I don't know what it takes to move a franchise in the NBA.  I know latching on to a theory straight from the script of Major League doesn't sound legit.

It takes the consent of the board of governors, ie the owners.

Especially when it would be infinitely more lucrative for the league to add a new franchise in Vegas than to move one there.

Not really. It would be more lucrative to move there, then decide whether to give the city that lost the franchise an expansion team.

Dallas is a way bigger market than CHA (especially when that move happened) and the Mavs are a WAY bigger brand than the Hornets ever were with far more history.

The Mavericks are a large local market team with no national fan base, and not for nothing, are the distantly third most important franchise in their own market.
I would argue that until Sunday the Mavericks had the most passionate and loyal fan base in the league. They inherited that spot when the Sonics moved out of Seattle and the Warriors left Oakland.

The guys on the ticket this morning said this is 100% Harrison with no input from ownership (including Cuban). Said he has been shedding euro players since he got here as well as isolating Luka in terms of coaching and ancillary staff.

supposedly he has a vision of the types of players he thinks can win championships in the NBA and he looked across the league and AD was the one he wanted with what he has already assembled

even if this is all true it is inexcusable to get only one number 1 4 years from now.  That’s just a terrible unforced error

sounds like a total moron to me but time will tell

I actually turned in my Mavs card yesterday. There’s no justifiable explanation.

Nah, the franchise fee for a Vegas team is going to be massive and basically split amongst the current owners.   I dont think it would be counted as BRI and consequently wouldnt have to be shared with the players either. I'm seeing numbers as high as 7B.   They wouldnt get that with a team moving there and I dont believe they have that same demand to put a team back in Dallas.  As you noted, the current owners would have to sign off on the move.   They arent giving up that kind of money.

Yes I heard the segment as well.  Nico must think AD is a top 5 player, and is the Batman to the other Robins on the team.  That's why he singled in with the Lakers.  Good luck scoring points in the playoffs.

There’s stupid, and there’s trading Michael Jordan to the lakers in 1989 for vlade divac and a 1994 first round pick.

Again, the trade is not smart but come on.  Divac?  Laimbeer?   AD is top 75 all time player and currently a top 10 player.  Consistently 1st team defense.  All-NBA 2nd team last yr and well on his way to at least that this yr.   Dude just had a 40/20 gm.   The first 40/20/5ast/4 blk game in the last 30 yrs.   Currently avg'ing 27/12  Yall acting like you got a piece of shit back.

Getting AD isnt the issue.   Not getting additional pieces is the issue.

No, I just dont think there is anything he could say that would placate the fanbase.   The deal is done.

Only thing that could come close is that there was a long term prognosis on Luka that he may decline quickly and LA was willing to take the risk. Otherwise, there is just zero explanation for unevenness of the return. Add to it that the trade was to a Western Conference rival in the Lakers and it just defies every observation we have about these types of trades that you try and avoid improving direct competitors without some evenness in the trade.

Isn't that pretty much what Oakland ownership did to the A's? I never got the sense they seriously tried for a new stadium other than some renderings and being unreasonable with Oakland. They tanked the franchise to the point of 4 figure attendance to justified the move.

Also, I don't believe for a second that the Adelsons weren't involved, and I will continue to believe that it was their initiative.

No one is going to come out and publicly disparage a player like that even if that is exactly what he thinks.

Talk about horrible fucking timing.    Though there is never a good time for a 60% price hike.   That shit is insane.

*rising.  I guess they really don't have editors anymore.

Tim Macmahon's article from yesterday laid out how Nico did not like Luka and the way he went about the business of basketball.  He'd spent the last year trying to get through to Luka via Kidd and when that didn't work by slowly firing the people who meant the most to Luka, trying to get his attention.

I think it makes more sense that this wasn't a directive from the Adelsons to trade Luka, but that Nico knew the Adelsons' business timeline was 4 to 5 years for legalized gambling and the secret but viable backup plan of moving the Mavericks to Vegas (see Raiders, Athletics) if plan A didn't materialize and used it to his advantage to persuade the owners to approve the trade and move on from Luka.  With that perspective, Nico's quote of "The future to me is 3-4 from now.  The future 10 years from now... They'll probably bury me and (Jason Kidd) by then, or we'll bury ourselves." makes a lot more sense.  Nico seems himself as a mad genius who can unlock this next level in the Mavericks by acquiring who he believes to be the ultimate player in the league.

This isn't even germane to the conversation, but there are many other passionate and loyal fanbases in the NBA that I would put above Dallas. I always considered Dallas a bandwagon sports town. There are too many other sports options. That arena was never considered one of the loudest or difficult to play in.

The passion is especially high in cities that don't have any other major league teams. I would start with Sacramento -- their fans have been shit on forever and they still love their team. Utah, Portland, Memphis, OKC, and San Antonio. None of those places have any other local team to root for. Now that the Mavs committed seppuku, Dallas fans can just as easily go pour their love into the Cowboys for example.

Have heard a rather convincing argument that this was all about the Adelsons not wanting to sink super max salary money into a player in Dallas when there has been no movement and no path forward for them to build a casino in Dallas next to the Mavs eventual new arena. Adelsons are in the casino business, not the sports franchise ownership business and our (no CR) political heros in Austin ain't gonna let casino gambling happen anytime soon. Adelsons thought they could buy their way into legalized gambling in Texas but made a massive miscalculation due to all the big political players that could make casino gambling happen already being bought off by factions that do not want casino gambling. If that happened to be paired with a little birdie at the league office telling them if they wanted to unload Luka they will have cover if they give the Lakers the exclusive negotiating rights because it's what is best for the league, you very easily get to the point where what has occurred happens. The Adelsons then dismantle the Mavs and kill off any goodwill left lcoally towards getting an arena deal done and turn around to the NBA governors and say: "look at this, we can't get a new arena, woe is us we need to move" and off to Vegas they go...

I think that's a tad unfair. The Mavs had* good fans - certainly in the top half of the league. I was always impressed when I went to games - and they weren't any good when I lived there. They aren't Boston or Philly but they aren't Houston or Miami, either. They were 2nd in attendance last season and are 1st right now in '25. Some of that is probably arena size though.

The Stars have GREAT fans.

I’m not talking about the fans in the arena. NBA atmosphere is a function of ticket prices. People who are/were Mavs fans first are nothing like primary Cowboys or Rangers fans. The real Mavs fans are city kids from Dallas proper and Oak Cliff who went to DISD schools and have actually been in a fist fight. In particular people who went through the late 80s and early 90’s with the Mavs are the opposite of bandwagon fans.

People who are Rangers fans first are “DFW Metro area”  people and 972 girls.

The Cowboys and Stars attract a lot of those two groups also, but that’s are where bandwagon people gravitate. The Stars also have some really rabid fans who hate the bandwagon.

I love(d) all three, but I am (or was) Mavs first, Rangers second and Cowboys third.

How are the stated objective of the ownership group (a Casino complex in DFW) or their heavily implied plan B (a new casino complex and NBA team in Las Vegas) a conspiracy theory? Those things aren’t conspiratorial.
The only question is whether this trade happened explicitly because of, or as part of indirect service to, those objectives.
it fits either way. There will be a Casino AND  a new stadium in DFW or  the Mavs are gone.

Look, there's some large sized assumptions you have to make in your implications, but I'm not going to defend the Adelson's or Dumond's.  If you think they're terrible people who are looking for leverage to bring gambling to Texas (a goal way before they had any idea of the Mavs opportunity) OR pick up their toys and go home to Vegas with the organization in tow, then you have only a few groups to blame..... First, them for deliberately lying and fraudulently trying to build relationships amongst business owners in the DFW area.  Second, Mark Cuban...... who, heavily rumored to be leveraged for his own problems, either mistakenly or haphazardly sold the team off to such vultures.  The league and other governors for taking the family in good faith because they presumably know this family and because they are "part of the in crowd", the ownership change was approved so quickly.  All of that said, moving a team is actually kind of difficult and actually requires taking short-term cash flow losses and damaging the brand and the actual value of the product, especially one with good economics like the Mavericks.  And failure would necessitate another sell which would be unbelievably embarrassing for said group (Remember the Maloofs?) But anything is possible.

Exactly..... this will be a good and painful litmus test for Dumond...... Yes, trust your basketball people.... to a point.  If you don't know what the fuck you're doing, then ensure you have counsel and always verify and check in on management.

Oh absolutely. It's impossible to win an NBA title with international players.

I had no idea Rob Lowe became the GM of the Lakers.
