan bases no one cares about the mavs or rangers

at least the stars get hate in minnesota

the mavs had a rivalry with the rockets during the twin towers era

the rangers and royals didn't like each other in the old AL west

that's about it

Agreed on all fronts. I am sure more will leak out about this, but it’s mystifying to say the least. If Nico was truly concerned about Luka’s conditioning, and I believe he was and I agree with him, no other team knows the extent of your concerns. Go negotiate and get the best deal you can, which is what Nico would have done. There has got to be more afoot here than concerns about fat Luka. The league simply doesn’t know what you know. Go get a fucking haul. Adelsons and other plays must exist.

You’re wrong, but your post is more reasonable. He didn’t say that.

Yep, it may be a bad decision but its the only realistic conclusion.  All the conspiracy stuff is over the top.    The only real question is why didnt they shop him?

I think you answered your own question.  Why didn’t they shop him for a haul? If the Adelsons didn’t want to pay Luka and wanted to move on, so be it.  It’s a mind-numbingly stupid decision, but it’s a choice.  The Cowboys traded their far and away best player in Herschel Walker once upon a time.  It happens.  BUT, they got an absolute haul that essentially netted 3 Super Bowls.

Why didn’t Nico put feelers out to the entire NBA and let the bidding start?  Why did he go to one team and one team only, which happens to be the singular glamor franchise of the NBA? With all due respect to the Celtics, the Lakers carry the banner for the NBA.  And why did Nico settle for 32 year old AD, a guy named Max that I know nothing about, and 1 fucking first round pick.

There has to be more to the story. Because this is simply not a fair trade. The team with the monster trade chip got absolutely hosed.  It makes no sense.  Until we learn the true reason it made sense.

When the Mavs hired Nico I thought it was the dumbest decision I’d ever seen, because his background was in a completely different business. He knew nothing about running a basketball franchise.

And then when he traded for Kyrie, it reinforced that belief because of the overlap with Luka and his current status in the league. But then that move was great, in retrospect, and everyother move he made was great too, and I assumed he must know a lot more than what his position would imply. This move throws all of it out the window. There has to be more to the story, or he was incredibly lucky with his previous moves that looked bad working out great.

Say Luka is one double meat double cheese from a heart attack and the Mavs are 100% sure of it.

You still don’t do this deal. They got 1/10 the value they should have gotten for him under any scenario where he passes the other team’s physical. This is collusion plain and simple. If the league allows it it’s just the WWE

I don’t think any GM in the history of sports would shop a talent like Luka to only one team if there wasn’t pressure from above to do it.

nico’s name is on this trade because he is the GM but I’m putting 99% of the blame on the Adelson’s.

His career as a GM post Mavs is now over.  Hopefully he negotiated a pay day for himself if he was forced into this.

That's a direct order from the owners to trade with their friends at the Lakers.   I don't see how it could be anything other than that.  Nico needs to provide detailed in-depth reasoning on why no other team was contacted to maximize the trade.  This fanbase deserves that at a minimum.

He will just say Anthony Davis is the only person they wanted, and that’s all they could get for Luka from the Lakers.

Here's some of Luka right before he went down with the injury.  You tell me if he looks out of shape and not productive.  And tell me why in a month, when he's back in the flow, he wouldn't be in the same shape making plays again?  Someone explain this

Agree to disagree. I think they're at least a little worried that Giannis asks out after another year of Doc and Dame.

Right now he only has a job in basketball if it’s with the Mavs. No other team is hiring him after this. Fans aren’t going to get anything other than the company line from him or he’s going back to Footlocker.

I just listened to Harrison talk for five minutes. He spent the better part of a month trying to trade Luka to LA. He also does not sound like someone who should be a shift manager at McDonald’s, much less a General Manager of an NBA team not based in Charlotte.

And also Luka normally plays around 230, maybe a little more.  So you're fucking telling me he has gained 40 pounds in 6 weeks.   I want to see the fucking scale.

Luka hasnt seensouth of 240 since his rookie season. Played last season at 260. Mavs said he was over 270 in preseason

I’m sure AD is pumped up to join a Dallas team with no chance. And I’m sure he’s also pumped to be the guy some idiot traded for a generational player- bet he’s looking forward to making his home debut.

Fuck man. We traded a top 3 player for a dude who has the nickname “street clothes”.

Agreed. Denver and San Antonio are the only teams that hang up if offered to swap their star for Luka. MIL and OKC at least listen and have a conversation.

SA wouldn’t trade their star but I bet they would have traded multiple first round draft choices.

I want to see the scale on all this shit.  I want to see detailed reports on his weight written and signed starting from his rookie year from you and from fucking Nico.

If this is what you all are standing on, this city deserves to see every last fucking detail.   And then write a paper for review correlating his weight directly to the reason why we didn't beat the Celtics.

Shaq spent most of his later career with the Lakers.

Shaq never signed an extension with the Orlando Magic after they drafted him.

He left as a free agent to the Lakers.

He spent most of his later career with the Miami Heat.

And then a couple small blips on Cavs and maybe one or two outer teams.

I'm numb. I feel nothing. Ive been a fan of this team for 44 years and nothing comes close to how low this moment feels.

We need to normalize switching professional-franchise loyalty. I did it when Cuban sold the team and reverted back to my childhood Spurs loyalty.

You can, too.  You don’t owe the Mavs shit. And if they’re going to decide to be shitty (and probably be shitty in Vegas), who stick with them?

MIL doesnt.   No chance.   They have a guy who has proven over and over to be committed to being in incredible shape, not missing games, and playing harder than just about anyone in the league every single game.    He's also shown his loyalty over and over.    They would burn Doc at the stake and trade Dame for a box of chips if that is what Giannis wanted before trading him away.

I’m 6’3.5” and I have to work really hard to keep my weight down to 215. It fluctuates between 215 and 225 with no real noticeable difference. Luka is thicker than me and has 3.5” on me. No way he plays at 230 or anything less than 260.
