This needs a separate thread. As we know Elon and Thiel's kids are being allowed to fuck around with the U.S. Treasury.

There isn't much reporting on the subject outside of WIRED.

WIRED has identified six young men—all apparently between the ages of 19 and 24, according to public databases, their online presences, and other records—who have little to no government experience and are now playing critical roles in Musk’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) project, tasked by executive order with “modernizing Federal technology and software to maximize governmental efficiency and productivity.” The engineers all hold nebulous job titles within DOGE, and at least one appears to be working as a volunteer.

Musk was not elected, and he wasn’t appointed. DOGE isn’t a real department, and government officials, who follow the law to stand in their way, are removed from office and escorted from buildings by sheriffs.

This is the part that is blowing my fucking mind. He isn't part of the administration and the people involved have no clearances and are actively violating federal laws.

So they are following unlawful orders, thus open to prosecution. Interesting.....

And concerning the staff at DOGE referenced by the OP. 10 bucks says it is Miller's kid and buddies and their internships from Princeton/Yale etc. Of course, 10 bucks will buy you a thimble of canadian gold. You know, maple syrup.

It’s possible they do have clearances.  That’s one part of law that is pretty clear, POTUS can give clearance to whomever he wishes and it’s been reported he ordered that to happen for several people without background checks.

I am trying to imagine what happens in 2010 if Obama allowed a Silicon Valley immigrant tech atheist to launch an attack on Lutherans.

They are open to prosecution by Trump's DOJ.

The law no longer matters. It only matters insomuch as when the orange god king says it matters. Outside of that it’s all just words on paper, much like our Constitution at the moment.

To be fair, I've been guilty of that meme in my youth. I learned my lesson after taking out some gateways and routers at the company formerly known as WorldCom in my 20's.

So like a young F250, you don't let kids run fucking rampant around critical systems.

There are going to be some interesting court cases, especially if they are just not cutting checks for work performed.

These funds were congressionally approved, no? It seems like any one of these companies could sue and cite the Impoundment Control Act.

We are at the point where the “fully faith and credit” of the US government cannot be trusted.

DJT is speedrunning a test of the Impoundment Act to SCOTUS (he’ll win because we’ve decided the executive is a king). But a lot of these funds are likely for services already rendered to the U.S. government.

Musk retweeted Mike Flynn (that bastion of honesty and patriotism) today calling Lutheran Social Services - which provides an incredible amount of support for families, newcomers, etc. - a money-laundering fraud and vowing to shut down their "illegal payments".  LSS literally helps keep children and seniors from starving with these funds.  Can't wait to see where this weekend's "revelations" end up in court.

I honestly have no idea what a "DEI Contract" is or whether that money was wasted in fact. Or if not wasted what DEI means in that context. I mean those are probably not hiring programs.

However with Musk saying things like this:

Quote

In a subsequent post, Musk doubled down and, without giving evidence, asked his 215 million X followers, "Did you know that USAID, using YOUR tax dollars, funded bioweapon research, including Covid-19, that killed millions of people?"

Source: https://www.yahoo.com/news/musk-brands-usaid-criminal-civil-234518173.html

I don't know if I fully trust his judgement here. USAID is out there giving money to China to make Covid-19? What are we talking about here. I doubt China got much USAID money anyway. And hundreds of millions of dollars of USAID money are being called "DEI" whatever that means in this context. And he has only been doing this for a few weeks, what he went in and did a full audit of USAID in that short time?

CTRL + F: “diversity,” “equity,” “inclusion.” Throw in a few additional nouns like “charity,” “scholarship,” and “donation.”

Almost every USAID contract had a DEI component. It was standard stuff, like also stating you would not boycott good from Israel. Very few were exclusive DEI, unless you consider things like Empowering Women in Agriculture (insert country).

I knew from the get go that Musk was in this for his own reasons. I'm still not quite sure what those reasons are, but I am fairly positive they align with my interests more than the previous tyrants in charge.

We've long since moved past the republic and into empire. People don't want to accept that, but it's plain truth and there is no going back.

When Rome was in the hands of all powerful emperors, a string of 5 of them ushered in a golden era known as the Pax Romana before a string of tyrants reduced the empire to rubble. I just hope America is entering an era of benevolent oligarchs and not the tyrants that have been running things for the last 16 years

It utterly astounds me that a not-insignificant number of Americans agree - and are OK with this.  But you can also see that the poster is getting a *little* closer to getting it; maybe these *are* the tyrants.

Warren Questions Bessent Over Musk Access to Treasury Payment System
In a letter to the Treasury secretary, the Democratic senator warned against meddling with a system that processes trillions of dollars of transactions.

Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts sent a letter on Monday to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent demanding answers for why the so-called Department of Government Efficiency was granted access to the federal payments system, giving Elon Musk and his team a powerful tool that could be used to track and potentially limit government spending.

The letter is a sign of mounting outrage among Democrats over the unorthodox efforts that the Trump administration and Mr. Musk are preparing to take control of how congressionally approved funds are spent. The questions come after a career civil servant named David Lebryk abruptly resigned on Friday after requests to grant Mr. Musk’s lieutenants access to Treasury’s payment system.

“It is extraordinarily dangerous to meddle with the critical systems that process trillions of dollars of transactions each year, are essential to preventing a default on federal debt, and ensure that tens of millions of Americans receive their Social Security checks, tax refunds and Medicare benefits,” wrote Ms. Warren, the top Democrat on the Senate Banking Committee.

The senator asked Mr. Bessent to explain what Treasury systems were made accessible to staff affiliated with Mr. Musk’s efficiency department, what they intended to do with the data and what safeguards were in place to protect Americans’ private information. She also raised concerns about the influence of Mr. Musk, the world’s richest man.

“I am alarmed that as one of your first acts as secretary, you appear to have handed over a highly sensitive system responsible for millions of Americans’ private data — and a key function of government — to an unelected billionaire and an unknown number of his unqualified flunkies,” wrote Ms. Warren, who also sits on the Senate Finance Committee.

The Musk allies who have been granted access to the payment system were made Treasury employees, passed government background checks and obtained the necessary security clearances, according to two people familiar with the situation, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal arrangements. While their access was approved, the Musk representatives have yet to gain operational abilities and no government payments have been blocked, the people said.

Mr. Musk on Sunday accused career Treasury officials of “breaking the law every hour of every day by approving payments that are fraudulent or do not match the funding laws passed by Congress.”

The misleading accusation, which he lobbed without evidence on his social media platform, X, is the only official explanation that the Trump administration has provided about its interest in scrutinizing the Treasury Department’s payment system. The system is typically run by civil servants at Treasury, which carries out payments submitted by agencies across the government and disbursed more than $5 trillion in the 2023 fiscal year.

The Treasury Department has declined to comment about the matter, which has dominated Mr. Bessent’s first week in the job.

Current and former Treasury officials have been frustrated by the unceremonious departure of Mr. Lebryk and the public attacks on the credibility of the department.

“Every Secretary of the Treasury I worked for valued, defended and respected the Treasury and its staff,” Mark Sobel, who served at the department for nearly four decades, wrote on social media. “Less that one week in, Scott Bessent has shown he won’t stand up for the institution and its workers.”

Other than gumming up the works procedurally, there's not much the opposition can do beyond pushing back publicly.

My critter - former chair of the House Progressive Caucus and representing a seat Harris won 85-11 - is doing the same shit, posting "statements". 100% of the responses on Bluesky to each one are identical to the above: "Stop posting and do something!"

Perhaps it's time to realize that these people are just representatives, not leaders. It would allow our low expectations to be met.
