Trivial things that please the ever living shit out of you

Replacing little things around the house to make it feel more updated. We had our dining room chandelier blow out. It was over 20 years old. Replaced it with a much brighter satellite looking unit. Now we've kinda got the bug of wanting to replace the other sconces, kitchen light, and boobie lights in our house with ones that match. Also has me wanting to try replacing a lot of our two prong sockets with GFCI 3 prong sockets. Some may say this stuff's not trivial but we've lived in this house since 2004 and barely changed any of these things in the time so we just sort of lived with all of it.

My first home had a bunch of the 2 prong sockets. I tried to replace them with grounded 3 prong sockets but I was told it would not be up to code unless grounding wires were there to ground the socket. If not i would have to run ground wires throughout the house. My house did not have the third grounding wire so I left them alone until we did a major remodel.

Our house is a hodge podge. Some rooms have 3 prongs, some have 2 prong. From what I've read, older houses (ours is from 1955) typically have metal electrical boxes that house the 2 prong outlets so you can use those with the new 3 prong to ground the wire. I may take one off to check it out. I tend to not try to mess with electrical repairs so as not to kill myself but replacing the chandelier got me past that fear.

LIstening to the Cowboys game on the radio as I take my dog for a long walk. In this terrible season, I've really enjoyed not watching them on TV but instead listening on the radio while I run errands or take a relaxing walk.

Another one, finding a new way to walk my dog through our neighborhood. We live in a neighborhood that has two creeks. We'll usually walk down the long greenspace that borders one of the creeks. It's nice because I don't have to worry about her peeing or shitting in someone's yard. Yes, I bag up her poop. Today on our way back home, we walked by a part of the greenspace that has a path that goes into the forest area around the creek. It was a nice 5 minute diversion from our normal path home. The dog actually found it and led me down the path. She's part bloodhound.

I'm at work and really wanted some chips. Looked in my desk drawer for something else, and forgot that 2 weeks ago I bought a bag of Doritos I didn't have time to eat.

Luckily for you, Fin (my son) doesn't hang out with you at work.  Otherwise, you would have found a half-eaten, slightly open bag of chips in your desk.

The burgers aren’t that bad. But the fries should definitely go directly in the garbage. They’re an abomination.

I once ordered the cheese fries. These mother fuckers threw a slice of kraft singles on some fries and put it in the microwave. I asked for my money back when I saw that. That is ghetto! I could do that shit at home.

While I'm more PC savvy than some, I've never been one of those guys that knows a ton about how PC's work (BIOS, Windows registry etc...) I know their purpose, but never fuck around with them. The other day Microsoft pushed a Windows 10 update to my PC and basically bricked the motherfucker. When I grabbed it the next morning, it started off with a "uninstalling update" routine, and it never recovered ending up in this Blue Screen automatic repair loop. All of the tools provided for fixing/troubleshooting didnt work (uninstall updates, restore points didnt exist, etc...). I even prepared an external USB drive with Windows reinstall media, but when I tried to reinstall the OS, the reinstall process wouldn't let me select the proper drive partition, because it was encrypted by bitlocker, telling me to disable that in the control panel (which I cant get to, because the fucking POS wont boot).

I got on support with Microsoft chat, had my case "escalated" from a first line moron to a specialist, also a moron who told me that I would have to contact the PC manufacturer to disable bitlocker, there was nothing MS could do. I called a couple of PC repair shops but they charged around a $100 for a diagnosis fee and start from there. The laptop is a few years old so I'm hesitant to throw a lot of money at it. Went to Best Buy in frustration to look at just buying a new PC, but got pissed off at the idea of dropping another $800-$1000 on a PC when there was nothing wrong with mine a few days ago.

So last night I grabbed some beer and start watching you tube videos on my work PC about how to recover from this type of shit. Brought up the old DOS command window and ran all sorts of commands that I have no real understanding what they might do. Some of those commands tell me my C drive is corrupt/unreadable. Commands to disable bitlocker would tell me the drive was already unprotected. Other commands didn't return info that would match the videos. But I plugged away at it enduring many videos, reboots, and ultimately I was able to reformat the drive , reboot the PC  its back to normal. Never even had to reinstall the OS.

Spent a little over 2 hours but I was drinking beer so it wasn't a total waste of time, and I know I saved at least $100 for a repair trip and likely more. That last reboot cycle, when I could tell the fucking thing had rounded the corner and was gonna boot up, I'm pretty sure I let out a Gilbert  laugh.

Fuck you Microsoft for your shitty windows update and shittier support. But us nerds will always come out on top at the end.

Getting ready for a nap in my easy chair as big fat snowflakes fall from the sky, when I’m warm in my house, with no place I need to go, and football I don’t care about plays in the background.

Few things give me child like amusement as when it snows in Dallas. I took the dog out for a walk during the snow and just looked around in awe like when I was a boy. The dog jumped in the air to try to grab falling snowflakes. It's her first time seeing it.

I just typed an email title on Team Snap to my daughter's school team.  My computer suggested the titles of the last few threads/contributions on Surly.  "PSA 200? Holiday Bowl on LHN now" and "Happy Birthday Melania" were a couple I remember.

Also, that would be a trivial thing that makes me surly. No bidet at work.

Utah drivers.

Went to Bryce Canyon for the weekend. On the drive to and back, I was impressed how Utah drivers know to stay out of the left lane unless they are passing someone.

Then we got into Nevada and it turned to shit.

I’m sure the drive back to LA/OC will make me want to run some Hyundai off the road.

Having a "private" banker so I don't have to call a 800 number and talk to Praveeth (who is a great guy I'm sure). My guy has my number, calls me back at all hours, checks in regularly. And he works with the investment / tax guy to figure how I can launder money without getting caught.

I rolled my old 401K account into the bank to meet the minimum. So far it's been an awesome experience.

Not a humblebrag. More of a PSA to look into it if you're tired of your bank.

Seeing a picture of your ex-wife almost 20 years later, realizing you aged well without getting fat, and she didn't didn't manage to do either one.

Owning a pair of noise cancelling earphones.

Wife downstairs yelling at the kids, kids crying. Put on my earphones and a little Pet Shop Boys (yes I know I'm gay) and can't hear the drama.

I was getting on an elevator at work and my ear bud slipped out. It was slow motion watching it hit the floor then roll directly for the gap between the floor and elevator. Right as it was going to fall in the gap it bounced and skipped right over it stopping about an inch away.

Freaking AirPods in general, especially how they inevitably slip out in those types of situations, are “trivial things that make me surly.”

Digging out earwax with ear scoop. Must be an ASMR thing because I'll root around every few days just for the tingling sensation.

Or when a nugget drops on it's own, and you gotta stop and just embrace it.

Watching my dry her hair wearing a t-shirt and panties is a treat. She's 43, still has a great pair of legs and usually wears these itsy bitsy panties.

Your wife? Daughter? Side-piece? All 3?
