had it the whole time.

hopefully a big mental step for giles.  shaking off fielder miscues isn't easy.  seemed to go away a little from his fastball, which was curious, since he couldn't locate his slider.

all's well that ends well.

let's take 3/4 and go 6-5 on the stretch of death.  we should already be 6-2, but whatevs.

without paying much attention, many would consider the first 8 games a "disaster" or something similar.  we're 4-4 after blowing two games late, 7/8 on the road, had to face kluber and severino.  we have 3 left and verlander, cole and morton are starting those games for us.

last year really fucked with our expectation disappointment ratios.

his whip is still like 1.12, which is pretty low for a dude who's "always getting into trouble".

The fact that the numerator in that stat before tonight consisted entirely of hits will blow the collective mind of this thread.
Felt like he walked the bases loaded in the season opener in Arlington.

Giles has given up 19 hits in 17 innings pitched. You can't be consistent with those numbers and certainly not a closer.

While not ideal, that’s not Giles biggest problem.

His biggest problem is 14 Ks in 17 IP (maybe it’s 16 Ks in 18 IP now)...And inability to be consistent on a hitter by hitter basis. Every pitcher on this staff save Keuchel and Sipp has a better K/9 than Giles. Let that sink in for a second: Harris, Smith, Rondon, Peacock, McHugh all have more Ks than IP... this in an age when Ks are at an all-time high and your closer can’t even average 1 K per inning?

Go back and watch the 9th tonight.

classic Giles as we’ve come to know him. Gets your hopes up that he’s starting to figure it out and then...

Devers:

98 up and away, fouled off

98 up and in, swung through

99 up and away, laid off

88 wipeout slider swung through

Holt:

87 wipeout slider swung through

88 slider weak foul

99 down the middle, called strike 3

Then george loses one in the lights, ump’s zone maybe tightens a little and it’s hold on to your butts as he can’t locate the slider or play his FB off of it.
