If the only instruction was get it done, you tell every gm in the league that he’s available and ask for bids.

Then it becomes a drawn out circus and Lukas camp says “he’ll only play for xxxxx team”.  I think Nico did legitimately want AD.  But as was stated earlier, the Mavs owners are Lakers fans 😂

I think the Adelson’s are the biggest pieces of shit in pro sports. But the GM did such a terrible job that I would have resigned before ever putting my name on this piece of shit trade.

This..... Cowherd has no sources and never has.... He's commentator, not an insider or reporter and never has been.  I mean the deal at one point had 2 firsts and Knecht, who was a first himself and dude couldn't close that.  Laughable.  Maybe ownership is involved but there's professional pride and even if you're in a closet with an alligator, you still try to come out with as many limbs as possible.

Nor better than shams and windhorst but I think he’s locked in for basically all sports. He has a huge circle.  Look at his guests.  Not just basketball. Other sports

You realize just how terrible this trade is--and just how amazing Luka is--when I've yet to hear a single person remark how pissed off AD must be for being talked about like he's chopped liver. Collegiate champion, NBA Champion, 5x All-NBA, 9x All-Star, 5x All-NBA defensive team, playing some of the best, playing the most consistent basketball of his career the past three seasons, still a Top 10 player...and the consensus is that the Mavs got hosed (and they did).

He's 31 - 6 years older and knows he's not getting better.

Put an asterisk by Shaq's name, he said the Mavs won for the next two years.  Which isn't true but it's what he said.

It's been a little more than a year since Luka dropped 73 on Hawks on 33 shot attempts.

Also had 10 boards and 7 assists.

Let's make our list of players who have done that. I'll start:

(None)

They're just being contrarian to stand out.

The only way the Mavs "win" this trade is a NBA championship this year or next. Anything less could be (and already has been) accomplished with Luka as the franchise player.

The only other way the Mavs remotely win this trade is if Luka never can stay healthy and they avoid the supermax albatross contract for a guy who can't stay on the court. That doesn't excuse the return they got for him, but him moving into the Zion/Kawhi mode of undependability would at least make it a little more tolerable.

That's true. But more likely scenario is Luka will employ the brand new chip on his shoulder to dominate at a level he hasn't reached yet.

Or the owner said just get it done. Up until now Nico was doing fine

yeah, if kidd and nico are bitching about Luka's prep work/conditioning/availability/etc it also makes it easier for the owner to just say well are we really going to give someone you keep bitching about a supermax?

I'm going with Occam's Razor.  They just didn't want to pay him and Nico thought he had to do it on the downlow to keep anyone from scuttling it and his buddy took him to the cleaners because he knew the owners didn't want to pay him.  I don't expect Davis to be here long either.  the whole defense wins championships is a smoke screen.  Yes, they could have a long game of moving to Vegas but I think they are just cheap.

those guys also played in the "old" NBA.  we traded one younger guy who seems to be in the training room too much for an oldish guy who seems to be in the training room too much.  and we still have Jason Kidd.

Maybe Davis makes it easier for Kidd to employ some type of defense he'd rather run but who knows.

I don't think you're saying it was but I'm quoting you because you said his name-  for anyone who's thinking Kidd wanted this, he didn't.  This wasn't a Kidd decision.  Kidd loved Luka, despite his defensive liabilities.  Kidd knows the value of a superstar.  The Mavs board, and all of Mavs fandom actually, always roasted Kidd for relying too much on Luka.  Kidd would get questions at his post game pressers "why didn't you draw a plan to scheme Kyrie open, why didn't you find an easier inbound, why didn't you try to find ways to get easier looks, what was the game plan?" and Kidd would say "Luka IS the game plan".  To be sure Kidd got frustrated with defensive lapses and effort at times (as did we all) but Luka made up for it more often than not in the clutch.

I think Jason Kidd is a bad coach.  Decent people manager and does well with personnel mgt.  Good basketball knowledge.  But he's not a teacher and a prodder like Luka needed.  He lacks in that area and he can't outscheme anyone.  If Nico was truly frustrated Luka wasn't listening to anyone about his fitness and maturity he should have gotten rid of the coach.

My questions on being cheap would be why spend 3.5 billion to get involved in the first place, followed by why would a family worth tens of billions behave so miserly?  Why get in the game at all?

as a means to an end of unlocking Texas gambling, then it makes more sense.  Keep that investment as low as possible, get what you want, then sell the team or fund it competitively.

I'm not saying Kidd wanted it but the reports are he was bitching about Luka's training, defense, etc, like others.  maybe some of that on both sides is overblown.  the fault lies with the ownership.

You gotta craft a cover story when a transaction is met with this amount of vitriol. Whether it's others in the front office, his agency, his mama..... getting the Luka bashing as he leaves for a new place was as obvious and expected as the sun coming up in LA.  Again, all you have to do is ask him....

I know a lot of people with really high incomes and a few with pretty high net worth. The ones with high net worth are almost always the cheapest bastards you can imagine

Mavs FO will pull off the ultimate nigerian buyback with season tickets that were traded in if they pulled this off

What assets are they going to do that with?  The ones they didn't get from the Lakers?  Or are they going to gut their roster like the Suns did when they got KD? How did that work out in Phoenix?

Durant is only under contract for one more season, older, and not as good. He isn't the same level of asset he was two years ago.

He's gonna command more than you think.  He's still an elite player.

Yeah I knew you weren't saying that.  I mean we were all mad about conditioning, defense, and attitude or annoyed with niggling injuries at one point or another.  Only Nico and a couple posters upthread think those were causes to get rid of him.

I'm not saying what he will or won't go for I'm saying it won't take as much as it did the last go round.

Will the Suns get more for KD than the Mavs got for Luka?  It's very possible.

Ah now I see. The Luka trade was used to reset the market downward so that the KD trade is achievable.  I’m sure phx will be reasonable and agree that he doesn’t bring the same level of return as Luka.

I know you jest, but this explanation more sense than any others that I've heard regarding this trade.

Which is to say still zero, but like 0.000001.

The shitty win analysis? You're out of you're mind if you think that makes the Spurs 6 wins worse this season.

And I'm just fucking around - San Antonio isn't doing that before Fox has even played a game.
